Mac OS X 10.3.8 Released

File 'console.log.0'

I did a search from my good hard drive - and discovered that the file 'console.log.0', normally an invisible file, was taking up a WHOPPING 48.64 GB after the 10.3.8 update..... This could be the reason for the full hard drive messages I reported earlier... Just wanted to let you guys know.... Do a find for this file (if you can) and see if the results are the same.... Something's definately wrong with this update....

That's not the issue. It's the random nature of the revving that's the problem. If this update had increased my X800 fan noise somewhat, but it was a STEADY noise, I would have been a bit annoyed for five minutes and then I probably would have gotten over it.

Ding! For the win!

It's not the noise per-se, it's the variable pitch based on what you're doing. The slightest movement of the mouse sends your fans revving up slightly. I returned my G5 iMac for the exact same reason. It would be preferable to run the fans at a constant speed and "throttle up" only at key points.

Bottom line is that our systems ran fine and quiet with 10.3.7, now...not so much. Is it too much to ask to have the same functionality as before? Personally, I don't believe so.
 
Good & Bad

My 2 iMac G4's are running like dogs now, they were no trouble what so ever before the upgrade. Although I re-installed the update on one of them and it appears to be working fine, the other is struggling after it has been powered up for 30mins. Will apply the update again and see what happens.

Have installed it on my G5 and it is screaming (i.e. working nicely). The graphics update is evident, most noteably in the GUI. Expose and squeezing windows into the dock is so much smoother.

Haven't checked out the Cube which is my media centre, plugged into the TV and stereo (for watching DVD's and Hard Disk movies). I upgraded it to and ATI with TV out, using some german dudes patch to upgrade the ATI-PC card to a MAC card. As I have upgraded it to 10.3.8 and it is still working, must assume it's okay.

The pity of this story is I've never had a problem with and upgrade, have always read other peoples woe's on upgrades but now it's my turn. Not too happy about that. Very apprehensive about upgrading my PBG3Bronze.

Would appreciate feedback from others regarding the iMac G4 issues. Here's their spaces...

G4 700Mhz, 384RAM, 48G-HD, 33G free.
G4 700Mhz, 256RAM, 74G-HD, 27G free.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, I'm not sure what the problem might be. All I know is that my 1.25 GHz G4 iMac is perfectly fine, if not faster, after the update, so I doubt it's a G4 issue. (And yes, I know the whole "faster" thing is more psychological than anything... ;))

I'm also haemmoraging disc space. Absolutely stuffed full.

Do you have a file path for this bugger?

Glad to hear it's not just me.... Really weird... The file in question isn't the right one on my laptop, either. What's weird is that when I boot to my disk with 10.3.8 on it, do 'Get Info', you can see the available space getting smaller like every second - and the computer is just sitting there doing NOTHING... It's really weird - I'm gonna wait for an update from Apple for a couple of days, but if there isn't one, I'm wiping the drives and reinstalling Panther. This totally sucks....
 
My own three installs went fine. A friend who calls me for Mac help had one Mac go fine and the other hit the "disk space gone" problem. I told him what I've read here, and will post anything I learn. I hope everyone does the same.

Yep, on both systems. Followed another's advice on the Apple discussion thread - removed all iShock drivers (I went the extra step and removed all MacAlly drivers and prefs, period) and ran OnyX.... Worked like a charm on my desktop. Didn't work for the laptop - so I'm trying some other stuff - I'll post here if I have any positive results...
 
I ran a search with FileBuddy and found all the iShockx drivers and related logs, files, apps, etc. and deleted them all.

Then I ran a search for all files over 100MB invisible and visible and found a 1.31 GB monster (my HD is only 10 GB) sitting in

private/var/log/system.log

I sudo rm'ed it and restarted and now have my ~1 GB of empty space back.

I feel sorry for the poor SOB on the Apple Discussion boards who saw his TB FW drive fill up with a 600GB file!!

