G5s share the same programming and hardware?

There must be something that is causing all of these problems.

Why would one G5 iMac not have a problem, (not to mention other G5 machines) and others have a problem with fan speed?

Given that they were all produced using the same parts, there must be a common answer somewhere.

MacAlly Ishock is the culprit

Thanks for figuring out the iShock conflict. I just removed it. Logged in and out.

Marine Aquarium Frame Rates

10.3.7 with ishock ~120
10.3.8 with iShock ~ 55
10.3.8 without iShock ~140

perhaps it was also stealing some of my *snappiness* as well :)

Here's how to fix the Power Mac G5 fan problem under 10.3.8.

Go to System Preferences and select Energy Saver. Under the CPU Performance drop-down list, select Highest.

This worked for my Dual 2GHz G5 system.

I appologise if this has already been posted.

XBench shows significant graphics speedups for legacy G3s

10.3.8 Memory = 77.62 (Delta = +0.34%)

10.3.6 Quartz = 67.53
10.3.8 Quartz = 70.13 (Delta = +2.6%)

10.3.6 OpenGL = 78.94
10.3.8 OpenGL = 80.42 (Delta = +1.48%)

10.3.8 Drive = 60.82 (Delta = -9.19%)
(Drive Type = WDC WD400BB-00DEA0)

Overall 10.3.6 (7R28) = 66.65 %
Overall 10.3.8 (7U16) = 67.00 % (Delta = +0.35)

System tested: iMac CRT--err was, LCD refurbished. G3--err, G4 upgraded (engineering prototype).. 500 MHz G4, 512MB DRAM, 8MB ATI Rage 128 Pro.

Would have had kick @$$ system improvement except that the hard drive test shows a degrade in performance of 9%.. not sure that drive test figures are properly weighted. What kind of performance impact does the "random" test have over "sequential"? Sequential tests only showed a 4.3% decrease in speed, but the random test showed a 13% decrease in speed. Odd, same drive both tests, and the drive isn't substantially more full or less between the tests, nor should that impede performance I would think because the unix cache file is already occupying whatever space it needs. I wonder if anyone else has seen similar results in XBench.

I had that same problem with 10.3.7. I traced it back to my dLink Bluetooth adapter.

I hate to say it, but I have a DLink Bluetooth adaptor too, and it sucks.. I was an early adopter, bought the first one that came in to the Apple store. It doesn't see anything except my other Macs. No recognition of either of my two Apple wireless mice at my disposal.. none of the apple Bluetooth updates would work on it. DLink officially does not support it. I will never buy another DLink product. The Macally Bluetooth adaptor is cheaper and works with everything.. I like Macally products.. and the name is nice too! ;)

network boot??

after installing 10.3.8, the machine restarted but instead of the regular apple silhouette i see a blinking globe.. then a folder with a question mark.

i think it messed up my Startup Disk settings.. quick boot from 10.3.3 restore dvd and set the startup disk, things are okay.

i had the weird slow mail launch thing in 10.3.7, so i was running 10.3.4 for a while.

Onyx, Maintenance then the COMBO Installer - Still Not Sure

Won't consistently send mail any more. Get that server messaage then still doesn't send until I quit Mail and relaunch when it sends upon startup.

Inconsistent problem. A few things sent last time b4 not again until quit and launch.
Well I ran the Onyx system optimizer and Maintenance routines and still had the send Mail problem. So I hit it with the COMBO installer after running Repair Permissions again and twice afterwards. Still wouldn't send all the time. But then it sent two no problem. So right now I don't know if I fixed it that way or not.

At first it wouldn't send at all. Then I chose to "Edit Message" and pushed the send button and away it went. Then it sent two in a row. then it wouldn't send until after I tried several times from the Out folder. Totally inconsistent.

My buddy Bill Gates is here for the weekend and we're having a few beers, and he wonders how the heck Apple's bi-monthly software updates manage to actually SPEED THINGS UP when his bi-annual updates make everything so bloated and so bogged-down that programs will barely even run anymore.

(He asked me to post this question for him, as his PC just crashed again.)

LOL!!!
My eMac took on 27 gallons and never worked better! I may stay with Panther a long time as it works really well now. Haven't updated my iBook yet. Also, no prob with the iTunes Music samples and iPhoto is cookin'. :)

Happy camper here!

Different Sizes

The size reported in this article is wrong. The version of OS X 10.3.8 that I downloaded via software update was 16.4 megs, not 27+.
My 15" PowerBook 1.25 G4 Aluminum (rev 1) wanted the 16.4 MB patch. My D2 G5 wanted the 27 MB patch. The Combo is almost 100 MB. i say go with the Combo to be on the safe side. I wound up running it on top of the 16.4 patch to try and get rid of my Mail "won't mail" problem that still lingers - Onyx and all. Oh well, Tiger can't come soon enough for me. I'll be one of its earliest adopters.

I love Panther. But after having no mail problems lately since about 10.3.6, it's a disappointment to have some more that have no apparent fix and pop up with no consistent pattern. I have to fool around every time I want to get something sent. Then finally it goes - OR a pair go just fine and I think it's no problem only for the next one to not go until I fool with it and Mail several different ways. Surprise! Maybe it'll go next time.

