Thanks to everyone who helped out with my question! -Most thoughtful.

I too am having this DVD player problem, so dude... you are not crazy.

I updated my TiPowerbook 550 G4 and all is fine in regards to playing DVD's.

But upon updating my PowerMac MDD G4 867DP
also with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro I get that garbage all over my DVD movie.

Seeing that you also have the 9800 card I think it may have something to do with the updated ATI drivers (just a hunch), being that noone else here has claimed to have a 9800 pro and not have the DVD movie problem.

Does anybody here have an ATI Radeon 9800 card with the new 10.3.3 update and have had no problems playing DVD's after the update?

If the DVD player application itself was hosed I would think more people would have seen the problem, but being that the 9800 is an expensive card most people on this forum would not experience the problem due to using a card that is not the Radeon. This only further leads me to believe that it is a problem with the ATI updated drivers. I only tried Halo and the difference was noticable in terms of framerate, but I use my Mac as my home theatre as well and if I can't play DVD's what's the friggin point.

So I wouldn't blame Apple as much as (keywords) I would blame ATI.

I got so used to being able to say the updates didn't break anything and were all together positive... the rest of the OS is definitely snappier and happier (except Mail... the junk filter is broken) but at the expense of my home theatre. I will try VLC as a DVD player tonight and give you guys and update, but if it IS (keywords) the drivers VLC should make little impact.

FIX IT DAMMIT!!!

PowerBook fan blows!!!

So much for the X.3.3.

Due to the fan running constantly on my PowerBook rev. A 12" 867 MHz, I decided to do a clean install and return to 10.3.1

If your PowerBook fan blows... more than it did prior to 10.3.3, here's your fix - Reset the PMU (Power Management Unit).

Reset PMU - PowerBook G4 (12-inch), PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI), PowerBook G4 (15-inch FW 800), PowerBook G4 (17-inch) and PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.33GHz):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the power button to restart the computer.

I had to do this after installing 10.3.3 and once before. Works like a charm. YMMV, of course.

OK....now I'm having all sorts of trouble...

i've attached an image...it's my Terminal window. No matter what I do, it doesn't get ANY bigger than what you see here...that's it.

it was fine yesterday before 10.3.3 and now it's useless...totally 100% useless.

second problem: Address Book won't open at all...If i click on address book, my processor starts churning away, and it "says" it's open in the dock, but it doesn't appear in a CMD-TAB list of programs open. And it won't bring up a window or show up in the menu bar. And my processor usage when it's "on" has gone from virtually none to literally 90% of one G5 processor and between 20 and 50% of the other one!

So i have to force-quit it from the dock (which is the only place it really shows up outside of the activity viewer).

third problem: iChat's Rendezvous chatting is totally broken on both of our G5s...also worked fine yesterday...

but, like i said earlier, my Mail app works again...at least i have that much...

I don't have any problems - 15" TiBook; try repairing permissions and then restarting...

Strange.
When you click on it, does the Button turn RED?, can you Click on the RED Button and make it close?

It bothers me that this is happening when your "Terminal"(the security gate to your OS X soul) is open because it looks like an involuntary SpyWare type window, some of which are almost pixel thin white strips in upper left hand corner of desktop, often .exe files (Windows applications - viruses)

When you Select it by clicking on it once, does it show up in Finder?
If so, is the name "Terminal" or something else?

Can you "Close Window" by COMMAND + W
or "Quit Application" by COMMAND + Q

Have you done a total BACK UP of all your DATA yet, in anticipation of doing a totally clean install?

This is tangent to the discussion but isn't exposé nice for this reason! If a window pops up (which doesn't happen with Safari's blocking, but hypothetically speaking) you can use expose to find it because there will be space around the window and it glows slightly! Wonderful for getting rid of that crap.

Seriously. It's more than just a flashy cool feature. It really is helpful. And it isn't too tangent to the discussion ("Mac OS X 10.3.3 Released"); it's just ignoring that final ".3". :)

MacRAND,

Yes, the single button you see is the "close" button...

I'm working on a backup, but i've got a (rather full) 300GB RAID array here, and it's my production work-horse...i can't afford too much down time. I can get around the terminal thing for most stuff, but it just bothers me....this was, i repeat, TOTALLY FINE before i downloaded X.P.3, and i didn't install anything else before i opened terminal again. suddenly, it was like this...

i can totally access every part of the term app except the main window. It won't drag out to a bigger size or anything. My current "window size" is set to the standard number of rows and columns, and there is no background image loaded for the term windows...it's basically clean, settings-wise. I tried changing the column and row values and seeing if it would help, but nothing changed. To clarify for everyone, i think terminal is working 100% fine, except that the actual window is only visible as the link above. Which obviously isn't enough to see anything...

