DAVE networking problems...

I used to use DAVE 4.1.1, but when i saw the 10.3.3 update i lept for joy... sadly tho things arent't great. i installed the update and uninstalled dave...

its snappier and the server connections are super quick, good job so far, but any application file, or at least most of them (somehting to do with teh .app extension maybe?) appear as 'UNIX executables' with a little grey UNIX screen icon! This is programs like shockwave installers and flash updates that we have on our server. I cannot run these, as it asks me to choose an application for them to run with... is this a problem with DAVE just not uninstalling correclty or what??? or is the networkign still not fixed in OSX??? everything with an extension (.dmg or .img etc etc) seems to be ok...

any ideas?
cheers

Discus Phantomus (USB drive)

any suggestions anyone?
benny.c, yes, I've had this happen to me and it seems like it is USB specific. Are you on any network that includes even one PC, Ethernet ...even wireless? Do you have an AirPort card installed?

Although rare in Mac computers (unless they have Virtual PC installed, especially the new MS version), it is especially commom on a PC running Windows 95. Thank heaven for a MacBuddy, Aaron, that I iChatAV with in UK (near London), he had the same problem on his CUBE. (He is on a wireless cable network with his employer - SKY NEWS)

Originally thought to have been caused by a deadly computer virus developed by some mad Belgian (Flemish) software design student caught by INTERPOL hiding in the Italian Alps, it is called "assassino degli azionamenti duri" (non-fatal on Macs) the condition actually has a technical name in Latin: Discus Fantasmus; or in
Italian: Malattia fantasma del disco, as recently reported in a European technical publications through Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (AGI).

I assume the drive you have is fast USB 2.0 and that it does not have a FireWire port. Correct?

Making physical changes to the USB connection/system is what does it for me. Change ports, front, back, 1, 2, turn the cable around, switch ports with your USB mouse or keyboard, etc. If you have a USB 2.0 hub, check the power connection, and check its source cable downline.

Be sure to let us know what you have done that results in a resolution or cure for Malattia fantasma del disco

Besides looking for the USB Drive in System Profiler,
1. open System Preferences > Startup Disk (just to see if it is there or not).
2. open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions on "Macintosh HD" or whatever you have named your OS X primary drive
3. open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the external USB Drive, if you can see it listed.

While physically checking all your USB connections,

AutoFill still works for me in 1.2.1. Nothing changed as far as I can see. Did you check to see if maybe, somehow, it had been turned off durring the update.

1.2.1 worked with your bank accounts????
1.2.1 autofill works with other web sights but NOT BANK accounts....??

Install 1.1 Safari

How do you reinstall Safari 1.1? I wanted to do this ever since i updated to Safari 1.2 but haven't found out how.
Thanks

I used the program Pacifist to open the file up from my Pather CD. Then reinstalled it in my App. folder - overwriting 1.2.1 Safari App.

Try a different USB jack? When I went to 10.3.2, my card reader appeared connected (system prof.) but wouldn't pick up cards. Swapped it with printer and it worked. Dunno why, but it did.

Not sure what to tell you about that...

I can tell you that I'm running 10.3.3 and Dave 5, and I'm LOVING it. It makes my life as a Mac user at a Windows-based institution much easier. I can access my Windows shares with no problems now, and being able to mount my network shares is a big help!

Anyone notice their disk changing in Disk Utility. In my 1.25 aluBook, Ii'm not 100% sure but i think the hd was made by Mat****a (or however you spell it) but now it shows as fujitsu. I cant remember it showing up as a fujitsu anyway.

P900 now fully in tune with address book

I can now send and receive SMS through SE P900 directly in Address Book! Yeh! The update also updated the synching with new cell phones, it appears. It was perfert with the T610 and now perfect with the P900.

Auto-Fill rocks

I see the Safari update comes with this install.
I don't like it because I loose my autofill for my bank accounts.
Autofill is a Great Feature! I wish is was still available in the lastest Safari version.
Anyways I went back and installed version 1.1 from my Pather CDs.
Is there a way to have autofills in Safari 1.2.1??
Don't think Auto-Fill went anywhere. In the MENU bar
pull down VIEW and check Auto-Fill so it appears in the Menu Bar
pull down EDIT and select AutoFill Form.
pull down SAFARI > Preferences, and select what you want AutoFill to fill in for you.

Sometimes a page I want to Auto-Fill won't accept Safari for a form fill-in, so I open another browser, drag&drop the URL address oer, and placate everyone. I agree with you, auto-Fill is very important.

Did autoFill, password and username, work with my bank account, yes. Did autoFill, as in reply forms, work on my bank account, YES. Does autoFill work in general? Yes.

Make sure that you selected the form that you wanted to have the content entered into.

10.3.3 is a godsend.

Though it's not talked about in-depth anywhere that I can find, the updated OpenGL drivers are a HUGE improvement. I'd been suffering from a number of bugs in the driver for the nVidia Go 5200 in my 12" PB that made working in some of my modeling apps extremely painful... not just full applications, I was getting flaky behavior just from testing a window with a blank OpenGL view in Interface Builder.

As far as I can tell from limited testing this morning, those bugs are all gone, and draw rate with complex models seems much improved.

