My 2 cents

Just thought I'd add one more report. I waited a day to see what the ratio of problems to improvements were. Seemed relatively safe so I upgraded from 10.4.2 to 10.4.3 this morning (on a 2.7GHz DP G5). My machine had really been slowing down over the past two months maybe due to 10.4.2 and maybe due to whatever quirky things slow macs down over time (at least mine always do).

Upgrading went fine. After the restart, nothing seemed especially improved. Based on the previous replies, I restarted again.

After the second restart, things definitely were snappier (Safari, Finder-though not dramaticallly, scrolling in MS Word). Haven't heard the fan come on at all. X11, Act-On, Sticky Brain all work fine. Spotlight is better in that stuff doesn't seem to jump around as much as more info loads, however, I still get the spinning beachball waiting for it to finish.

Overall, its definitely an improvement but at the same time, I don't think this feels like the fastest mac I've ever worked with (which is a shame given that technically it is the fastest machine i've ever worked with). Glad I updated though.

That's three posts saying this same thing. Is there any point to posts like this? I already know that it works fine for some people, a bunch of people already said that before I even posted (hey I read the thread, how 'bout that?).

And I completely agree that people use threads like this to pad their post count. Seriously, half the threads are people saying that they are downloading, how fast it is going, how big the download is. What's the point?

Posts reporting problems or confirming fixes are useful, it's a shame when threads like this end up at 25 pages because most of it is useless crap or people posting what has already been said multiple times.
so what should these fora be for if people can't post their observations and experiences?

i'm sure some just post to pad their post count, but most of us are just excited about telling other people what they're doing...isn't that what these rumor/fan sites are for?

Don't want to worry anyone, but I had a kernel panic immediately following the upgrade.
Same for me (Rev. A 1.8 DP), but a restart fixed it. Runs fine now. I forgot to run Xbench (FWIW) to compare, but it *seems* faster. I'd be curious to hear if anyone sees a verifiable speed difference, such as fps in Doom III.

How exactly do I repair permisions from the OSX Instal disc?

I thought, from reading these forums, that it was generally agreed that you should not run Disk Utility to repair permissions from install disks, because the bill of materials was out of date on the install disk? Or am I remembering incorrectly?

PS, now you can Live Verify your startup drive in disk utility (you can't repair it, but you can verify it).

EDIT: added "to repair permissions"

Does it happen regularly and easily or only after a lot of scrolling? I just tried a bit and scrolled maps and sat views with no crashes...
Regularly and easily. It happens both with my powerbook, my 20 inch iMac (haven't tried the 17) and an old 450mhz iMac G3 thats in my office at school. i can't be the only one this happens to. at least, I hope not.

Update running well so far. Expose is, for some reason, very smooth now on my 1Ghz iBook G4.

However, they still didn't fix the one big thing that has bugged me since Tiger's first release...icons still appear behind the Dock! It's hard to click files when they're sitting behind it. Panther moved icons overlapping the Dock up to the next column (IIRC...).

For real..

milo, I, for one, and interested to see which machines get the larger update and which get the smaller. I hope someone will soon be able to tell me what the difference is and why some get one and some get the other.

I don't think the update size is machine dependent. As i posted earlier in this thread, I have two identical DP 2.7's one received the 56.8 update and the other the 97mb version.

Further, My MDD dual received the 56.8MB update, and the DP 2.7 that received the 97MB update uses an imported system from the MDD (i.e. the MDD is a backup clone).

edit: a Mighty mouse on the DP that received the 97MB update is the only difference I can think of.

What you say is true. Dot 3 is adding new special permissions that will be taken away if you fix from the original DVD but will be put back if you then repair from the Live Drive.

You are also right that you can now verify and repair your main drive in Disk utility. But you can only repair it from the original DVD.

To verify or repair your drive.

Place the original DVD in your computer. Restart. Hold down the option key. This will give you an option of which drive to open from. Select the DVD and proceed. When install program opens, go to the menubar and select Utilities. Then select Disc Utility. After that is done you will be asked what drive you want to start up from. Select your main hard drive. Done.

Can no longer import songs from a CD into iTunes 6.0.1 using a 667 TiBook with combo drive :(
I can on a 667DVI TiBook, but it did bodge up my ethernet settings, my router settings in the network preferences had the wrong address, so I could only go on the net with wireless. Fixed it with a new non automatic location and a restart.

Mine is definitely slower starting up than before and the screen seems glitchy.Maybe permissions will sort it?

I was still celebrating the fact that I could finally use Natwest banking in Safari and now it's been kyboshed (no idea) again!

Damn.

I was just about to post how good this upgrade is, it is, and everything on my 20inch G4 iMac 1GB RAM is zipping along nicely. The Natwest thing is a bit of a pain but Firefox still works with it, and given how AWFUL the Natwest Banking site is, it's probably a badge of honour!

