Ran the update last night and just got my mini-network back up.
I'm connected to a cable modem on a DP550 via ethernet, then to an 800 iBook via AirPort and on to a PM8500 via ethernet. Seems several settings changed, found the culprit a little while ago - iBook thought it was connected via ethernet, not airport. Now the 8500 can see the web and is back to crunching SETI. No other problems noted yet.

Two suggestions from previous updates:

1. Run repair permissions from Disk Utilities after the update.

I actually did that, then ran Cocktail - voodoo I suppose, but my Tibook works fine now. If that doesn't work...

2. Use the combo updater, not the Software update method. If that doesn't work...

3. Reinstalll Jaguar 10.2 or whatever your clean version is, then use the combo updater.

I updated to 10.2.8 last night on my 12" G4 Powerbook, and now my Linux doesn't work! The machine just powers down ...........

With all due respect, if you're dual-booting between Mac OS X and Linux I cannot imagine how you would even *begin* to need help from a forum such as this one. alt.comp.linux is where I'd expect you to go. Maybe apple.slashdot.org will have a thread on 10.2.8. (Slashdot has a thread.)

As a side question, why are you booting into Linux when you're running OS X? I can't imagine any OSS projects that don't have good representation on OS X, but then again I'm not really a Linux head. (Just curious.)

[Added apple.slashdot.org thread]

It seems that my mac doesn't want to see the network now. When I boot from a different disk its okay. None of the network settings seem to have changed. When I ping the router I get Host is down.

Any clues?

I bet you're using a Gigabit Ethernet machine, like my DP 450. What some of us have done is revert the AppleGMACEthernet.kext (in System/Library/Extensions) from the new version 1.3.0 to the 10.2.6 version 1.2.4

This got me back up and running. There are detailed instructions and a link to the 1.2.4 kext on the apple discussion boards.

I have run disk utility, system optimizer and restarted the system several times. So Memory/system/copy remains about the same approximately 50% slower than 10.2.6.

Has anyone had the same experience?

Screen turned green

After the update my LCD monitor (ADC-VGA) has gone crazy.
It's syncing in green only.

Anyone has similar problem?

I tried booting using the Apple Key and holding the S key. When the system arrived at the command line entry point the Keyboard was not active thus eliminating any command line entries.

Has any one else had this problem?

I came back to my iMac 30 mins later and it was asleep and it would not wake up. So I reset the machine and waited for it to boot. Got the grey screen with the Apple logo, then the blue screen with the progress meter, then when the password/logon screen was due the machine just displayed a blank blue screen, I could see and move the mouse pointer. There was no logon screen, or menus or icons, could not even eject a CD This happened every time I booted into OS X 10.2.8.

The only options I am faced with is by reinstalling panther but I am scared I will loose all my data by doing that. Or install OS 9.2 which insists on formatting the drive as it can't mount Mac HD 1. Help?

Are there any ways or hacking into OS X maybe even in terminal mode and removing OS 10.2.8 maybe?

You have a couple of options. You could boot into OS 9 via a disk, trash your OS X System and Library folders, and reinstall. If you are worried about losing your "User" folder, rename it for now, and we'll come back to it. Or you could log in under single user mode (reboot and hold down the command and s keys - you'll end up at the command line). You'll probably be asked for a user name and password. Use your regular ones. Type "/sbin/fsck -y" to repair any disk problems (hopefully). Then type "/sbin/mount -wu /" to mount the hard drive. Now try to continue booting by typing "/sbin/SystemStarter". Hopefully you'll be in. If not, e-mail me, and I'll point you to some more info.

As an aside, I feel I must point out that those who warned of the complications of moving to a Unix-based OS were right. Permission problems, wrong icon associations, fixes made at the command line... Yup, they were right.

OK. This has way to many weird things happening to update. I am officially waiting for panther.

I think I will join you in waiting till Panther comes out. It isn't going to be that long a wait is it??

No, and it'll be worth it. There are some funky bugs, though. I've had the mouse revert to the old 'click-n-hold' style (ala pre-OS 8); in other words, you have to hold the mouse button down to use menus. Also text input boxes, such as the ones used here on MacRumors for message input, tend to 'white-out' instead of properly scrolling, when you type past the bottom of the box. Also, if you install Panther on another partion, like me, then re-boot into Jaguar, some items lose their association and try to open with the Panther version of the appropriate app, which usually doesn't work. This actually makes some sense, though; the OS is just trying to use the lastest version of the appropriate app. The solution is to either open the appropriate app first, or use the "Open with..." option.

