Leopard was released 2 years ago on 26th October 2007.

My 2 machines with Snow Leopard both work the same as they did with Leopard, I don't need to right click the Space to select it.

Same here. I use a wireless MM.

But I've got Spaces activation set to a hot corner. I simply flick the pointer there and all my Spaces appear. Left-clicking on a space selects it. Right-clicking does nothing.

Just to be clear on my setup (since YMMV):

Running an '08 15-inch MBP with 4gb RAM, connected to a 24-inch display. Separate mouse (wireless MM) and keyboard (wired almuminum.) It's essntially doubling as a desktop, with a multitude of USB devices attached, including 7 external hard drives, ranging from 160gb to 1TBx2. So I'm swimming in USB hubs, but the MBP plus all wiring is nicely out of the way.

My MacBook Pro is more like a space heater after upgrading to Snow Leopard, and I wouldn't mind the extra heat except I live in Texas and it's still 85 degrees outside!

I have the same problem. If I visit any site with a small amount to flash Safari freak out and the fans click on high. It is really making me :mad:

Flash has often done that. At least before SL. It's always been horribly unoptimized on OS X, and is in general considered the bane of the internet.

I'm left-handed so right click for me is the same as left click for you :)

Thanks, did figure some out....

1 - No issues here, I've just tested and it works. The 2 pdfs open in the same pane but as different files on the sidebar. If files are bigger, they may open in 2 separate windows also;

2 - Well, I don't think it's wise to rename apps just to keep them on top, especially apps that may be used by other apps. Why don't you just use one of the zillion possible freeware apps that keep favorite apps easily reachable? Otherwise, just use smart folders or create another stack that has Stickies as a preferred app;

3 - I normally don't use Java apps, which for me are close to useless nowadays (just like Flash). But as far as I can tell, Java Preferences and other Java apps work just as well.

4 - Now I have Office 2008, but Office 2004 used to work fine as well (just slow as any other MS app, of course).

As for 1, I think it was a change in behavior and I didn't pick up on it. Thanks for making me look again. :eek:

I'll have to look at other options here but good idea.

Java preferences work just fine but after installing 1.4 and 1.5, I still can't get the Java app to run. Pretty much resigned to having to buy a different product that is compatible.

I, too, have Office 2008 but there are some things in Excel 2008 that weren't carried forward from 2004 (ie. older database import/export) and some bugs in 2008 (key strokes not working in the Paste Special - which I tend to use a lot). But I've been lucky here and haven't been hit with the force logout that others have reported.

Thanks for the reply!

Cheers,

I was having similar problems some time ago, but realized they are simply linked to low batteries. For other people, in some rare cases, interference with other wireless sources is also the culprit.

Another solution relates to dropping a pea-sized aluminum paper ball inside the battery compartment of the keyboard...some people say that the contact leads/coil may not be reaching the battery edge completely, so dropouts occur. The aluminum ball ensures that contact happens for those facing issues.

Batt is 63%....I'll check if they are tight in there....

Core animation fixes?

Here's hoping that 10.6.2 addresses the prevalent issue of jerky UI animation, which plagues many SL users regardless of CPU, memory or graphics resources. On my 4GB C2D system, exposé, dashboard and spaces are all jerky, and especially so when my external display is hooked up. I know of people with 16GB Mac Pros exhibiting the same issue! :mad:

Can anyone who has this build, verify that NTFS write is now supported?

There is a piece of software that you can buy or dowload trial to worked out with NTFS read and write partitions. however it would be great if apple add this support to the OSX Snow Leopard.

good catch.

I had data loss and corruption happening on the NTFS partitions when using NTFS3G an MacFuse. Files larger than 4GB are usually a problem.

The rumors I've seen is that OpenCL gets better for the 4xxx ATI cards (no other ATI cars supported, they just aren't setup right in the internal architecture), and there were HDCP checks for watching HD video in iTunes (see, this is something Apple would do if they were going to enable BR).

Actually, there were some articles that shows how ATI cards as far back as the x1600 can work with OpenCL, it's just that Apple doesn't want to enable it.

In any case, Uncle Walt thought Vista was MS' best OS ever as well. The reality will soon become apparent once Joe Average starts using it, and we see what happens over the first 6 months. Vista testers praised Vista to the skies as well, and the reality ended up being a complete 180. It all comes out in the wash. When it comes to MS, believe nothing until you've had a good long time to see things in action.

Vista testers said it was amazing, but slow. Which it was (and still is). Windows 7 testers report amazing, and fast. I think the average joe will think it's good.

