Just installed 10.4.3 on my dual 2.0 Powermac.

immediately after installing and before I restarted the Hard Disk started thrashing about a lot. I restarted and it's still doing it! I'm a bit concerned! It's never thrashed about like this before, ever!

I've got plenty of RAM (1.5gb) I wonder what it is?

Mine did too, but it finally stopped after about 5 minutes or so and is now running just fine.

Looks like the average reboot time is about 4-5 minutes. This is completely normal for this update. No need to be concerned.

OMG WTF. It freaked me out. It toook forever to boot, then when it got to the farken' screen - it was in "safe boot"! grrrrrr... I just rebooted.. Tooka long time though... a lot longer than usual at least..

god, if this thing is more buggy i'll be so pissed

I have to say I can very easily tell my PowerBook is much snappier when doing stuff in Finder and overall quickness with which the GUI snaps around. Folders open faster...much faster. Pref Panes load lots faster. Spotlight seems much faster and it doesn't scroll a lot when results are coming back. It just almost immediately has them done and sorted with just a tiny bit of sorting visually.

My restart took several long minutes sitting at the gray screen with the white Apple. After that was done, it just snapped right up to the login. I let it sit for another minute or so...since I'm nice like that. Logged in and it was just Blam!

Very pleased. Great speed increases in GUI. Feels much better. In fact, my windows spring open with the quickness they do on the G5 desktops. Much better feel. =) I'm very pleased so far.

Thanks Apple!

And I call BS on your statement. Yes, permissions are a crucial part of any UNIX based system. But you do NOT find a "repair permissions" application or tool in any other UNIX based OS than Mac OSX. Ive used GNU/Linux since 1997, and I have never even heard of this "problem" before buying a Mac.

A permission problem is really simple: Either you have the permission to do something, or you dont. Every mac user constantly claim repair permissions when you see some erratic behaviour on a Mac system. I dont buy it. In fact, you would have to boot of a Mac OSX install DVD and launch disk utility from it, in order to repair your boot volume. Reason: It has to be unmounted before repair permissions work.

Just try for yourself after the 10.4.3 update. Click repair permissions 100x for all I care. You will end up with the exact same files with wrong permissions afterwards. However, booting of the install DVD and doing the same thing will correct the problem - until you boot from HDD again, and the permissions have been screwed up yet again. Prove me wrong :)

Actually by running repair permissions off of the DVD you make the permissions become messed up when you reboot. The "receipts" OS X reads to set the permissions are read from the DVD. They are different than the receipts on your computer which are used when you run repair permissions booted from your hard drive.

Edit: For the record, yes I know the article on unsanity.org says this is not the case, but I was told this by more than one AppleCare person. I'm sorry, but I trust Apple's word over the word of a website for hacks. Also they say repair permissions only fixes apple programs, but this is not true. Any program that uses Installer.app to install leaves a receipt (this is kind of corrected later in the article but I just wanted to add that while I was at it).

Looks like Macenstein was the only site to predict the date of this release.
although they were off on the size.

Any one have dock problem

When I right click on something in the dock, I cannot do anything in the menu. The buttons dont even highlight blue. The only way I can get the right click menu to go away is by clicking on the upper menu-bar. I tried a finder relaunch, but that did not work. This all happened after the update. Thanks for you input.

So what's the consensus on the install type - the combo download or to get it via Software Update?

Seems like now the Finder preference to open in column view actually sticks. Yay! I can't stand any other view.

Address Book

In Address Book in the notes field, the date a card was last viewed is indicated.
Only, after a sync, I don't see that anymore...
Do you all see this "updated mm/dd/yyy" info?

[edit]The Update Info returned, don't know why...[/edit]

I always go with the Combo. Plus, if you download a large file like this and then install, you can't accidentally lose your internet connection.

Not if you renamed or zipped the old file, then you can just reverse the process and get your old (buggy) rules back. It's just a way of finding out if that file is the problem... :)

Also, I found this fresh (slightly) related support article: Mac OS X 10.4.3: Some Mail rules may be disabled after syncing with .Mac. I know it's not what's happening to you, but are you allowed to duplicate rules? You should maybe try this before (temporarily) removing the MessageRules file...

Mitth...,

thanks for all the help, inspiration, and tips. The culprit appears to be Mail Tags (akin to Act-On) which is a 3P customization to Mail.app.

http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html

Apparently, it causes problems. Without the Mail Tags bundle, rules are editable. Mail Act-On (same outfit) seems to work (so far).

Thanks for the warning on the .Mac issue.

Are you seeing this in System Profiler or in the About This Mac window (or none of the above)? Either way, I don't seem to have it on mine. 1.33 GHz 17" PB, 10.4.3

I have it on a G3 iBook running 10.3.9

Am I the only one that cannot download this update? It keeps having a network error. Tried it on my wireless and on my neighbor's wireless, and then my grandpa's wireless. Darn it. Never happened before!

I've got the 97 mb download as well. I'm thinking it's because I refrained from installing the most previous security update. Sorry if this is old news.

Thank you Apple, your hard work is appreciated.

My wife just installed 10.4.3 on her PowerBook. She said it took a little longer to reboot, but not that much. No changes noticed.

Now I will be all set when I make my switch soon. Hoping for next Monday. That way I can update all at once.

I downloaded from the Support web page. The download went much faster than thru Software Update. It was 97mb. Plus you have the dmg to give others to save load on Apple servers.

One really nice thing that came out of 10.4.3 is that my Powerbook G4 17" (the one with the 1680x1050 screen) is that I no longer have screen glitches where random data sitting in memory is displayed to the screen for a fraction of a second.

Anyone with iTunes 5 do the OSX update?
If so, did it force an iTunes update, also?

I've also noticed that kernel_task doesn't sit at 3% - 5% cpu when several apps are open. Mine now hovers around 1.9% - 2.1%. Has anyone else noticed the better bahaving kernel_task? If this is really the case and this stays, it may provide a little more battery life since the cpu won't be working as much when the cpu isn't as busy.
