system pref panel

Im wondering why the "searching & highlighted" system pref panel doesnt highlight the Printing and Faxing. In the current version there are two "D"s.
Even though a new version could be different its more evidence as fake as far as I am concerned.

That field is fixed in a couple of seconds using resorcerer or another datafork editor, and can be set as anything. Since that info is in cleartext in the pdf-file, the "proof" is weak to say the least ;)

Just because something CAN be faked does not mean it is fake.

I leaned towards them being real on the outset due to the level of detail involved overall... not just screenshots, but concepts. That being said, as time goes on without contact from our friends at Apple legal, I'm becoming less convinced.

I'll remind everyone again that proving a fake by pointing out inconsistencies or "look how easy it is to do" is not very reliable. As evidenced by the many REAL leaks that were discounted as fake by so-called "photoshop experts". (Cube photos, PowerMac photos x 2, Panther screenshots).

Go review the many reasons why people felt the panther screenshots were fake (they were not):

Haha, not Tiger beta test...just beta tester for the spoken interface. Well I guess it's one part of Tiger so your misunderstanding wasn't totally incorrect ;)

Heehee. Damn! And here I thought I could get an advanced look at Apple software. Am I correct in thinking that you have to sign up and pay Apple Developer Connection or something like that to get early access to the goods, or is that not even possible  ?

firewall

"Apple has added new security features to their firewall, most significantly a Stealth Mode"

Maybe this points to a firmware update for the AP Express and Extreme including 802.11i and Stealth Mode? Big difrence between the old 802.11b asante router I had and my AP Extreme is the fact that the DSL Reports port scan gives me a failing "grade" due to the lack of the Stealth capability.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. But I won't hold my breath.

I really hope that 10.4 has a lot more to it than this. I bought 10.3 for Expose (love it), high hopes of fast user switching so Final Cut Pro could render one project in one user and then still edit another project in another user (highly disappointed) - besides permissions to files become a nightmare when using more than one user (useful when you have multiple users on the same machine though, Font Book (I like it), File Vault (use it now and then), and the 64 bit support for my G5. If 10.4 only has things like this no way I'm buying it. I would really go for major improvements of speed and stability for the G5.

The dock is crap. You can quickly fill up a Dock with lots of applications on it.

I'd much rather have a dock and menus where we can put apps on.. much like HP Unix Dashboard.. I loved that.. DockMenu does the same sort of thing.. which I use.

Why do we need Dashboard when we already have the Dock? Why is it the Dock and the Dashboard both remind me of Easy Access? :p

I have an idea: Why not put aliases to your commonly used apps right on the desktop? Then you can launch them anytime you want! :D Oh right, I did that already, in Mac OS 7, 8 and 9.

Any way we can get rid of the dock permanently? Not to mention, choose colors and fonts for the menu bar, windows, etc. OS/2 had the best way - open a font palette and drag a font to where you want the font to change; open a color palette and drag a color to where you want the color to change. And they had that around 1990... I thought Apple was supposed to be the leader in user-friendliness? :-/

Did anyone notice that the displays icon in the prefs menu is the old displays? If they were previewing 10.4 on the same day they were releasing the new displays why wouldn't they change the icon?

I'm thinking they are fake for more reasons than that (All pretty much listed above), but this icon is SCREAMING fake to me. Most of this is nothing new, but noone has seen the new displays.

abduction....?

..this whole posting is so unlikely that I wonder if Arn is himself today?

Could there be more than one Arn, perhaps 'he' is just a login name used by a number of people to hide their real identity from Apple Legal.

Let the "Is Arn really Arn?" thread commence

(yes, I am joking)

I'm generally not a conspiracy theorist, but with Arn "out of character" and Think Secret also acting strangely.... maybe the real Arn and the real Think Secret writers have been abducted and replaced - by Robots!

Or maybe Apple decided to use the rumor sites to their advantage and has paid MacRumors and ThinkSecret to post garbage info so the real deal can be announced at WWDC. So the no iMac G5 is trash as well as these screen shots. Then at WWDC Steve will get to blow every one away when he demos Tiger and announces the new iMac (or the new Macintosh, no "i" is my guess). ;)

Of course there is also the possibility that the folks at Apple don't really care at all about the talk that goes on here. Has anything said on these boards ever changed the way Apple does its business? Probably not.

