Then you have read BS. Repairing permissions fixes so much problem that your computer might have. Even the Apple tech support tells you to run it as a first thing when you are having any problems.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to flame, but i'd like to read up on any information you might know of on the subject.

I've read this page: http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000410.php

I also work in an Applecentre where we 'repair permissions' as a troubleshooting step over the counter several times a week. It's never worked.

Apple should never have released something as buggy as Tiger was.

And Apple never release a OS with so much in it. People wanted Tiger, they got it i reallly don't see Tiger being that unstable and with X.4.3 things might be better

It's still worth it as the first step in troubleshooting - it only takes a minute, after all.

Had a thread about this a while ago. Basically I got an internship down here for working on an interesting project and have been here now for two weeks. In those two weeks I have found a girl, went to a dozen parties, a mexican wedding and had food poisoning... it's going great.

On a side note... how do you like Toast 7? worth it to upgrade?

Good to hear it, thanks for the update! PM me and we can chat more about it offline. Well, I guess it would still be online, but... ;)

As for Toast 7, yes, there were enough added features for me to make it worthwhile. Incorporating a "DVD Shrink" type utility into it, the DivX functionality, etc. - all worthwhile for me at least. Check out my MacGuides entry on it if you like.

Combo updater? Would that be same as the Software update?

Yes, just use the Software Update and you'll be fine. :)

I've also tried rebooting and still no luck with getting the update to show up. Any other suggestions? So frustrating.

Is there a reason you can't just download it from Apple's website?

Downloaded and installed just fine. EVERYTHING feels much snappier, finder,
dashboard, black board, snow board, even my watch, my cell phone and my
4G iPod...it feels like...like a 7th generation iPod. My brain as well feels much
snappier.

Disables Quartz 2D Extreme—Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics.

I guess that means the method to re-enable it no longer works now? I was hoping Q2DExtreme might be 'fixed' for .3 as it looked an interesting feature :)

Anyone else notice the "Architecture" information in Get Info that tells if an app is PowerPC or Intel? I'm guessing that's new to this update.

Permissions are the crucial part of Unix based system and should not be neglected.

And I call BS on your statement. Yes, permissions are a crucial part of any UNIX based system. But you do NOT find a "repair permissions" application or tool in any other UNIX based OS than Mac OSX. Ive used GNU/Linux since 1997, and I have never even heard of this "problem" before buying a Mac.

A permission problem is really simple: Either you have the permission to do something, or you dont. Every mac user constantly claim repair permissions when you see some erratic behaviour on a Mac system. I dont buy it. In fact, you would have to boot of a Mac OSX install DVD and launch disk utility from it, in order to repair your boot volume. Reason: It has to be unmounted before repair permissions work.

Just try for yourself after the 10.4.3 update. Click repair permissions 100x for all I care. You will end up with the exact same files with wrong permissions afterwards. However, booting of the install DVD and doing the same thing will correct the problem - until you boot from HDD again, and the permissions have been screwed up yet again. Prove me wrong :)

It's not repairing permissions on the widgets. It's setting special permissions..

uneditable Mail.app rules (ongoing)

My Mail rules are still editable... have you tried a second restart and maybe repairing permissions...?

Mitth..., thank you for the suggestion. Just fixed permissions and rebooted. Mail.app still won't allow me to edit rules. Arghh...

Are you seeing this in System Profiler or in the About This Mac window (or none of the above)? Either way, I don't seem to have it on mine. 1.33 GHz 17" PB, 10.4.3

My word. The speed.

First impressions are very very very very positive. Six months on, I think it's finally time to state that Tiger probably wasn't a waste of my money after all.

All I can say is that there have been a couple times that I have tried to replace a system folder and been told that I didn't have permission, and repairing disk permissions fixed the problem. I don't claim to know anything else about it.

Just click on any app and select "get info"

Under "more info" it should show the architecture:powerPC.

Nope, I'm seeing it in the More Info section when you use Get Info on an application. Or if you are using the column view in the Applications folder you'll see it in the preview of the app.