When I first noticed the problem, I ran top and saw the driver using massive loads of CPU so I killed it. Then I restarted into SUM and ran fsck.

I didn't think to recheck top; I forgot the driver loads as a startup item and it simply went back at it.

Lots of super info available here! I had no clue about the Activity Monitor. It answers/will answer many questions I had about what is going on behind the scenes.

Since I've just sold my 9600 on eBay but not gotten payment yet, I put it back in temporarily just to be 100% sure...and yep, it's definitely the X800 fan that's the problem, no question at all now. (But yep, the X800 sure is faster, isn't it....) So the question is...do I want to try one of those X800 "silencer" thingies, or do I go back to 10.3.7? I don't want to stay on 10.3.7 forever (especially if 10.3.8 fixes the Myst IV crashes as reported)...I guess I'll go back just to make sure the X800 fan didn't decide to go slightly wonky on its own and this is just a big coincidence.

Kind of a bother though. Since I went straight from 10.3.5 to 10.3.7 and had no real problems with either (except 10.3.7 did very much improve certain OpenGL functions), I've now developed the silly superstitious notion that I ought to skip even-numbered updates....

Turned out to be SBC DSL's fault. They recently put the kabosh on port 25 and you have to email them to release it for your account. Found out about it at Apple Support Discussions in the Mail & Address Book department.

The string that explains how to fix it is:
"Having trouble sending mail with SBC DSL?"

Gary Lieber posted the solution:
" On Saturday SBC invoked new security rules that blocked all SMTP mail services from providers other than SBC. (and forgot to tell anyone, even their 1st level tech support!) This blocking is associated with your primary SBC username and your DSL PPoE profile . The end result is that you can receive mail from your mail service, but not connect to send mail.

To get this fixed go to:

and request port 25 opt out

I figured this out only by trial and error, and finally getting someone at SBC in the US that knew about this new policy."

So nothing is/was wrong with 10.3.8. It is all SBC's fault and something in 10.3.8 brought it out that was covered up in 10.3.7 OR it was a timing coincidence since they are just now obscuring Port 25 on a roll out since February 1.

I can feel the 10.3.8 difference. It is significantly faster and smoother.

Thanks, Eric, you beat me to the punch. I was going to do the same with my 9600. Perhaps ATI will release a driver update?

With so precious few X800s in the retail channel at the moment I think we're going to be a minority asking for Apple to fix this new problem that 10.3.8 introduced.

i got a tip for you. if your sick of all these updates then DONT RUN THE INSTALL. jeeze i cant believe you werent able to figure that one on your own.

Well, here I am back on 10.3.7, and it's not annoying to have my computer on, again. Fan problem fixed. I don't think ATI will or even can fix this problem, since re-installing the X800 drivers over 10.3.8 did nothing...only going back to 10.3.7 worked. So I'll be filing a polite bug report to Apple (though it's not really a bug, is it...more like a misfeature).

One of five Macs we upgraded to 10.3.8 had this problem. It was the only Mac with the iShock driver, and removing iShock files cured the problem.
 
Solution to lost hard drive space due to MacAlly iShock driver

After removing the iShock driver, here's what you need to do to recover the lost space - it's Unix-speak and needs to be done in the Terminal


cd /var/log
ls -l


This should show you the file that's being a hog... In my case it was a file called system.log.0 - it may just be called system.log... I couldn't remove it using OnyX.... then type the following -


sudo mv system.log xx
sudo rm -f xx


The system.log file will be re-created when it is next written to.

This should immediately regain your lost disk space... What a pain... I remember when Mac users used to make fun of windoze because of DOS, but it seems the best way to do things sometimes in X is the good old Unix command line.... Funny how things have changed... :p
 
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but it seems the screenshot hotkeys don't work anymore. Can anyone comment?

You're not hitting Command+Shift+F3, like I was, and having the computer beep at you instead, were you? Command+Shift+3, on the other hand (and its 3 relatives) still work for me.