I'm sure there are some other funky bugs lurking, but overall it's NICE. And personally, I like the new look.

A point of possible interest: Safari under Panther is at version 1.1 (v100).

edit:

fixed, thanks to andrew. if you have this problem, go to this link. follow the instructions. i booted into classic to swap the file. once i booted back up into osx i clicked "fix and use" on the dialog box.

Shoddy work

Updating to 10.2.8 killed my ethernet connection last night. I've found I'm hardly the only one. A lot of people around the gigabit era have lost their ethernet, but it isn't just them. Here is a post showing how many people have lost their connection:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@225.JjhlaLFgg45.9@.5999d9d9

Quite a few others are seeming to have problems in booting up properly, too.

I did fix several problems by zapping the PRAM until I heard the start up chime three times. I can now boot into OS 9 again (before it just showed a black screen), and my internet is working again. (Oh, happy days!)

Well, everything seems OK except for the fact that my battery life has decreased significantly. Apple, please tell us you tested this on a laptop before releasing!!

BTW, I updated directly from 10.2.6 via software update.

Where is Panther?????!@#

Were you using transparentDock 2.0.2?
If so there is a problem with with using it under 10.2.8, it will reset the dock and won't allow the Dock to show up, you have to manually go into System>library>Coreservices>Dock, and hopefully you made a backup of your old dock just replace the old file with the new one. It took a few seconds but it worked for me. I don't know the problem, but just don't use TransparentDock if you upgraded to 10.2.8 it's bad news for your Dock.

Why the flame about posting here? Like it or not there are a fair number of multi-OS users here, who have not updated yet to 10.2.8. I for one am interested in this post because setting up a separate Linux OS was enough of a chore that I don't want to wipe it out and start over due to a minor OS X update.

Why linux when you can have OS X? Generally my linux OS is more responsive and faster than OSX, I like to support Open OS's and software, I like having a choice of GUI's. There are still a lot more tools and open software available in Linux that aren't available in OS X, especially in the geoscience and engineering fields.;)

10.2.8 Killed Bluetooth in 12" PBook

Hey there

This update disabled the built-in Bluetooth in my 12" Pbook. I rebooted a couple of times but no dice. I repaired permissions, still nothing. Then, I reset the Power Manager: Bluetooth back. Freakin' weird. The weird thing is that even at 100% charge, I get only 2 hours according to the calculated time, but I suspect it is higher. Aside from the annoying battery misreport, everything is back to normal.

The 10.2.8 update is dandy. Some improvements in UI responsiveness on slower machines is duly noted... though not as speedy as some of the Panther builds.

But one question.

When will we be able to download dual processor G5's over the internet? Do I need more bandwidth? :D

So I'm trying to fight the battery problem. I've repaired permissions, reset all of my power management settings to the highest conservation and reset my power manager on the mobo. It seems like part of the problem is that it will not keep the settings that I give it in the software. Besides that I'm down to 1:24 batter at 100%. What's going on here??? I need to use this thing on battery in classes, comon apple!

I'm having the same problem with bogus battery life readout, it seems off by exactly a factor of two. My real battery life is unaffected.

There's a lot of flack about this (and the G4 networking issue) over on the MacNN forum. One poster said that the battery recalibration procedure did not help. I'm still waiting for mine to recharge so I can confirm.

Let's see what 10.2.8 did to my Dual 1Gig machine:

1. Killed my dock.
2. My LiteOn CD burner won't burn.
3. The arrow (mouse pointer disappeared)...?

So I...

1. Was using Transparent dock and didn't make a backup of my original dock (d'oh!). Copied the "Dock.app" over from my iBook and now all is well. Applied ClearDock from Unsanity and now I'm back to a nice clear dock.

2. The driver for the burner was unsupported in the first place, but it worked. Replaced the modified "device-plugin" file and rebooted. Back to normal.

3. I could make the dock magnify, choose menus and icons, etc. but I had to just guess where to click. Rebooted and now it's back to normal as well.