Many of the principles of these screenshots seem reasonable, but the execution doesn't seem great. I have very little experience in software development (2 summers spent working at a computer game firm  ) but either development of Tiger is only very basic at this stage or these are fake. We "know" there will be a longer gap between Panther to Tiger than Jaguar to Panther, I would think this would mean there will be more new features and improvements. However it could concieviably be the opposite if there are less features then we pay less often, I think this is unlikely.

Hopefully we'll be blown away by the realities of Tiger this week. The source of this info and as arn mentioned the lack of Apple legal intervention makes these screenshots appear fake. Dashboard does sound promising, however it looks horrible

Really? Please post a link! I would LOVE to be an Apple beta-tester, but I thought that it was something much more tricky and required some cash as well. This link request is open to ALL members too, don't be shy! How do I become a Tiger beta-tester?

Dur, by joining the Apple Developers Connection. You may wish to just stay as a normal customer though given that ADC costs over 1K a year. Fine for us developers, but not if you just want access to the OS early.

I agree.

This whole thing is really strange and out of the norm. Apple isn't broadcasting like they normally would. (and when I say normal I mean not even at the Apple Stores!) Both Think Secret and Arn are acting very "out of character". Those screenshots were weird. Definitely not authentic, yet Arn seems to be defending them. And leaked at such an odd time. Why at this time? Why so late? We also have very little information about Tiger as a whole. With Panther much more information was leaked well before the preview, as well as early screenshots that seemed and were accurate. Something about all this is just too fishy and out of place weird. It doesn't all add up. Well, I guess we'll find out Monday.

Actually, leaked screenshots always show EVERYTHING about a product ;) We may be sure there's nothing more to Tiger than this, if they're real :D

Keynote Stream?

Does anyone know if Jobs' keynote is going to be streamed live or immediately afterwards? I've heard that they won't be broadcasting it to Apple Stores...

I was going to say:
Christ, its a page 2 entry... there have been worse articles... give it a ****ing rest will you!

Page 2 == Not very reliable

BUT... your joking so thats fine.

In my opinion, the screenshots at least have some credibility. This seems too similar to last year, with everybody discrediting the screenshots.

The dashboard would be awesome for me. I have been looking for a nice application similar to this, such as Stattoo and the new version of Konfabulator.

From what I see, the dashboard looks mighty suspicious, though. The "iTunes is not running" seems too similar to other widgets. What is more apple-like would be to automatically detect if iTunes is running, and display and hide the widget accordingly. As for the colors, I believe it is the continuation of Apple's color-coding effort, started with Panther with coloring of files and folders in the Finder. This might allow for customization of colors, or just an easy way to identify different widgets. (Keep in mind that Apple also went back to color for the iPod mini).

If this is a hoax, it is a very well-planned one. For the minor details like the creator application of the screenshots, I believe that is a detail that couldn't be accounted for, which adds much credibility to the project.

Other people also mentioned the different Quicktime icon, and other minor details that are easy to overlook in the design.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. I suggest that everybody should place their bet on Fly on the Mac.

I think Dashboard is real

If you watch the Quicktime NAB preview of Apple's Motion, they make reference to a "dashboard" in the program to call up certain functions.

I'm also not convinced by the lack of things mentioning the spoken interface in the system prefs. We all know that Apple is including incredible new accessibility features in this release as they have made announcements about it. I think they would have updated the pref pane to reflect that a little more.

I'm just reading all of the posts, so I don't know if this has been touched on (sorry if it has), but Spoken Interface is all within Universal Access. You can look at some screenshots I posted here.

Yup, it was touched on by dstorey. Sorry, but the information I'm giving is still useful.

Or, more likely, Apple has intentionally leaked false information for the dual purposes of:

1. keeping the real goods under wraps, and
2. sniffing out the moles...

Like he said, fill out the questionaire and you can get picked by Apple to preview some of their software, like Spoken Interface.

BTW, these pictures look awful. I don't like the search as shown in System Preferences. It isn't very specific (ie, where in networking can I find out about DHCP renewal?), and it looks awful with that faint glow. Please don't be real.

I think its getting increasingly likely some of these are actually real, which means some people in this thread are going to be eating their words!

I think that dashboard is the row of buttons and controls at the bottom of its window. For example, Quicktime Player has a "dashboard" at the bottom of its window with play/pause, forward, and back buttons.
