I don't know about y'all, but my sister bought the whole Powerbook + iPod deal a few months back, WITH the educational discount, at a local Apple store. All she did is look up her College online at the store, showed her ID and that was it.

Fishes,
narco.

Yes - you can get hardware with edu discount, but not software. I got my ibook with edu discount from the New York store, but had to order iLife '05 online since, as someone else pointed out, the stores don't sell edu discount software.

Does anyone aout there know if there is a difference between "Tiger retail" and "Tiger Education".

No, I don't think so. Apple is not Microsoft that releases number of diferent version of their lame OS. Difference in wording could be explained by two different tagets, and the fact that there is no edu discount on family pack.

I just browesed through Apple's online store under the edu category and i can't find Tiger Family pack for sale. :( So Ok, I may have been wrong., sorry for any confusion.

You are not wrong, it used to be for sale on the educational store, BUT it was a mistake, and it was soon corrected. The early buyers did get the discounted price though.

Cu!

DHL and Applecare

Piss & ****. Maybe they only use DHL for AppleCare services.

I am soooooo mad at the $%#(*%*#)@#@)#U$%#%#)()(@#@$&#$*@ people ar DHL / Airborne. These guys are HORRID. I hate sending ANYTHING through them as they will screw it up.

Example:
Monday April 18th - Will pick up (phone call "We are morans and cannot pick up on Tuesday")

Tuesday April 19th - phone call "We will not be able to pickup becasue we are morans." Show up at 1pm and pick up my iPod to send back to Apple.

Wednesday April 20th - Same moran shows up at door to pick up the package they got yesterday.

Thursday April 21 - Find out status. Call the morans, "we can't find your package it should show up, we will call you on Friday."

Friday April 22 - No phone call. My iPod shows back up at my house NEVER delivered to Apple.

Phone call: DHL: We have SH*T for brains.
Me: Duh! Pick up my package.
DHL: We are really morans. But you need us and we will piss on you.
Me: (Here I chewed the person out for 5 minutes, did not swear once)
DHL: Yep we are morans, say is that a doughnut.

Called Apple and they assured me that Tiger ships out Fedex or UPS. I am happy.

DHL SUCKS

Pretty good idea, except that the middle school where my wife works, and the grade school where my sister works don't seem to have campus book stores... nor do any of the high schools where my friends teach... Plenty of people with legitimate educational discounts don't have any recourse but to order it directly from Apple. (Which is no big deal.. I will still go to the shindig to try my luck at the door prizes... and undoubtedly run across something else to buy. Never fails.)

I suppose that's true, except that in education, instructors are used to catalogs and online resources to use their educational discounts. Very few places offer an educational discount at a retail store (they exist, but are often hard to find). In fact, most of my friends that teach at high schools often have to use purchase orders from the school itself in order to get supplies, so Apple's website-only deal there isn't bad at all. Since K-12 students don't qualify for the edu discount, the majority of educational purchases are easily at the higher education level, and they have campus bookstores. Of course I'm not defending Apple here--the educational discount should be available at the stores, too. I'd think there's a reason that they don't do it. I wonder what that could be, though.

All that aside, I've been able to use my educational discount at more than one Apple Store in the Bay Area for certain titles. I've since found out that this is a rare occurrence, though, so I guess my perception is off :).

I've had nothing but trouble with DHL/Airborne Express myself.

Everything something ships DHL it never arrives on time. So I have to call them up and they always give me a ******** excuse, such as "Were having a problem with the driver", or "The driver can't find your house", or "The driver ran out of time".

Every single thing that was shipped from DHL has never arrived on time. They're so freakin' useless it isn't funny. I never have any trouble with FedEx or UPS. In fact, I know exactly when they're gonna be at my house as they both come at the same times everytime something is shipped from them. UPS always comes to my house at about 11am, and Fed Ex is always here around either 9am or 1pm.

So I hope to god that Apple doesn't ship Tiger DHL. I'm having it shipped to where I work so hopefully it will be there the day its supposed to.

Agreed. - DHL's Tracking is totally screwed up. - I try to avoid them at all costs. -- As you mentioned FedEx and UPS are always on time. -- They generally both stop by my house between 12 and 1. I wonder what would happen if they both came at the same time. Fedex Guy vs UPS guy in a grudge match. lol that'd be funny.

<Off topic>
Both of my parents worked for the USPS (US postal service) and all the delivery people from various services (Fed Ex, UPS, etc...) were actually all friends and would help each-other out, either giving each-other driving directions or learning when people on the routes were usually home so they could catch customers home to deliver the packages that sort of thing.
but there was a fair amount of teasing. (I got to see it cuz my mom delivered mail on the route where we lived.)
one last note, both my parents (whom never agree on anything) both said that if I ever joined the postal service they would save me the trouble and "go postal on me"

I'm sure this has been asked before, but if I go into a store and and buy a mac mini (or other computer) will they give me any sort of upgrade coupon or would I be better off to wait until after tiger is officially released?

Its nice to see everyone is as anxious as I am. For those of you who supposedly already received your version of tiger could you tell me if the portrait monitor rotation made it into the final build.

I like that they changed the functionality of the display menu back to what it was pre-Panther. I never liked the "display x recent modes."

It seems Apple using DHL as their semi-official courier now... though they still use FedEx once in a while, but I'm a campus rep and everything from Apple (or sent using Apple funds) is shipped via DHL. My experience with DHL hasn't been too bad so far; actually, one of my shipments (from an online store) arrived early via DHL. I agree that their tracking needs some improvement, but overall I haven't had any bad experiences with DHL yet. (Personally, I prefer UPS.)

How do you become the Campus rep. for Apple ?

Does the icon in Tiger show the new ACD or does it still show the old plastic ones? Just curious.

Ooh, that's nice! It's about time they supported it.
We'll start seeing third party stands to replace the ones shipped with the aluminum Cinema Displays.

I hope there is a new stand for my iMac G5, I can't wait to turn it on its side. But then How would I put the DVD in?

Yes, the vestigial ADC-type icon is the same . . . which is fine by me. :)

OMG, what will the "widescreen is Jobs' gift to man" folks say about "tallscreen" ???
Tallscreen is part of the Mac's heritage also. It's great to see its return (at least officially supported in OEM hardware).

Lots of VESA mounts are available with pivoting right now, so yeah they're already here.

Just orient it so the DVD goes in from the top. It might be a stretch to put it in but it won't be any different from how the Cube was (it was top-loading).

Thanks for the tip, I was kidding.

This could be really handy for reading documents.

:) You never know when an obvious solution befuddles and eludes someone. One of my friends faces such problems (for real) all the time.