Screen brightness going mad

Hi, someone else mentioned this earlier in the thread, and I'm having the same problem - my automatic screen brightness seems to have become incredibly sensitive since I installed 10.3.8 yesterday.

Even as I type (and the shadows of my hands fall on the light sensor) the screen fluctuates - it's very frustrating. Clearly, I could turn off the automatic function, but I like the idea of it...just not when it's doing this!

The install is on a 15" 1.25GHz PB, installed on top of 10.3.7.

Any suggestions / fellow sufferers?

Cheers

Dave

Installed and running without problems on my PB15 (including airport and airport express).

Except, I also have the more sensitive auto screen brightness adjustment.

Mine was a 27MB install via Software Update (and I was up to date with all previous updates).

I have PM G5 SP 1.8ghz and I haven't seen any differences whatsoever in WoW. I have an ATI 9800 Pro 256 Ram. I was hoping the framerate would be a little more stable. I have terrain distance to low and the rest to maximum. Average FPS is 30-60FPS. As soon as I turn terrain distance up, my FPS drops dramaticly to 10-12 FPS

Remember people... when you see an update in the jungle, backup slowly and carefully. Twice if possible. Remove all your external garments. Do not use mods by other gods and if you're a praying type, repair to permissions before and after applying any updates. Chant now, oommmm....

I am sick of all these OSX updates and security fixes.

You don't have to apply the updates.
You don't have to compute.
You don't have to backup.

You could just run naked on the Internet in front of Windows. :)

Best possible solution to your problem: Ship your Mac to me!

Well I don't ever see it in software update so I guess I have it installed.
This sucks! I can't boot my Mac except by CD!
:(
Is there a way to roll this back?

I am very nervous about installing the latest update. I have an nVidia 6800 Ultra for my 30" ACD so I can't boot off my G5 CD ( there are no drivers for the card ). I already sold my stock ATI card on eBay. I installed the June 2004 5.1.8f7 firmware when it was released and I haven't had any fan issues.

I guess I could clone my system to the Raptor ( carbon copy cloner ) before I do the 10.3.8 update in case it messes things up

safari is the most crash-prone app i'm using. it doesn't handle b-class java/flash programmers' code very well...

Which is part of why I turned off plugins. After turning off plugins I got a lot fewer crashes in Safari. It hasn't crashed on me in over a month. I only turn them on briefly if I have a page I just must view with a plugin like QuickTime movies, etc.

The other reason for turning off plugins is there have been serious security issues with the Flash plugin.

Boot CD

I wish I had a the site.... but do a google search for "boot CD" an application that will make a neanderthal boot CD for you. With your os and disk repair.

I think if you go to apple menue and 'OS X software' it is there.

Also - if you have an exturnal HD - take it and your 10.3.3 CD to Apple store - they will install it on HD and run all the updates to make your exturnal HD have 10.3.8. I fought for HOURS with Apple care for a 10.3.5 - but only to win... I could not believe how I had to 'beg' for a FREE update to software I owned, not to mention I bought the 6800 WITH the computer - it was not like I upgraded... not my fault it shipped late....

Try here

It works - it takes a good sweet time to 'make' cd so be patient - but the program BootCD works.

I get random crashes of the QuickTime plugin using Safari - this only happens with MIDI files, though. This issue has been around for a LOOONG time - I experienced it in System 7.X and QuickTime 1; it's still around in QuickTime 6.5.2 and Mac OS X 10.3.8.

Check your logs in Console. Is one of them much larger than the others? If it is, the cause could be some background application (like the controller app for the MacAlly joystick, if it has one) logging error messages repeatedly.

WOW! Just applied the update to my Dual 2.5 and the fan noise has just about DISAPPEARED! (My processor setting was NOT reset to automatic...) Before, my fans would rev up with moderate activity (like scrolling a page continuously in Safari), but now that same activity results is a very SLIGHT increase in fan noise... Wonderful update, for me! I've noticed that most of the negative reports about fan noise are coming from Dual 1.8 and 2.0 machines. Anyone else with a Dual 2.5? How did it work for you?

Well, my 2.5 was fine before the update, and is fine after the update. Don't notice any incredible decrease of fan noise.

Only thing that 'bothers' me is that photoshop tends to revv up the fans more than it should. If I use the eraser tool on a simple 400x400 red square, than it turns on until I stop erasing.. I can only shut this down by using the reduced energy setting.

Weird though, don't think the eraser tool is that processor intensive.

Does anbyody have this same behaviour with his G5 2.5 and photoshop CS?

I'd like to learn more about this issue. Can you mail me any crash logs you might have -> wowmacteam123@blizzard.com

Rob Barris - Mac Team, Blizzard
Will do. I sent in one last night via the internal error reporting mechanism. WoW crashed after selecting character and trying to enter world.

Can anyone tell me how to rollback this update? Can I just install the 10.3.7 combo over it to revert back to 10.3.7? I tried changing processor performance to "Highest" and it made no difference on my new fan noise.

Just tried it on my Dual 2.5 - no increase in fan noise whatsoever...