*sigh*

I really don't want to do a clean install...

did a little more investigation...

if i open a terminal window and copy/paste the contents into a text doc, i can see that the terminal's functionality appears totally unchanged...it's just that i can't see inside the window at all...

messy icon text still there

Sorry if this is already in the thread, but it seems they didn't fix this bug.

Here's a small grab if you don't know. I'll report it to Apple again.

Spoof IE in Safari

Calebj14 said:
3. wheres the pref in safari to make it act like MSIE if a site rejects it because its safari and not IE?

You need to turn on Safari's debug menu and change the User Agent. There's a terminal command for this, but the easiest way is to use Safari Enhancer:

http://www.lordofthecows.com/safari_enhancer.php

Be sure to reset Safari when you're done so web stats show an increasing Safari population.

Since Apple seems to be releasing the new ATI drivers (unavailable at ATI website) maybe it would be helpful to send a bug report to Apple. Hopefully if they see the problem is occurring with more than one person, they'll do something about it. Otherwise, keep me posted if you find a fix.

Good suggestion. I never thought of that before and it makes sense. Don't pose as another browser when you can help it, so the world will know we are here!

And complain to the webmaster (and Apple) when a web site doesn't work with Safari!

terminal size problem

I don't have the problem here but there's something simple you can try. The terminal preferences are stored in a file called ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist where ~ is an alias for your home directory.

Now you use TextEdit to open the file and change some of the fields, namely
<key>Columns</key>
<string>190</string>
and
<key>Rows</key>
<string>61</string>
Look at the values and if they seem reasonable you probably have a problem with the particular font you're using, ie
<key>NSFixedPitchFont</key>
<string>Courier</string>
You could try changing the value of the field to Courier to see where that brings you.

NOTE: I assumed that you tried this before: Do Command+Tab to select the terminal application and select from the menu Terminal/Settings and play with the Display and Window panels. Hope this helps

I no longer have the text residue problem on either of two machines and it would have occurred in the 2+ days of uptime.

Moving hidden text by Command + A, then Copy/Paste

Yes, when I've had trouble with a window, scrolling, etc., if I can tap one pixel inside the window then do a COMMAND + A, then ALL the text is highlighted and can be COPY / PASTED into a Text Document.
Likewise, if have have text, code, whatever that I need to get into a box small text box, then using an open Text Document can to write it out, then move the finished text into the small box or cell, again by COPY / PASTE. I've seen this done when the Text Box "window" is so small you can't see but maybe a single character. I think I picked this up from working with tiny spreadsheet cells. Hidden text.

I share your pain on the reinstall, Jaguar did that to me...several times. Wish you well.

And I can tell that you have really benpatient ;)

Well the Networking (SMB and AFP) is still ****e. Slow, crashes the finder, refuses to disconnect network drives.

Will probably be going back to Jaguar as I don't expect Apple to get Networking right in 10.3. :( Lets hope that they can get it right in 10.4.

You would think that something as simple at networking would be easy for Apple to get right.

this thread is incredibly long and i've read much of it...

but does anybody know why there are so many "negatives" attached to this news report? very curious about this...perhaps macrumors team keeps track of IP's or something on this? is it for real?

v

Maybe because the 10.3.3 still sucks. At least as far as the networking fixes go. SMB and AFP shares still have many, many problems. At least for me anyway.

Fan blowing

My fan is working fine- for awhile i was worried, since i have the 12" Rev A PB g4, but so far, so good.

I assume you had the fan problem before? If it's been fixed, are you saying your 12" fan is acting the way it did at 10.3.1? I'd really like to know, my fan is driving me crazy. Damn thing turns on when the drive is barely warm.

Stewie said:

Unfortunately, it's not that simple to implement all the forms of networking we want. Otherwise, they would get it right with fewer attempts!

I'm installing Mac OS X 10.3.3 currently on my Power Mac G4. So I will see how it goes. For some reason I'm getting the spinning beach ball.

Doctor Q do you know how to go about setting a network between a Power Mac & PowerBook that is using a wireless connection?

Since when was it simple? Historically, you might be surprised how much smaller and simpler Unix was before TCP/IP network code was added.