Anyone know if they plan on fixing OpenGL? Scores have dropped to almost half using xbench and don't tell this Ee, computer certified past IT person it doesn't matter. It does.
Example
past MacBooks
openGLscores;
70%
110%
140% switch from intel to nvidia gma
171% you could now run motion on a MacBook but still no gamin
two weeks later Pple release, quietly 1300x or x1300 and the score goes from 171%!down to 70% and yew, you guess it, no more motion on a MacBook. I don't have a MacBook but was fumed.
Why? Because other than motion it affected nothing else, you could still not play games nor run autocad,lol but it affected motion only.

So what did apple do when it came out with a better nvidia chip that ran motion, it removed FireWire and fanboys said it was a space issue. The mac, formally pc switchers knew better, there was plenty of space so in time the brought FireWire back so it threw the fanboys theory under a bus.

So waiting to see if they fix OpenGL as even the macpro have lower numbers then 10.5.8 does or 10.4.11. The better the OpenGL the better ven the screen redraw meaning no glitches when recording in 2d Logic. Yes it can be hard to wrap your head around as science is not for everyone but slow openGL has a snow ball affect on overall system performance.
Will benchmark all the various os's and post it here in a few minutes

Posted from iPhone. Sorry for spelling and grammar.

EDIT UPDATE: Okay, here is just a few examples, I ran xBench 3 times, normally divide by 3 to get an average, this time, I chose the highest as I have a wedding to attend at 4:00 Pacific.
Example for Audio, FPU combined with CPU, but leans more on FPU, determines how many virtual instruments you can use, example, Addictive Drums or EWQLSO (Orhestra Plug In)

10.5.7[/B]
CPU Test 145.70
FPB (I will use this from here on out as this means Floating Point Basic)=132.7
FPL (Floating Point Library) 146.86
OpenGL= 152.13
So this says the macbook 2.4 is 46% faster with 10.5.7, now to the next OS

Opps forgot 10.4.11
CPU=124.25
FPB= 135.41
FPL= 88.63 (this libray number is important as you'll see as we get to Snow Leopard, two different Hard Drives, same system)
OpenGL=136.37

10.5.8
CPU 146.82
FPB=133.17
FPL=146.56
OpenGL: 147.67

10.6.1 System 1 (yes I have snow installed twice, once with migration, once clean)
This is migration system where it copies all my programs'
CPU=163.87
FPB=130.72
FPL=260.71 HUGE JUMP, but not exactly what is needed for plug-ins or virtual instruments, but still very high and hope apple can take advantage off, haven't seen a great performance enhancement. Best was 10.5.8, lots of plug-ins.
OpnGL= 77.69, worse then a macbook when they took it down from 171% to 70% just to kill of MOTION users as you could never play games on it anyway, very greedy, as they still don't get the PRO SUMER in Audio/Video is a much larger market base and would sell millions of machines that were better than iMac and under a <ac Pro and that's without mentioning the sales the gaming would have as they make up more money sold then music and video combined. Apple has lost it sometimes, me thinketh.

10.6.1 CLEAN INSTALL
CPU 165.32
FPB= 133.45
FPL = 262.07
OpenGL:83.49

The good news though is that some other benchmarking programs show that in 64 bit mode, that a 2.4 is the same speed as a 2.8, but with Apple being Apple, let's see, would they rather give you a speed bump via software that almost increases by 20% or sell you a new machine? Another example, friend took computer to Apple store, was told his Powerbook G4 needed a new logic board as the tests all came back normal. Especially the RAM.

Knowing better, I removed the RAM he purchased, and sure enough, no problems, Apple sales people, be it Genius or trainers, are geared toward getting you to buy a new machine, even though they don't see a dime in commission.
It's part of their job, but more specialist's though.

STRANGE DAYS INDEED....

PEACE

Xbench is old and is not a good benchmark for testing.

I hope this fixes the issues SL has with Duel Systems devices. They worked great up through Leopard (Apple even included the Drivers in Leopard so you didn't have to install anything) but in SL it's all broken and so now I have to resort to BootCamp and use Windows. :mad:

That's not the point. It shows a progression in the wrong direction, which begs the question why?

The drivers are new for SL, I just don't think they are optimized for snow leopard yet. They have been rewriting the 64bit drivers for support with opencl. It is possible there's some bugs that's slowing down the cards in some areas. I mean they finally finishing up all 64bit drivers for the Intel GMAs in 10.6.2.

ATi cards got a huge jump from the 10.6.2's drivers update, especially with opencl's performance and opengl. It is possible nvidia cards will get some performance enchantments in 10.6.2 or later updates.

You don't have to use 10.6 if it is not making you happy. You can stay with 10.5.8 until 10.6 is more optimized.

