Just crashed, with Kernel panic

while I was reading this forum with Safari !! Screen went dark with a message to reboot the system by pressing the button on the front of the machine...

Edited: the culprit seems to be retrospect 5.1 which was running in the background, here the crash log

I installed 10.3.3 and everything worked fine until I tried to use my scanner, an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo and Photoshop Elements 2.0. Got the message, "scanner not installed".

Had to reinstall scanner, then Photoshop Elements kept shutting down. Reinstalled updates to Photoshop Elements.

Restarted the computer (Mac G4 Dual 1 Ghz). No help. Shut down and restarted, took a long time to come back up, then keyboard wouldn't work. Did another shutdown and restarted.

Seems to be working now, in a microsoft windows sort of way.

Sure is nice to see apple and microsoft apparently collaborating on operating systems.

lmao! 10 points!

Okay, waiting 3 months for 10.3.3 to fix some of my samba problems... still not perfect...

Waiting 5 months and counting for Apple to fix the glitchy 2.1 iPod software...

Are they always this nice to switchers? :)

I have the same thing - as in NOTHING in my software update

What's going on? It's not appearing in my software update, and I can't find it on the Apple downloads page! I want my update!

Anyone else having trouble? (I'm in the UK by the way...)

i think i have discovered a very minor error/fault not really a bug, well here is it.

when i go to browse device on my sony erricson z600 there is a trash can at the bottom (to deleate files on it) and if you hold the mouse over it, it says create new folder, just like the folder icon does next to it!

Everything fine, actually very snappy, upon restart.

Re: G4 dual 1GHz with
new 8x DVD Pioneer SuperDrive installed
Happy :D to have Apple SuperDrive DRIVER for Pioneer DVR-A07
(new 10.3.3 supplied Driver appeared only after REMOVAL of temp driver
previously placed / now manually removed by uninstall using PatchBurnII;
work around supplied thanks to xlr8yourMac.com) ;)

(10.3.3. Driver for 8x SuperDriver now
further supports MacRumor that soon-to-be-released PowerMacs on 23rd
will have 8x Pioneer SuperDrives installed...well, it kinda does, don't you think?)

NOTE: Pioneer firmware still "1.03"
unchanged for Macs
, although PCs apparently have required :( upgrading to 1.10, available @ Pioneer support site as download (.exe only) :p
(thanks to daveL, who alerted us to PC/Mac distinction)
Pioneer firmware changes appear to indicate PC-specific problems :( needing to be resolved for DVR-A07 DVD/CD±R/RW

:D Happy to see Apple's DVD Player now reads DVD±R/RW by adding "+R" to mix
but...can we natively burn both ways, DVD±R/RW, fully?

Update's been good for the most part. Boot speed much better, not that my Mac boots from cold all that often.

SMB networking has taken a baby-step forwards. My PCs show up in the Network finder window, but are greyed out. Double-clicking causes a 30-second beachball, followed by a message to the effect that the original item could not be located.

Connecting via Go -> Connect to Server and entering smb://dangermouse/public causes the same error. However, using smb://192.168.0.50/public works fine.

This is clearly a name-resolution problem. I've put an entry in /etc/hosts for the machine, but this hasn't helped -- probably because this is a netbios name lookup.

I'm used to configuring Samba on linux systems, so once I get home from work I'm going to investigate the /etc/smb.conf file and see what I can mess with. I'd imagine that editing the 'name resolve order' setting might help. I'll also crank up the debug output level for smbd and nmbd and trawl the logs. The nmbd log already states that my Mac's acting as the master browser for the workgroup, so at least something's going right...

Will post back if I come across anything useful!

Mail now works for me as expected, no crashes with big mbox (1.5gb) yet (crashed all the time before 10.3.3), and I now can successfully open big attachments (>10mb) sent to me with lotus notes.

PLEASE HELP

Hello all,

Please help me.

