So only for new Mac purchases. In Australia it's $15 dollars, but no idea how much it is for existing owners yet.

well what it says on the NZ site is:

Upgrade from Mac OS X Leopard for just $19.00.
http://www.apple.com/nz/macosx/

and this is what it says on the US site in the exact same place:

Upgrade from Mac OS X Leopard for just $29.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/

so it is definitely saying upgrade for $19 with no mention of that only applying to those who purchase between now and release day.

although you might actually be right, they have stated otherwise here

Apple said that Leopard would be released in October, and that turned out to be October 26. So I'm guessing that Apple will set a firm release date for late September.

Personally, though, 9/9/09 would be kind of cool.

No 9/9/09 is for the Beatles remasters and Rock Band. My money will already be stretched out. ;)

i dont get it
if blank harddrive then how you install snow leopard? does it still work?

Other comments here notwithstanding where they say "it'll ask for your original disk and then proceed" I don't think that's going to be the case.

I think you'll have to install from the original Leopard disk and THEN run the Snow Leopard upgrade disk on top of the clean Leopard install.

This is awesome news! Only $29 for a whole new OS? WOnder how much in AUD it will be.

Its not a whole new OS, its more along the lines of a heavy-duty service pack and some new features. I consider regaining 6GB on my install well worth it, along with some speed tweaks. And its only $29 for existing Leopard users, those on Tiger or earlier will have to pay $129.

And you should use Windows 7 before you post ******** you have read on a Mac forum. You are so isolated in your little Mac world you forget that 90% of computer users are using Windows.

$29 + the cost of a Mac is the big difference here. Snow Leopard won't run on my iBook, Windows 7 will run on the 1.6Ghz laptop that I retired because even XP got bogged down.

If Vista users want to use Snow Leopard they are going to have to pay far more than $29 for it. By comparison, the cost of Windows 7 will look far sweeter.

You're right WindyWoo. I'm an Apple fan but I realize this something other people clearly on this forum don't. Snow Leopard's price tag only appeals to Mac users. PC users would actually have to buy the computer itself. Snow Leopard's price tag isn't going to convert anybody. The fact that people want to own a computer thats more stable AND at the same time are willing to pay a little extra is what's going to convert people. Also, anyone reading this stop with the M$ is going down in flames and M$ is dead business, Microsoft isn't going away anytime soon. Stop living in a dream world. You give the rest of us Mac users a bad name. I have lots of PC friends and lot of them say they don't want to switch to Mac because Mac people are pompous @$$holes and you people talking BS on here are showing it. Stop you aren't helping anything or anyone. Not Apple, not Mac, so just stop.

I love this update because, essentially, the more you paid for you Mac, the more speed you get

inb4 it's not that simple; I know it's not exactly like that, but basically, if you have a Mac Pro you benefit more from GCD than a MBP user.

Anyone notice how if you're a tiger user you're required to purchase the new iLife and iWork?

http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

Tbh, it will be a small minority that require that box set really, Tiger wasn't out for that long on the intel side, and even then, most users have probably upgraded to Leopard by now anyway...

I think the box set is a pretty sweet deal too, making a saving over buying each product individually is always a plus...

So totally with you on that one. I'm going to be one seriously broke chick in September, thank the gods my birthday is in September.

Maybe I can talk her into getting the SL family pack for my birthday. >.> <.<

29 Bucks - Great! No Blu-ray, No ZFS - bad!

I still marked this as positive, because hey it $29, but...

C'Mon - Where is the Blu-ray support - this is ridiculous - where is the year of HD Steve Jobs promised?

And why is ZFS still not fully implemented?

And what about JAVA? What happened to this being the best platform to develop Java?

But, again, it is $29. I guess you get what you pay for. ;)

For anyone wondering how this "upgrade" SL DVD will work, I'm pretty sure it will work exactly the same as the $10 up-to-date "upgrade" Leopard DVD I got one month after getting my intel Mac Mini.

The Snow Leopard DVD will contain the full OS, not just patches. The only thing is that it will check if one of the disc volume on your Mac contains Leopard before installing.

What if you want to reinstall Snow Leopard if your System folder screws up and becomes unbootable?

If it's not a disc/hardware problem, then you'll simply use your SL DVD, which will only install over Leopard, OR Snow Leopard. No need to reinstall Leopard.

If you do have a serious disc crash (and do not have a Time Machine backup) then yes, you may have to get your Leopard DVD to get SL reinstalled.

With Oracle buying ZFS that could have put some kinks into the plans.

Blu-ray < iTunes Store

Java is up to %50 faster.

For the first part, what?

As for java, whats stopping you from writing in java? Did you expect Apple to release a new version of a language that Sun Microsystems makes? What are you trying to say?

so cheap in australia!

This is awesome news! Only $29 for a whole new OS? WOnder how much in AUD it will be.

I think this has been mentioned before, but i'm a little excited (and suprised): $14.95 AUD.

Crazy.. We usually always pay a premium here in oz, now we get something cheaper than than the US?!

oh wow i think im .. freaking out.

I am simply psyched about getting it for the fact that Grand Central will take much better advantage of my Core 2 Duo. That will be nice.

I'm not convinced that Grand Central is going to give much if any performance increase to Core 2 Duo systems. I would think that the kernel has already been heavily optimized for two cpus, and that Grand Central will enable it to scale to a higher number of cpus.

I consider regaining 6GB on my install well worth it

Isn't 6GB just a pittance these days? To me it seems hardly worth mentioning.

No offence but... I don't believe you. Seriously? I hope so, that is ridiculously cheap. Does anyone have any proof of this?

I disagree. I think GCD is instrumental in the improved performance in multiple areas for Snow Leopard.

Looks great. So will Force Quit actually work in SL? Though i rarely have anything hang on my macs, it seems whenever I do have trouble, FQ is useless against hung apps. had 2 bad crashes the other day where I had to power-off my iMac. (Might have been related to my m-Audio USB mBOX)

USB devices still tend to have a nasty habit of completely locking a machine and rendering Force Quit useless.

They're really going to have to rework the USB interaction layer of OS X. I just had some problems opening iTunes related to my USB keyboard. Seriously...

Few questions when I upgrade to SL from Leopard.
1. Would I lose my files under Documents and Pictures?
2. I installed few applications, would I need to reinstall them?
3. Few of the apps I bought are for Leopard, would it work on SL?

Thanks

1. If you choose the "upgrade" option you will not loose anything.
2. Again no if you "upgrade"
3. It's always best to check with the authors of those apps to see BEFORE you try and upgrade. There always seems to be a few apps that have problems. I would assume that Apple apps would work.