Installed on 1.25 15 powerbook. Works great. A DVD I had problems with now plays. Boot time much quicker (after second reboot). Eyetv does not get choppy when other programs are running (maybe I'm just imagining this one).

yeah I dunno whats goign on... I uninstalled DAVE and photshop stopped workign properly, but the Finder was VERY fast... I think my osx had a problem with reading all teh details about files (resource.frk stuff maybe, icons, file info, program its related to etc), so I reinstalled DAVE 4.1.1 and the start up is a lot slower but photoshop works and all teh icons are back....

god i don't know, I do think however that the DAVE maybe still resides in teh file system and possibly funks it up a bit... I had hoped that 10.3.3 would remove the need for DAVE, but alas it seems i still need it!

ah well....

As far as I'm concerned this is not a problem. This is always how it has worked for me in Safari and on Windows machines and I see nothing wrong with it. I think... on Windows machines (in IE) you can specify how far one scroll on the mouse moves the page.. whether it be 3 lines, 4 lines, or whatever..

It's a problem because cocoa apps essentially ignore my preferred mouse settings whereas all other apps do it correctly. I understand you can specify scrolling, but that specification is totally ignored. Mail has the problem too but it's less noticeable because most emails are short. So I'll keep using Mozilla because it works better, is much faster, has a pull down URL field with recent entries, has more sensible bookmarking, and doesn't choke on my banking site and require me to go to a debugging menu and pretend I'm running IE for windows.

Safari has worked fine with my Bank of America online banking since beta, and it works fine with my other bank's online banking (U.S. Bank).

Is this common on the 12" PB? On both my Pismo 500 and Aluminum PB 1.25 the fan almost never comes on.

after 10.3.2. it became common, yes. When I first got it back in may 2003 or so, it was absolutely astonishingly quiet. Now it is blowing, and blowing and blowing...

Later,

I installed the 10.33 update but DVD Player still does not recognize and plays DVD+R media. The info on apple's site says that this update should fix this problem. Anyone have any luck getting DVD+R discs to play?

Samba to Windows 2003 w/ Packet Signing?

I've only seen one somewhat-related post on this topic... so, has anyone had success with connecting to networked drives hosted on a Windows 2003 Server that has packet signing / encryption enabled? This is the default setup for a W2K shared drive, so unless one has a benevolent network admin that disables the encryption, it is an important issue for Mac-using clients like myself.

Samba 3.0, which Panther uses, supports these types of connections.

However, connecting to W2K shares with packet signing has not worked in 10.3.0, 10.3.1, and 10.3.2... anyone know if 10.3.3 solves this particular issue?

Here's hoping! :)

and networking...

Well, I can say that in my case making SMB connections from the Go menu using Connect to Server is snappier. It was always reliable that way, and it still it. It is simply faster in making the connections. The speed once connected hasn't changed as far as I can see (for copying data) although the contents of folders etc. appear more quickly in large folders.

Network browsing with SMB is a bit worse than before for me. I have a Windows server that I could browse to before that now returns "The alias "blah" cannot be opened because the original item cannot be found." which is annoying. Still, I always connect to SMB servers through the Go menu so it isn't a major inconvenience--besides simply existing as a feature that doesn't work.

I can now make desktop shortcuts to my Appletalk shares again though, which is nice.

I still can't integrate into the AD here. This is probably due to the way that the AD is set up though... I can't blame Apple there. I just got my hopes up slightly when I read that there may have been some adjustments to the reverse DNS lookup requirements etc.

Not a bad update really. If they can keep the SMB improvements coming then I will be happier and happier.

Safari problem

I have been having problems when quiting safari. When I quit safari the application always seems to restar itself. I thought that the new update to 10.3.3 would fix this problem but is seems to still be happening. Anybody else have this problem or does anybody know how to fix the problem?
Thanks

Someone commented on the update coming without a hardware update...

Maybe they're trying to get 10.3 perfected, so that they can in clear conscience go ahead and make 10.4 64 bit (thus leaving behind everyone not on a G5)... a bit like what they did when they first released Mac OS X

??

Probably because you're trying to logon to a server in a different netbios domain. Use the connect-to-server dialogue with the following format:

smb://YourNETBIOSdomain;username@server/share

or

smb://YourNETBIOSdomain;username@server.YourDNSdomain/share

...obviously using appropriate values for the placeholder words I used above.

In large corporate setups the NETBIOS domain that you are logging on to may be entirely different from the NETBIOS domain of the server that you are mounting the volume from, and this is entirely legitimate. Let's say your logon domain is CORPORATE, and you want to mount a volume from a server in the BRANCH domain at your local office:

smb://CORPORATE;joeuser@ourserver.branch.bigcompany.com/MyFiles

Try this and see if you can log in without using the IP address.

You're correct, but unfortunately it doesn't apply in my situation. It's just my home LAN, all in the same workgroup. I've checked the Workgroup setting in Directory Access, and verified it by looking in the /etc/httpd.conf file.

Oh well :)

i think i have discovered a very minor error/fault not really a bug, well here is it.

when i go to browse device on my sony erricson z600 there is a trash can at the bottom (to delete files on it) and if you hold the mouse over it, it says create new folder, just like the folder icon does next to it!

Hey your right :) , don't forget to report your find to http://bugreporter.apple.com

You can fix it yourself if you have the developer tools installed.

You will need to alter the FileTransferClientWindow.nib in the Bluetooth File Exchange application package if you want to do this.
