Just downloaded and installed the Combo updater on my PowerBook. Unhappy to report that there is a problem, albeit a relatively minor one. Normally when you type in the Finder, whatever file matches the letters you're typing will be highlighted. For example, if you type "SAF" in the Applications folder, Safari will be highlighted. That's not working at all for me in 10.4.3, and it was working fine earlier today using 10.4.2. Now when I type in the Finder, nothing happens. The arrow keys also don't work in the Finder. Definitely a very annoying bug, although not a show stopper. I'm going to repair permissions and restart...

I updated with the non combo updater, and this bug doesn't occur, fortunately.

I'm finding Safari is a bit slower ( no I don't have any addons and have fixed permissions ).

Spotlight seems faster though.

Just download the Combo from the Apple Site and Install. No need to see it in Software update.

Here is the link to the 10.4.3 Combo download page

Installed from the site, everything went fine. Definately seems faster in responsiveness.

Edit: Disk utility is definately consistantly bringing up a bunch of permission errors, mostly with widgets.

It still is upsetting to me that software update wouldn't show the update in it. Has anyone else had problems like this before? What have you done?

Mitth..., thank you for the suggestion. Just fixed permissions and rebooted. Mail.app still won't allow me to edit rules. Arghh...

= Joe =
Ok then. The next step is a bit more drastic. Close Mail, fine the file ~/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist and remove that (for added security, rename or zip it, instead of just trashing it).

Now reopen Mail and see if you can make a new Rule (all your old ones should be gone).

It's worse than I thought :(. The keyboard doesn't work at all in Finder apparently. cmd-W doesn't work, cmd-I doesn't work, cmd-down doesn't work. The keyboard is entirely non-repsponsive in Finder. Works fine in Safari...

EDIT: Repaired permissions and restarted and it's fixed. After I restarted, my menu bar icons were all out of order and a couple were missing. I put them back manually, but I'm curious to know why they were gone.

Nope, I'm seeing it in the More Info section when you use Get Info on an application. Or if you are using the column view in the Applications folder you'll see it in the preview of the app.

And if you have an app that is already made for intel too, for example Xbench, it says in more info: intel, power pc

It could be a number of things and is certainly not uncommon. Possibly a caching issue by your ISP or the internet in general, where your computer asks if there's anything new, and a server between you and Apple doesn't bother to check and tells you 'no'.

All I can say is that there have been a couple times that I have tried to replace a system folder and been told that I didn't have permission, and repairing disk permissions fixed the problem. I don't claim to know anything else about it.
i have experienced that too. also sometimes when a program acts a little bit strangely or if i am trying to change icons of files and it doesn't work a quick permissions repair will fix it all up.

i've never been able to solve any major problems doing it (nothing that would cause me to go into an apple store looking for help) but it seems to iron out little quirks most of the time.

I just saw this in the changelog:

X11 windows no longer stay in the background after selecting the X11 application from the Dock or with Application Switcher.

Which I must say its awesome that they finally fix that. You had to double-click the icon since i believe 10.2..

You can thank me for that. I submitted a bug report. :D

Now if only they'd fix the other bugs I've submitted... :(

My Finder says 10.4.2 still too.

Same here. Looks like the finder version string has not been updated or they didn't make any changes to the finder.

I guess that would make a little sense for me. Cause I've always had trouble when doing updates on sites I maintain and I can never get Safari to update with the new content from the site, even though it's there and when I check on my computer with IE (just as an example, no flames necessary), it shows properly. Well, would this actually be a problem with Safari? Cause I've also heard Safari has these types of issues, even after clearing history and cache.

Did you say all my old rules will be gone?! That's just great - I love those software upgrades which force you to redo your preferences! In fact why don't I switch to Windows while I'm at it?!

Sarcasm mode off.... but seriously... that is not really an appropriate solution now is it?

Also I note that its MUCH worse than not being able to edit your rules - they don't fire at all! This means if you get about 500-1000 emails/24 hour period (like me) then this all ends up in your inbox. Recreating all those rules isn't in my list of 'fun ways to spend your monday'.

I filed a bug report in Apple's RadarWeb system, so I'm not just idly complaining at least.

Version 10.4.2 for Finder is correct.

10.4.3 is as stable as before (so far anyways). It says 10.4.2 in my Finder as well.. wierd.
But unlike some other posts, Front Row still work on my Mac (non-iMac). And even better than before! It responds much much faster than before.

BLoody hell...the download takes hours, what's the deal?
Downloading right now over wireless network at school. It says about 2 min. 56.8 MB. I have a 12" PB Super.

Hmm... I was trying to do a screen shot but now its too late, the update is already installing. Oh well...

Not if you renamed or zipped the old file, then you can just reverse the process and get your old (buggy) rules back. It's just a way of finding out if that file is the problem... :)

Also, I found this fresh (slightly) related support article: Mac OS X 10.4.3: Some Mail rules may be disabled after syncing with .Mac. I know it's not what's happening to you, but are you allowed to duplicate rules? You should maybe try this before (temporarily) removing the MessageRules file...

That was certainly interesting. After reading what appeared to be good results from everyone else I went ahead and updated. When I restarted I got all the way to the desktop and got a kernel panic. Needless to say I crapped my pants and then proceeded to do a hard restart. Luckily it booted normally this time. Who knows what happened.

I was proud of myself for having cloned my drive before the update. Resisted the "what could go wrong?" urge. :)

I'm VERY impressed. Tried that with Opera recently and even that was fairly messed up, don't even want to mention Safari 2.0.1...

But 2.0.2... amazing...!

The attached image is NOT the reference page... :)

Edit: Just a hiccup... image attached now...

The Acid test (http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html) didn't work properly for me. It was better - the image displayed, but the nose turns blue on mouseover, while in the reference image, it links to the png.

Finally. When typing in Finder to do a search it doesn't beachball and stick. You can actually delete, retype, keep adding. It is much more responsive. Maybe this is due to Spotlight which is now very usable.

This appears to be a pretty solid update. I used the combo.

hmm, doesn't fix the bug with Mail where if you set it as a start-up item with Hide ticked, it still appears unhidden.
