A few of you have been talking about screen rotation, but what is it?

Screen rotation is pretty much what it sounds like. You physically rotate your display by, say, 90 degrees and then rotate your desktop accordingly. What you get is a desktop that is taller than it's wide, like a papersheet, perfect for working with newspapers or portrait pictures.

Fellows, screen rotation is Tiger is indeed a go! I just tried it out using my Dell 2005fpw and it works fine. I still can't see using this feature often, especially as it's just inconvenient to rotate the display. I could see this being cool if displays had motors that would allow them to raise and tilt automatically: why not? At least Apple finally brought it back in. Kind of silly though when you realize that their pro displays don't even support this feature without the VESA mount. Also, it's almost dissoreinting having to look at such a tall display (the 30" would be downright nauseating).

Ah, but just think what it would be like to have a 23 in. horizontal and a 20 in. vertical on your desk. Bliss!

Really? That's good to know!

.png is my format of choice for everything image-related :D

png files are good because they have transparency, good for widgets and web stuff. pdfs are still much better for printing.

Tiger problems ??

Has anyone who has received an Early Tiger had any noteworthy problems?

Such as Bluetooth being deactivated?
... there has been one report on another website.

QuickTime?
... other than registration too-early for QuickTime Pro.

Safari problems?

Mail problems?

I would imagine that they put this feature back in mainly for the commercial users. Think motion-adverstising in stores that have large monitors/flat screens turned portrait (this is very popular in upscale stores), on television programs in the backgroud (CNN, Fox use a lot of these), Airports, Malls, Etc....

QT, Safari and Mail work as they should, no problems so far. I did take a clean install though, so havent tested Safari with plugins etc.

As for rotating the screen, that option is disabled on laptops, at least if you're not using an external monitor. When searching up "rotate" in spotlight (I use Tiger in another language so I'll have to guess the English equivalent used), the "monitor" ( or screen?) pref.pane shows up, but if you choose it you get the message that the tab (the "geometry tab") is disabled because the screen used has no option related to it. So no using an iBook or Powerbook literally as a book.

Screen rotation on a mini with a 20" ACD works just fine, no big use until you get a stand that rotates though.

/ f

Excellent, thanks!! I have a 17" Dell Ultrabright that rotates on the supplied stand, and I've been trying to get the display to rotate since I got it and the mini a couple of months ago.

maybe the guys that hacked the motion control on powerbooks could hack the preferences and allow screen rotation, then whenever you tilt your PB on its side, it would rotate the screen, but literally rotate it, like in preferences. thatd be hot.

but then, of course, all of you punks have new powerbooks, i have a TiBook. so not like i'd be able to use it. but i still love what you can do with that.

How about iMac G5

Any confirmation on screen rotation for the iMac G5. Maybe I'll finally put in an order for that VESA adapter. It will probably get here the same time as my copy of Tiger.

Try Firefox. Its nicer than IE & works for everything on my Macs. I use several websites that will not work with Safari. For that reason I've stopped using Safari on a regular basis early last January.

Bill the TaxMan

Duh, browsing with my butt is nicer and more stable than IE. :)

Two notes:

1 - This is the first time in over a year that I have experienced a website [actually one specific area] that would not work with Safari, this includes banks, shopping and "IE only" sites.

2 - It is at Apple's own store site. My suspicion in that this is a new phenonenon, this error, and it has something to do with Safari, possibly from specific ISP issues, as others are reporting Safari is A-OK.

My home DSL [Qwest] went down Friday :( , as did most all of the region, and is still not up. I have a hunch that some of the internet issues I have been having [slow email access, severe lag in games and connecting to websites and dropped servers], are possibly due to the ongoing networking issues at Qwest. This Server Error may be resultive of that.

Who knows.

I don't know what this means but, The amount for Tiger came up today on my Online Bank Account statement; could this mean, they are about to ship???

Does it still says "Processing Order" on your Apple.com order status?

I know for a fact what happened

I saw a picture from someone who bought their Tiger at Club Mac and already recieved it.

I called up club mac and they guy said he had not heard of shippments going out yet but he would check. He came back on the phone laughing, apparently one of their distributers screwed up and sent it out early. Those who recieved it were by mistake.

Nope, its still Processing Order as of 10:38AM, but I will be checking back periodically. You know what you guys? This usually happens with my orders on store.apple.com, when they are about to ship something I ordered, they charge my bank account, hence it comes up on the online statement (BofA), then once the payment goes through, they ship it, hence Preparing to Ship/Shipped. Sweet, I hope I am right.
