For those that look at some of these posts and think they should wait, think about your system.

Have you downloaded a few hacks, haxies or enhancers for Safari, Mail, Addressbook, etc?

Are you using apps that skin or change the base look of your windows?

Have you downloaded pirated or hacked or borrowed software?

Have you shuffled the placement of the core apps that come with the OS?

Are you using maintenance apps that clean your cache, logs, etc?

Do you have a lot of apps starting up at log in that aren't base apps?

If so, either disable, trash or rearrange your system to the more standard setup. Then load these things back into the system after the update to see if they work or cause problems. It is probably pretty rare that the core apps and OS will cause any problems.

I haven't had any problems with any of these updaters that caused me or my machines to panic or act all flakey. This latest dot 3 update is the best I have seen for Tiger in so far for as additional speed and cleaning up some annoying little bugs. Lots of new little features have been added as well if you read some of these posts and from my experience using it.

This is by far the BEST post in this thread...
Apple doesn't put out updates to 3rd party haxie programs. They update Mac OSX.
The way it's supposed to be.Not the way individuals specialize it.
People..Disable any haxie before installing this update and make sure you have 10.4 minimum before upgrading.
In otherwords..Read The Book!!

CandyBar icons changed, Natwest no longer works

Just installed the update on iMac G5 (not iSight) and most of the custom icons applyed through CandyBar have been reset. Natwest no longer allows me to log in using Safari too and although Front Row still works, the activation script now only brings it to the foremost app and doesn't actually activate. Finder, Dashboard etc does feel faster, although I haven't noticed any difference in Safari.
Nice speed change but would have been nice if the other things hadn't been affected to be honest!

This update keeps getting better. :)

Not only does my PB feel faster, but I can now actually use my HP laser printer! YAY. Ever since installing Tiger (it worked fine with 10.3), it refused to print anything but I thought this update might fix it up, and it has!

Were you talking about the Hp color laserjet 1500? Because i had problems with that printer and the update didn't fixed it for me...

I unplugged the power from the back of my iMac G5, pressed in the power button (the iMac made a slight fan sound and stopped because there was no power). I plugged the power back in and the iMac G5 booted quietly and still running the quietest that it ever has. I have the Processor Speed set to Automatic. Good Luck.
While it was running you yanked the power plug?

kernel panic

Don't want to worry anyone, but I had a kernel panic immediately following the upgrade. I had the following in my SU
OS 10.4.3
Pro Application
Pro Application Support
iTunes 6.0.1
ipod update

Comp= Dual 2.0 G5

After the restart everything seems to be fine. I think I'll wait before upgrading the entire shop.

The update solved my PowerMac Dual Mighty Mouse problem - A/Care had been working on my issue for weeks and had (apparently) given up...

OTOH Since the update, most of my VBulltetin-Jelsoft Bulletin boards no longer load properly. c60% of the time they load fine, but that other 40% they load funky to say the least..... Pisses me off really, because I am on VBulletin boards 90% of my online time. Incedidentally, this site is ok.

OK, I have NOT done this update yet because I have a question first (and am waiting to see how other people fare)...

How come when I put my iMac G5 to sleep, the fans go full blast for 30 seconds to a minute and then it goes to sleep????

This has been freaking me out for a few weeks, so any insight would be greatly appreciated. If it's something that the update will solve, then even better.

My G5 2.5 does the same thing. I haven't upgraded to 10.4.3 yet, though.

front row doesn't work anymore since the update...no matter how many times I installed and re-installed it...

I killed all of my hacks/mods before the install, downloaded the 97MB upgrade, installed, rebooted, logged in, opened Safari, logged in here, and started this post. No trouble whatsoever. My widgets were all gone when I opened Dashboard for the first time, but it was no trouble at all to put them back. I don't know if my PB will be "faster" or not, too soon to tell, but Spotlight certainly "feels faster", whatever that means. :D

It's identical to the reference rendering here.

That's three posts saying this same thing. Is there any point to posts like this? I already know that it works fine for some people, a bunch of people already said that before I even posted (hey I read the thread, how 'bout that?).

And I completely agree that people use threads like this to pad their post count. Seriously, half the threads are people saying that they are downloading, how fast it is going, how big the download is. What's the point?

Posts reporting problems or confirming fixes are useful, it's a shame when threads like this end up at 25 pages because most of it is useless crap or people posting what has already been said multiple times.

Great post. Which pile does it go into. The good or the bad one?
;)

Can no longer import songs from a CD into iTunes 6.0.1 using a 667 TiBook with combo drive :(

Tried the acid test #2 in Safari. It's much better, but still not quite correct.

I'm surprised FireFox doesn't do better than it does..

For a laugh I tried it under the latest version of IE... ROTFL.
What a mess... No surprise there.

Question. I know it sounds retarded but have you guys ever thought about rebooting before you install. Nothing says I love you to an OS, be it MS or Linux or OS X, like cleaning out the cobwebs before a major update. Just a thought.

Warning - Stupid Noob Question

How exactly do I repair permisions from the OSX Instal disc?

I have the Tiger 10.4 disc - I put it in, and theres no disc utility in the folder

What exactly am I supposed to do?

I've been repairing permisions using disc utility thats on my HD

natwest DAMN!

I was still celebrating the fact that I could finally use Natwest banking in Safari and now it's been kyboshed (no idea) again!

Damn.

I was just about to post how good this upgrade is, it is, and everything on my 20inch G4 iMac 1GB RAM is zipping along nicely. The Natwest thing is a bit of a pain but Firefox still works with it, and given how AWFUL the Natwest Banking site is, it's probably a badge of honour!

It hasn't sorted that strange Illustrator CS1 problem with saving files, but I've got used to that too now. Otherwise Mail is better everything seems sharper speedwise.

Yep, same here. I then have to hold down ESC to get Front Row to actually launch. And I can't seem to quit the app once it's gone away (had to option-apple-esc).

Maybe that would reduce the number of pages of the thread, but there is one small problem:
Imagine if only problems were posted. That would mean that it would appear that 100% of users had problems. No way I update. Even if only one person posts that they were not affected, that leaves 99.9% of users with problems. Now, I read most of the thread before I made my decision, saw that most were having success, and pulled the trigger. If the mods demand that only problems be posted, then I will respect that and probably not download updates for several weeks after they are released; but in the mean time I will update within hours as people overwhelmingly find improvements in the updates.

For real..

milo, I, for one, and interested to see which machines get the larger update and which get the smaller. I hope someone will soon be able to tell me what the difference is and why some get one and some get the other.

Besides, if someone wants to post fluff to boost their post count, I don't see the harm, so long as they know how pathetic it is to care about post counts in the first place.

*reminded himself to check his own post count - hey, whaddayah know! I qualify for an avatar!*
