Can't wait for tiger. I just hope it isn't being rushed.
i can't see what the pressure really would be for tiger. i guess jobs did put his foot in his mouth with the on-stage promise of 3 ghz. but it was just a press release for tiger in the first half of 2005. there wouldn't need to be too much saving of face if it got pushed a little back. no danger from longhorn coming out first.

hope that i don't get yelled at for responding to two threads with two threads...

When the 64Bit OS's come why don't apple just release a normal verson for the 129 bucks as 64Bit and then also have a 32Bit version for a bit more money ;)

It is a fresh install. Well actually it has been 5 fresh installs.

Ahh... there was one small moment, about a month ago, where there was an update via Software Update-- came and went so fast I didn't even write it down!

Archive installs work as well as erase installs!

Have had several discussions with Apple about this very topic. Well at least the part of supporting more than 1 version. They are very adamant about not doing it.
What We would have liked them to do was to make a true 64 bit version for the Xserve. Since the Client version wont install on the Xserve anyway they really already have 2 OS's but they don't see it that way. It is a "Think Different" thing.

Are you talking about the small update to a couple of the Tiger updates. That showed up in the Updater? Because it happened to me 2 times.

What I want is that people who have a G5 should be able to have a true 64Bit OS and the people who don't should not miss out on the new OS's that they release ;)

I agree with Apple-- keep it one OS wih pkg & install options.

It is a "State of Mind" thing-- as soon as you separate them, they will never meet again.

However, I do believe they should have enough flexibility to concurrently support muliple kernels (one per install).

I don't have an XServe, so was not aware that OS X Client would not install on that hardware-- should be allowed unless it is headless.

OS X Server installs on any Apple HW from an iMac Bluberry & later.

More's the pity...
I learn more from this rumor list than from the "official" lists where everyone is too scared to discuss anything...

... others might learn something too!

Yes you should try to install the client if you ever get the chance.. It's kind of weird. When you get to the grey screen with the Dark grey Apple the Apple jumps about 1 inch to the right and then it locks up.

Yes to the separate kernels. Should be able to ask what hardware you are installing on and have the ability to select a true 64 bit kernel at install time.

Isn't Tiger going to be the last OS X??

OS XI is coming in a few years (I'd say 2008). That means X will have been on the market for almost 8 years! It's funny because when XI comes out, Longhorn will already be outdated (some say Longhorn isn't even as good as Tiger).

Jobs said originally that X would be the OS for the next 15 years. That would put XI a bit later than you seem to think.

If a new version comes out about once every 18 months, that would work out just about right.

UPDATE:
Apple no longer has Automator Actions, Dashboard Widgets, Spotlight Plugins listed on their download pages. I guess they let the cat out of the bag too early! I don't mind though, as long as they have a good education discount.

Seriously i think that Think Secret is getting Canary Trapped. That would suck for us, but Apple wouldn't have to go trough with the lawsuit and all the bad press.

I mean, Think Secret told us about iPod Minis with color screens, and that was the first time in my memory that they were wrong about something so big. Plus it was so not likely it was gonna happen. That would be a sweet way to start the trap, and then move on in the leak group with this Tiger stuff. The April 1st part is pretty specific, and that would for sure tell them who was the leak. Unless of course, deplume changed it intentionally. But i doubt it.

For those of you who don't know what a Canary Trap is, it's when you tell a group of people in which you know there's a leak the same thing, but with a small variation for each person. Like Apple might have told its Pro Software heads that iPod Minis were coming with FM tuners, then the Admin people that they were gonna have a U2 version, and then....
So when you find out what leaked, you know where to look closely. Then boom, you give each person in that small group a different date, so you know whoever leaked April 1st and the "Gibson" codename for QT 7.

The leak at Apple has to be someone pretty high up cause Think Secret has been right in so many Apple market segments: hardware software marketing layoffs press events apple stores etc and we know that Apple doesn't tell its people about things they don't need to know. So they won't tell a whole division, but just the heads, or something like that. Can't be too many people. The other way to do it is to read all the stuff Think Secret leaked and find out who knew all those things.

What do you think ?

Apple is initially announcing Tiger on April Fools Day (April 1st) to get more press coverage than they would get on a normal day. Remember Apple has to "Think Different".

I'd say this is a good marketing strategy. It might get more people interested in looking into Tiger since 10.4 will be in a lot of news articles all over the place. The more using OS X, the better.

the more i read that the more real it sounds. but with all the Tiger downloads (automator etc) vanishing then i think something might be afoot.

Surely Apple would have given us more official details about the Tiger release date by now, especially if it's supposed be only a month away.

Why should they give official details before an announcement? That's what an announcement is, giving official info about something, right?
Just hoping for an april release... :)

I reckon they got their wires crossed on that one. Maybe their source said "new color iPod minis" Is that ambiguous or what?
ThinkSecret were right about "new color iPod minis", but they just slipped the word screen in there and messed up their good hit rate.

I reckon this rumor will be right and Apple won't go kicking ThinkSecret's butt. How could they? Everyone knows Tiger is coming. And there'd been previously speculation last year it would come around April.

There's been a few signs too - the dashboard comp winners being announced, the inadvertent Tiger links on the software downloads page.(If it wasn't for those signs, I'd be suss on the April 1 date)

An April release would be a great slap for MS. Not only will Apple have released Tiger on schedule, but earlier than their cut off date. It's like handing an assignment up before its due date - impressive! Whilst, MS have to keep moving their due dates back. They have to keep asking for an extension on their assignments.

And given the slippage of Longhorn, an April release gives Apple a little more time to get OS X 10.5 out before Longhorn. So when it does come out, Apple says "Longhorn? That's previous generation. That's something to compete with Tiger. We've moved on. Again."
