Updating Permissions

stupid question but I am kinda new. what is updating permissions? how do i do that?
Launch Disk Utility in Utility Folder. Highlight your System Volume - indented. First Aid pane. Repair Permissions button on bottom. Good idea to run before and after any system updates.

Would there be a problem if I go from 10.4 to 10.4.3?

No, I don't believe there should be... You shouldn't need to install prior updates sequentially beforehand, so you should be fine. Just use the combo updater and you're good as gold!

97 MB here on a 20 inch iMac. I wonder why it's coming in at different sizes. Maybe it's different for different machines.

my PB and iMac both had 56.8 MB downloads..

Got an iBook G4 14 933 Mhz running 10.4.2. Would it be better running the combo update or using the delta one? I heard a rumor that using the combo one will yield better results

Use the combo.

My PowerBook had the 97MB update. Installed it, all seems well. Currently using it.

Meanwhile, I'm updating my PowerMac g5 dual 2.0 with a 56,8MB update.

Open "Disk Utility" and select your startup drive. Any volume with OS X will show "verify permissions" and "repair permissions"

BTW, I'm running 10.4.2 build 8C46 on a G5DP2.0 Rev A and got the 97MB update.

After 10.4.3 update, I notice I can no longer edit my Mail.app rules. The rules window opens, but the rules don't open to inspect or edit.

Anyone else to verify? (Thanks.)
My Mail rules are still editable... have you tried a second restart and maybe repairing permissions...?

ok i did that right after updating. i thought i might have missed something...stupid me

I'm sure all this stuff about repairing permissions is mostly nonsense. I've never read a forum or article that proves repairing them makes any difference to anything.

I did however remember reading a looong article on why repairing permissions hardly makes any difference :p

Seriously though, i'd be interested in reading up a little more about it and knowing of any examples of situations where it's helped.

97MB update for the PB in my signature. Rebooting as we speak...

*crosses fingers*
UPDATE: Only took maybe 2 minutes tops to boot. Ran FF, Safari, Adium, Mail, iCal, Dashboard, iTunes, and iPhoto so far without any problems. :)

Ahem, and just when exactly did you end up in Mexico? And furthermore, did you get hit by the hurricanes at all? Come overt to Hawaii, that's where I'll be in a couple weeks.

Yeah, I'm definitely not an upgrade junkie - too practical for my own good, I guess. If I see a lot of value in the upgrade for my personal needs, then yes, I will (i.e.e getting Toast 7), but otherwise I'll just stick with what I have, like Office X for my word processing/spreadsheet needs (no need for 2004) and Final Draft 6 for my screenwriting needs (no need for 7 or AV).

Had a thread about this a while ago. Basically I got an internship down here for working on an interesting project and have been here now for two weeks. In those two weeks I have found a girl, went to a dozen parties, a mexican wedding and had food poisoning... it's going great. :D

On a side note... how do you like Toast 7? worth it to upgrade?

Combo updater? Would that be same as the Software update?

Then you have read BS. Repairing permissions fixes so much problem that your computer might have. Even the Apple tech support tells you to run it as a first thing when you are having any problems.

Permissions are the crucial part of Unix based system and should not be neglected.

I'm in the US. Yea, haven't had a problem before, so I can't imagine why it isn't showing up. Any other thoughts?

Still hasn't shown up for me. Can anyone think of a way to get this working in software updates?
