I installed the Pioneer dvr-k05 dual layer dvd brner in my 1ghz ibook about a month ago. and in 10.4.2 system profiler reported it with burn support, but not apple supported.

after the 10.4.3 upgrade it is now reported as apple supported/shipped!!!!!

a few small things....... I had to reinstall my system icons with candybar..... oh yeah, and the UNO theme has the safari tabs bug (as mentioned earlier)..... and ONYX gets applescript errors.

other than that, i havnt noticed anything else.

No, he is right about the Acid 2 Test, it is not exactly like the rendering : the nose is slightly smaller and the chin is slightly longer (1 pixel line).

I too see a diff. But it is only in the nose size. And only slight. But I would still call this a 99.99999% improvement over the original.

VBulletin and Onyx

Besides not displaying VBulletin board correctly, I've just found that I cannot run Onyx - I get an "Applescript -1762" error when trying anything in Maintainance or Cleaning....

I'd love to see both of those. I just don't consider "hey I'm downloading it!" to be much of an observation. Same with the dozens of "me too" posts.

Once someone has posted "it works for me" and someone else posts "it doesn't work for me", what do a bunch of posts saying the same things add?

Some of us read threads like this in the hope of finding what works and what doesn't in the update. Unfortunately this thread has been less useful stuff and more of a general wankfest. And then as the thread gets pages and pages long, people start posting without reading what's already there, filling the thread with more redundant info...and the vicious cycle continues...
I like to see lots of 'it works for me too' posts in these threads, because then I know it's pretty reliable.

Maybe a poll would be more useful - 'Works fine', 'Some minor issues', 'Major problems'?

I don't like these threads. They just serve as post count boosters.

"I am downloading as of RIGHT NOW! WOW!"
I agree, but I guess you could say that we are guilty of the same.

However I installed on PB15 and DP2.7. The PB had no problem at all during D/L, install, or after install.

However, on restart of the DP2.7 A black, somewhat opaque, screen pops up and tells me to restart. So I did, but after I restarted the HD churned and churned for about 5-6 minutes and then just stopped. Go figure!

I'm glad I remembered to turn off Unsanity APE.

There seems like a lot of hate for APE and Unsanity around here and not sure why. I have been using APE along with ClearDock, WindowShade and Xounds for a while now (10.3X -> 10.4.3) and it has never given me a problem.

But I guess your mileage will vary.

But the update did seem to screw with menu bar. My Clock, AirPort status, iSync, Menu Meters, Sound, KeyChain and Modem Status were all gone. I just had to go back and re-enable all of them to show in the menu bar. But the worst offender was Bluetooth. Not only did it disappear from the menu bar, but my custom icon had be changed back to the default. I really hate when apple does that, but I have learned and keep a backup set of all my custom menu bar icons.

Things seem speedier:

-Launching, usage and ripple effect with widgets is much smoother.
-Genie effect is very, very smooth
-Safari is snappier, more responsive
- pages load faster
- launch time much faster
-Basic window manipulation improved
- smoother
- expose is running smooth as ever

I'm sure there are more improvements that I have yet to discover. Nicely done.

Does anyone know of a way to do the "Media Exchange Program" without having to mail away for the CDROM media? Is there some option to just freaking buy the CDs to begin with?

Safari was the first thing I noticed. Then moving Windows to the trash can.... sorry wrong windows. I mean moving a Finder window around seems a lot better. Ripple effect for widgets is greatly enhanced - I'm not sitting there waiting 1 or 2 sec for the ripple effect to happen.

missing second cpu on G4

has anyone had a problem with OSX not using the second proc after upgrading to 10.4.3 ? Sytem Profiler says 1 CPU, however "sysctl -a | grep hw" shows 2. The sytem is only using 1 CPU and my machine is dogging.

Anyone else have this issue ?

A few things

Gee, I can't be expected to read through all these posts, so appologies in advance if I'm duplicating info.

Update has stopped my eyehome software working, going to try a reintall (eyehome software), but suspect I'll have to wait for an updated version.

Worst is I can't connect to my digital banking with safari, phoned the bank and they are working on it, so it's not just my problem, it seems it's across the board (RSB in UK). Funny thing is firefox has stopped working with the bank as well. This is a real downer, I need to connect to my bank several times a day for my businesses, I hope someone sorts this soon.

someone asked earlier whether Mac the Ripper still works...and the answer is...YES! i, too, was worried that apple would do something to break MTR...and with MTR not developing anymore (or is it...hmmm), this would be a way for apple to make people buy crappy-resolution movies through itunes.

in sum, yes, MTR still works (and rocks!).

You mistake the word hate for caution. Unsanity calls their stuff haxies. That's what they are. Nothing wrong with that and certainly many of the people in this thread enjoy their work.

However, as you found out, something caused you problems even though you claim to never have an issue, at least with APE or Unsanity. How are you so sure it isn't related?

Anyway, Unsanity will no doubt have updates soon if they require any.

No Quartz Extreme for us guys... ever!

Apple said:
Disables Quartz 2D Extreme—Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics

Seems Apple does not intend to ever activate it and fix the problems it is causing...

Well, made it through the whole thread. I'll install it this weekend when I have time to putz around.

The update broke my scroll wheel!!! Its a microsoft intellemouse explorer 4.

Simple fix though, unplug mouse and plug it back in.

It was on 53Mb for me, as for my Mac being speedier, I don't know. I checked my hard drive space today and I only have 5Gb left out of 37Gb. :( Time to clean house I guess. At least I've got Backup 3.

.....quicktime fraking out my fans?

Hey, since the 10.4.3 update, has anyone else noticed that quicktime is making the fans on your G5 freak out and get hella loud every once in a while? As i was watching some southpark (both in h.264 and avi formats) my fans would start spinning waay up like the computer was heating up a ton or something.. and as soon as i quit quictime they would go back to normal. weird... anyone else?

Free RAM is useless RAM. Any "free" RAM should be used as cache and buffer for IO-operations.

When a page of RAM is modified, then it can not be reused until it has been written out to disk. An algorithm to preemptively write dirty pages to disk would then reduce the latency of aquiring memory pages. The pages would be effectively free (except for the requisite zeroing-out), but could still be kept as cache.

So, just because a system reports more free RAM, does not necessarily mean that I/O caching has been reduced.

Alternatively, with pages upon pages being used to cache every little bit of disk here and there, the page tables could grow beyond a manageable size, and affect the speed of VM operations, in which case it might make sense to uncache some things in order to restructure the page tables.

Who knows? As long as it's faster, who cares?

After reading this thread, Ive decided that a majority of users will not have any problems with this update, nor any others.

bit harsh to say "wankfest" but you are right, there is a lot of stuff being said that could go into a diffferant disscusuion, and when there is over 600 posts, would you read every singe 1?

Boo!

And I am not referring to a popular Halloween saying either. After installation, my Safari does open faster and loads pages a bit faster, but that's about all I've noticed of this update for me. My DVD-RAM drive will still not read any burnt DVD's, and let me tell you that's a real pain in the arse! Check out the attached pic of my system profiler, telling me that -RAM burning is capable but unsupported. What kind of crap is that! My machine is well within the specs of Tiger and Apple sold this DVD-RAM drive in this machine! GRRRR!

Installed the update, everything seems to be in order.

Finder's responsiveness is waaaay much faster than previously...

Thanks apple!

Also, Safari seems to be faster too!

I'm very happy with this upgrade...