I think it might be a valid point. Everything *useful* that uses opengl on SL has shown improvement for me. Objectively measured frames per second in WoW/Quake3/Quake4 and most importantly for me X-Plane have increased since switching to SL. And subjectively Maya also seems to move about high polygon previews quicker than it did in Leopard.

I beg the question is a benchmark showing a decrease in performance even relevant when real world apps show a different story?

For the people who are not having problems:

It's because you are using a specific hardware and not using a specific software. It's just luck! I don't have trackpad issues because my trackpad is not multi-touch but I am having video corruption because I have a GMA X3100.

I am actually wondering how much code is actually in the drivers which Apple use? how dependent are they on Intel when it comes to supporting x3100 and 950? I'm always amazed at seeing that the open source drivers and OpenGL implementation seems to be light years ahead of what should be paid programmers.

What pisses me off; Hackintosh apart, Mac OS is suppose to run only in a small range of hardware, so in theory it's more easier to address bugs. What is happening to Apple? Maybe they are using more personnel in other areas like iPhone development? Maybe Steve Jobs wasn't there to pull ears?

Code quality has nothing to do with limited hardware selection - having a lower number of variables only helps when designing the lower level components; anything beyond that is irrelevant.

Rant appart, I am happy to see all this bugs being addressed. I just hope for decent GMA X3100 drivers with 64bit support so I can have a 64bit boot in my Macbook 4,1.
Like many, I would love relative sizes in Exposé but I don't think Apple would "fix it" in 10.6.2

Makes me wonder whether 10.7 will be the eventual kernel switch to 64bit. will we see 10.7 being released at the end of next year given that this is the basis of a new OS where all the major features can be added based on the new technologies introduced.

Because it's not delta package. Files are overwritten, not patched. Patch (difference between two files) would take only few MB, but for the sake of integrity files are overwritten and not patched. Nothing funny and nothing unusual.

I've never liked the idea of delta - it might save a couple of megs and some minutes by the idea of patching is akin to hoping that things don't go pear shaped. Its amazing the number of people here who do install the delta, have problems but when they install the combo - none of the same problems crop up.

Thats up to Adobe, not Apple. Flash completely sucks on all platforms, it just sucks a little less on Windows.

Yeap, unfortunately Silverlight, the alternative, hasn't be full opened and standardised by ECMA - if it did, and Microsoft produced Silverlight development tools for Mac OS X - it would mop the flaw with Flash.

Im using the x3100 kexts from 10.6.2 beta on my 10.6.1 and indeed they are 64bit and seem to work fine.

Good to hear - any improvements in 'teh snappier'?

Here is an excerpt from a user who downloaded W7 on ELEVEN computers!!!

<http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/107925/a-windows-to-help-you-forget?mod=career-worklife_balance>

"In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple's Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That's no longer true. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows."

Seems like NOW there really is a CHOICE again.;)

And since SL is buggy and unstable, the MS Behemoth is ready to take back lost market share....

Aiden Shaw....help me out here!!!

Unstable? you mean useless users installing crap like 1password and wondering why things go pear shaped? the same nincompoops who install extensions BASED ON UNDOCUMENTED/PRIVATE FRAMEWORKS WHICH GUARANTEE NO COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN RELEASES and then whine when things go down the toilet?

People create their own personal hell - Snow Leopard isn't perfect but it is a f---k load better than Vista was at this point.

ZFS is not needed or is actually that good ATM. Plus its future is a little bit in the dark.

So integrating Mail/iCal/Address Book in other words? yay well finally have something comparable to Outlook.

They could just buy the code from KDE and just put the KDE Games on it. Heck just get mac ports yourself.

ZFS is also a memory hog - use OpenSolaris with ZFS and anything less than 2GB and it is a painful experience. Its like a getting kicked in the balls quick succession by a line of midgets one after another.

That's not the point. It shows a progression in the wrong direction, which begs the question why?

It is a new operating system that introduced a tonne of changes which has upset the apple cart. Given the size of the update I'd say that many of the updates have been partners demanding the fixing up of bugs that are stopping them from shipping products for Snow Leopard or providing updates for existing applications.

I just hope that Apple put 10.6.2 under the microscope for another 3 weeks - go absolutely hardcore checking. I would sooner tolerate some bugginess until 10.6.2 arrives instead of it being delivered soon with bugger all problems fixed.

Any idea if 10.6.2 will allow Macbook 5,1's to boot into 64-bit Kernel? Apple says they are "capable" and they have the 64 bit EFI but the boot file appears to stop it from doing so. I have seen hacks out there but did not want to go that route yet.

My Macbookpro 4,1 can already do that.. I guess Im not aware of the Macbook 5,1 not able to do so....

I thought it was only pre Santa Rosa that couldn't.