I installed the 10.3.3 update last night. After it downloaded, it looked like it was installing, then I got a error message saying that it was unable to install the update, and that I should choose "just download" or something similar from the menu, and then try manually installing the update after that. I looked in the tasks and saw that I had classic running, so I thought it would be a good idea to clear that and everything else out before I tried installing it again. So I restart my computer. When the screen comes up with the apple on top and everything loading, it hangs at "login screen starting". It won't go any further. I've restarted more times than I can remember. I got the Panther UPGRADE disk out, repaired permissions, restarted. Same thing. So I tried to do an archive and install. When I try to select the HD, it says that it cannot install on this drive because there isn't a previous version of Mac OS X on it.

Sorry for the long post, but I really need some help with this.

Thanks in advance

Peace

waiting...waiting... Good, fixed. "Thank you, Apple."

YES!

If after following what nagromme has suggested your Mac still does not work, then you may have to re-install Jaguar first, then UPGRADE to Panther, then UPDATE to 10.3.3.
You do have all your data backed up, right?

There may be a "short-cut" to all this if you have a FireWire cable and 2 Macs running OS X.

"A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) panel is available in Energy Saver preferences, as well as a UPS menu bar item, when a UPS power management system is connected to the computer. Overall support for UPS systems is improved."

I saw this listed in the update. Is there a list of Apple supported UPS systems? Also, do you still need to install the UPS drivers with this support or does MacOS X automatically supply drivers? If anyone knows, please post.

You don't have to install them, but if you want to be able to control the about of time is stays running or anything with it you have to down load the drivers. I'm running 10.3.3 and the drives work great. They install under system preferences.

So far the only problem I found was that Firewalk was not running after the update. Kinda important to have the firewall running, but I didn't even receive any errors. I only found the problem when trying to open Firewalk Preferences and then got a message that the FWCDaemon wasn't running. A reinstall of the app took care of the problem, but that wasn't good.

Who was having problems installing with SoftwareUpdate?

To the poster who found that SU failed mid-install, Apple recommends downloading the stand-alone installer and installing over the partial-update.

HTH,
AppleMatt

Installed on a G4 iMac 20" with no problems. Also installed on a powerBook 667 G4 with no problems and no fan noise as some reported.

First thing I went for was the networking and I must say that 1. I love having my networked drives showing up on the desktop again and 2. noticeable speed improvements.

Loving 10.3.3 :D

1.2.1??

Upgrade to 1.3.1 like me.
Never had any glitch in the last 6 months.

Samba is a work in progress so I doubt it will be ever perfect.

In Jagwire I had the option to download updates to the desktop, which I liked to do so I could keep a collection of updates for when I had to do an fresh system install. While I can still install updates to my machine, I can't to the desktop -- where do they go to now, and can I ( once I've found them! ) safeley move them to my 'Upgrades " folder??

cheers,

Using the 'download checked items' or 'install and keep package' function in Software Update places them in /Library/Packages and opens a Finder window to that folder for you, so you can see them. Why make things hard and reinvent the wheel? Just keep the packages there and periodically burn a CD of /Library/Packages

Probably because you're trying to logon to a server in a different netbios domain. Use the connect-to-server dialogue with the following format:

smb://YourNETBIOSdomain;username@server/share

or

smb://YourNETBIOSdomain;username@server.YourDNSdomain/share

...obviously using appropriate values for the placeholder words I used above.

In large corporate setups the NETBIOS domain that you are logging on to may be entirely different from the NETBIOS domain of the server that you are mounting the volume from, and this is entirely legitimate. Let's say your logon domain is CORPORATE, and you want to mount a volume from a server in the BRANCH domain at your local office:

smb://CORPORATE;joeuser@ourserver.branch.bigcompany.com/MyFiles

Try this and see if you can log in without using the IP address.

as far as I know, apple wanted to update open gl drivers... but in build f44 I couldn't find such updates... do you know where they are?

Safari 1.2.1

I see the Safari update comes with this install. I don't like it because I loose my autofill for my bank accounts. Autofill is a Great Feature! I wish is was still available in the lastest Safari version. Anyways I went back and installed version 1.1 from my Pather CDs.
Is there a way to have autofills in Safari 1.2.1??

How to reinstall Safari 1.1?

AutoFill still works for me in 1.2.1. Nothing changed as far as I can see. Did you check to see if maybe, somehow, it had been turned off durring the update.