It hasn't sorted that strange Illustrator CS1 problem with saving files, but I've got used to that too now. Otherwise Mail is better everything seems sharper speedwise.

i havent (generally) noticed problems with purchasing using natwest on 10.4.2 (im currently upgrading to 10.4.3) except however on the HP site i have a hp printer (as you do) and every time i want to buy somthing, it wont let me and says my bank hasnt auterised this transaction and all that nonsence, 1st time i dont think my funds were great but now i have more than enough to buy photo paper. lol.

oh, whats the virdict with the 10.4.3, i know the "facts", but how have people found it?

I've read through a few pages of this thread earlier, but I don't have time to check them all so sorry if this has been gone over....

Just curious if anyone is experiencing any quirks with AdiumX since the update. I used to be able to mouse-over any contact's name and their away message would be displayed whether Adium was the front app or not. Now the only way to get the away message to display is to have Adium as the front app and then mouse over, quite annoying.

For those of you interested in getting your AcidSearch back, there is a new version out that works :D

Again sorry if those have come up, I just don't have the time :(

Works fine here. X 0.85 and 1.4.3. It displays it fine even when it's not the frontmost app.

sorry, just noticed and may have missed this but my powerbook 15" 1Ghz is running a lot nicer, dashboard, expose etc. and safari are much improved speed wise.

Someone mentioned earlier that their machine seemed to be dumping (!) ram much more effeciently. i would say i'm fairly clued up generally and this seems to be the case (e.g. performance is consistant regardless of time since power-on, if that makes any sense at all?!).

MailTags 1.1 Resolves conflict with 10.4.3

Mitth...,

thanks for all the help, inspiration, and tips. The culprit appears to be Mail Tags (akin to Act-On) which is a 3P customization to Mail.app.

http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html

Apparently, it causes problems. Without the Mail Tags bundle, rules are editable. Mail Act-On (same outfit) seems to work (so far).

Thanks for the warning on the .Mac issue.

= Joe =

I am happy to announce that MailTags 1.1 resolves these conflict. You can download MailTags 1.1 from our site

There is actually an update to X 0.86 if you're interested, some added features I guess but not much else.

I fixed the problem with a little help....the update to .4.3 somehow switched a checkbox in Adium's preferences. Odd it would do that, but the update is the only thing I can come up with that would have turned it off. There is an option in there under Advanced > Contact List> that says show user info even when in background. I must have had it checked before because it worked, I just never thought to check it now.

Thanks invisible MR member ;)

Airport Bug still around!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not gotten a chance to read all the post here but i was wondering if anyone else is still having the Airport bug??

It seems to be effecting the newest iBooks with maxed out ram. there is a big long discussion about it on apples site.

While i was on 10.4.2 i used a program called Xupport to "disable" some of my memory. This actually seemed to help and make the probelms go away. Well i figure that the update had cured that so i took that little restriction off and restarted. everything was working good but about an hour ago the damn airport went down again. I know it is not the router as it still letsw wired signals through and if i put the iMac on wireless it still connects.

The only way for me to fix this is to restart the computer. This is really starting to piss me off!!

So is anyone else still having this problem??

Weird. Don't remember being notified about it.

Doesn't seem to any interesting fixes, but I'll download it anyway. Thanks.

No problem. I found myself in a restart the other day and when Adium auto-launched it prompted me to update, so I did being the self-thinking user that I am

Nothing major, but nice to stay on top of things.

Address Book Sync problem

after updating, i was asked when trying to sync my address with .Mac.
it says that 98 my address book cards will be modified, i only have 99 cards in my address.
so that's every card except one.
i hit OK, thinking it's no big deal.
but after syncing, problems occured:

1. those card with "custom" phone number (i put "skype" in the phone section, since there is no place for it in the messenger section) now becomes "other"

2. those cards with references (mother, father, brother, etc) all become "other"

3. some birthdays were changed

4. "home" or "work" messengers all become "other"

5. addresses got separated. for example, if a card's address were

1234 ST
City, State, 12345

there would be 4 address, each contains a part of the address (street, city, state, zip code, and so on)

6. some data lost, including phone numbers and emails.

next time, i am backing up before syncing.

I'd love to see both of those. I just don't consider "hey I'm downloading it!" to be much of an observation. Same with the dozens of "me too" posts.

Once someone has posted "it works for me" and someone else posts "it doesn't work for me", what do a bunch of posts saying the same things add?

Some of us read threads like this in the hope of finding what works and what doesn't in the update. Unfortunately this thread has been less useful stuff and more of a general wankfest. And then as the thread gets pages and pages long, people start posting without reading what's already there, filling the thread with more redundant info...and the vicious cycle continues...

Indeed.

*ooh! that's one more for me! :D*

Honestly, though. Whining about it does no good. I personally don't have a problem with "me too"'s and "same here"'s. If one person says they have a certain problem after updating, and no one else is allowed to say that they are experiencing a similar situation, how are we going to know just how widespread the problem is? How are those who have yet to update going to know if they should wait or not after only seeing one person post that it crashed their system?

well i updated last night. the reboot took about 1 to 2 minutes for me. after that my ibook went through the motions just like normal so im swell. :)

Someone's already posted that things went well. Your post was not needed.

Just kidding. Actually, I'm very glad to hear that the update was successful on your machine. :)
