Most pathetic form of trolling yet devised

Misc. responses:

There are sure to be some things in this update relevant to future hardware. That does not mean the hardware will come soon... although I'd really like to see a new iBook in the morning :)

Negative reports always appear more on forums that the reality of people's experiences. People with problems NEED to post to get answers! Most other people won't post to say "all is well." A fraction will--but the reality is that a forum always shows a distorted proportion of problems. (I'm still going to wait and learn more about any problems that do emerge, just in case!)

Negative votes? A few is to be expected... but half negative? I think we have a single troll clicking the negative link a lot. Now THAT's a new definition of pathetic :D

Would someone with samba working be willing to post their smb.conf file or send it to me? I'm curious to see how different it is from mine since samba isnt working for me.

Has anybody done the combined upgrade from 10.3.1 to 10.3.3? If so, how did it go? Thanks.

Is there even a combined update out yet? That's usually what I use but I didn't see it posted.

My biggest complaint is that they still haven't solved the scroll wheel problem in Safari. With my Intellimouse optical explorer, in other applications like Mozilla, a quick turn of the scroll wheel moves the screen down 1 page. In Safari, no matter how fast I scroll the wheel, it just moves a 1/3 page at most. It is so annoying that I rarely use Safari because of it. Maybe it's a cocoa app thing.

Just in case someone was wondering:

Once you start a major software update, it is completely NORMAL for any application to fail to launch -- Disk Utility or otherwise. Mac OS X has done this since Jaguar, and it's nothing to be worried about. You can continue to use any open applications during the update, but if you want to launch any more applications, you'll need to do a restart.

Moral of the story: the restart really is required.

Duff-Man says...it is not unusual for the "combo" updater to not show up for a day or two. I usually grab a copy in case I ever want to re-install....oh yeah!

I see the Combined Updater in my Software Update (it's 69.9 MB). I'm just worried because 10.3.2 didn't work for me, and I don't want to reinstall Panther again. Since 10.3.1 has been perfect, I may wait awhile to update.

As far as I'm concerned this is not a problem. This is always how it has worked for me in Safari and on Windows machines and I see nothing wrong with it. I think... on Windows machines (in IE) you can specify how far one scroll on the mouse moves the page.. whether it be 3 lines, 4 lines, or whatever..

Up until this update, waving my mouse over a shortcut in Safari and clicking would take up to a second to see a response. This has been elminated.
I notice that, too.

And the tab bar now has a separator line between it and the bookmarks (or status) bar above it.

What's your network setup? I have an IP number for my computer but most others in the house get a LAN number off the Airport base station. I couldn't see everyone until I defined a LAN ethernet for my computer and let it pick up a LAN number too. Now everything works great and everyone shows up on a browse as well as all the Rendezvous shared printers.

Can you (or anyone else) explain how this works? What do I need to setup in sys prefs to "define a LAN ethernet". I'm working wireless but the rest of the network is hardwired. Usually I have to search for the ip's...can you elaborate on your solution a bit? Thx

transparent terminal

They still haven't fixed the transparent terminal bug which was present in 10.3 and also in 10.1 (and was fixed soon after that) but absent in Jaguar. Apple sure is a **** company.

Are you talking about viewing other Windows PCs on the network or other Mac's?

I have downloaded and installed the update on both my 1GHz eMac and my Power Tower Pro 200 (w/XPostFacto). Everything is fine, so far. Gaining access to and mounting network drives seems quicker.

iBook Horror revisited!

Well, when running on a 78% charged battery at school. I could not restart my iBook after the update. It's like a car that almost turns over, but then quits.

So fastforward a few hours and here I sit plugged into the power adapter and it starts right up. If that isn't just plain friggin' messed up I don't know what is. It shouldn't require wall power to start an iBook after an OS update. It's a portable for Pete's Sake! But it's running now and it's got that Apple Branded "Snappy" after the OS update feel :D

So, after that scare I am not a happy Mac Addict once again :>D

My Samba isn't working either Adam, so sorry I can't help you ... but out of curiosity, was yours working in 10.3.2?

Care to elaborate on the bug? I haven't heard anything about that...

Well aparently I had an IP adress wrong. Samba is working still. Before I reloaded my computer though, I had browsing working and i could see all my windows machines on the network. That was with 10.3.2 I beleive. I wish I could get the browsing working again so I dont need to know the ip adresses of all the computers at home!

Unreal

The following was tested before the 10.3.3 update...

When Unreal Tournament 2004 first started, my monitor tried to auto adjust, and then displayed a screen that was shifted halfway to the left. The default resolution of 800x600 appears to be conflicting with the hardware/software combo. I did test 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1620x1200 with much success.

Thanks for the input. Most games work fine. I can play MoHAA, Halo, the new Nanosaur 2 (very cool game), but Soldier of Fortune, Ghost Recon, and others are a no-go. I've tried different resolutions in the game, but to no avail. I still am getting out of range errors from my monitor. It has a maximum horizontal resolution of 75 (hz or Mhz, can't remember exactly) and I get 83 - 95 in the games that won't work and the screen goes black. The game still runs, I can hear the sound, it just won't set the right refresh rate.

Tahnks again!

new safari

I am doing a backup before upgrading...

Can someone check out the new version of Safari to see if it works with hushmail http://www.hushmail.com/?

If you don't already have an account and don't want to create one, you can try going here :

http://www.hushtools.com/

select 'key management' from the top of the page
select 'retrieve a public key' from the left hand side of the page
enter 'davidmaxwaterman AT mac DOT husmail DOT com' in the email address field
click 'retrieve public key'

See if the Java/Javascript works properly. They claim that it works with Safari, but I haven't managed to get it working at all - I have all the correct versions, as far as I can tell.

Max.

Make sure to configure SMB in Applications/Utilities/Directory Access so that the Workgroup is the same. That fixed it for me.

I did that already, thanks though. :)

Edit:
Ok, I lied, I had the workgroup in all caps. I feel really stupid now.
