So. I'm lying it bed. The iPad is nearby. It's 3 in the morning. I realise I've been woken up by an audible email alert, and want to mute the iPad.

So I either:

a) flick the mute switch with one hand - 1 step I can do in the dark by touch.

or:

b) open the ipad cover - possibly two hands required
press the belly button - the screen lights up, annoying my wife and shocking my own rested pupils
swipe the screen to wake the iPad from sleep
reach over to the down volume button and hold that for a second
reach up to the power/sleep button and press that to turn the screen off
close the case

Give me the mute switch any day.

And no, don't make it customisable. Consistency of operation on all iPads.
+1
Thank you, I could not have said it better. Also imagine having it alerting with an audible alert in a meeting or just sitting on the desk in or outside of a bag. If it is not already unlocked, you have to unlock it which causes yet another audible sound, and then press the volume rocker.

With a mute switch, I can just flick the switch even without taking it outside of the messenger bag.

Anyone know if 4.2 + 10.6.5 + iTunes 10.1 will brick the first generation AppleTV? I'd hate to loose AirTunes functionality on the AppleTV.

Why? I have options to change the way the Home button operates on my iPad, I can choose the most optimal way for me to use the trackpad on my MacBook. In what way would it diminish the usability of the iPad to be able to choose to use the hard wired switch as a mute button or a rotation lock? Especially since it's obvious that people have very valid reasons for using the switch for both of these functions.

My proximity sensor was never fixed on my iPhone 4 on the last update. Anyone else still having issues? Thought was to be fixed <_<

I remember reading that if it didn't fix your issue, something might be physically wrong and you should take it back to the Apple store. The update fixed mine, but didn't fix my friends', so that's what he did.

Guaranteed if the iPad came out with the "mute" switch already in place most people would be pissed off if 4.2 was changing it to orientation lock. ;)

Sometimes people just need to complain.

Of course. They've gotten used to a feature, and don't want it removed.

Why is it so hard for Apple to make this an option?

I can't believe how many of you are having a cry about the switch!! Presumably most of us are grown men/women.....and you're crying about a button being changed? But you're happy to scroll through 5 pages of apps and don't see that as an inconvenience at all?

Are you all upset that the screen brightness will be in same position as the new scroll lock? 5 touches of a screen.....a whole 1 second of your life. I'm guessing by time most of you run your finger along the side of the ipad to get the switch and then flick it that you could have done the software adjustment too.

Toughen up you whingers.

This!

Remind me that I owe you a man hug.

Seriously people....if this causes you to go over the edge I can't imagine what would happen if something really dramatic happened.

P.S. I have a 3G iPad that I got on launch day and I have maybe used the orientation lock switch twice.

Then the mute switch will hopefully be more functional for you. I use the orientation lock switch all the time, so that would be more functional for me. I'm not asking Apple to code in a new feature for me, I would simply like them to let me choose between what I find to be an extremely handy feature that is already implemented while allowing other users, like yourself, to choose a new, perhaps more useful function.

I was asking which bits are not 64-bit.

OS X already has a 64-bit kernel.

Wow son. Many many macs still use the 32-bit kernel by default, and can't use the 64 bit one. Both of mine do. Many new macs i believe still do even though they can be forced to by booting with the "6" and "4" buttons pressed. So THAT is what he was talking about.

I still can't figure out why 4.1 wasn't made alongside the iPhone iPod Touch version, did the iPad software guys take a long vacation? It's crazy to of had to wait this long for it. Oh well, better than some of the Android fragmentation.

The team that built iOS4 for the Phone/Touch moved on to the iPad once they finished the phone OS, Apple does not employ two teams to do the same work on iOS, they move on to the next project once the first is finished...

Yep. For better or for worse, Apple has always had a very one-track mind in terms of product development. That's not to say they don't work on multiple things at the same time, but i think it was steve who mentioned that they will divert people from one department to another, depending on the priority of the day.

Unless they address screwing up the iPad rotation lock-switch, they can choke on the upgrade. I'm not trading one flick of a switch for 5 gestures. That's not an upgrade - that's self-abuse.

What, are they changing it back to a mute switch? I'd rather have mute. But then I suppose if I already had mute and they were changing it to a rotation lock I'd be miffed, too.

I don't have an iPad, but I think I'd prefer to have the physical mute switch also. If nothing else, make it customizable or add another physical switch.

To be fair, double click the home button, which brings up the music controls even when the screen is locked, then press and hold the down volume button, then click the lock button, all of which can be done without uncovering the screen and disturbing your eyes.

Now, that said, I'm looking forward to the switch being a mute switch. I find it mildly annoying that when I want to turn down the volume, I often end up muting it and then needing to turn the volume back up. The issue of ease of access to the rotation lock strike me as pretty paltry...

Apple is so greedy. Profits is what drove them to stall 4.2 for the ipad.

How? They're making no money off of 4.2, at least not directly. It surely wont drive people to replace any existing hardware with new hardware since there is only one iPad... I don't see how they're making any more money off of it by delaying 4.2.

Apple removed hundreds of features from the iPhone? No.

I didn't say that at all. I said that there are hundreds of features that people could ask for an option one way or the other.

"Wow son?" I just asked a simple question. Evidently, the answer is that OS X is already 100% 64-bit with the option to boot into a 32-bit kernel as needed.
