I'd been pondering if they would do 10.6 cheaply. It really makes sense to me. There aren't a ton of end-user facing upgrades (ok exchange support looks amazing), but developers will be keen to start using the new features without fear that they're restricted to a small user base. For $29 users won't find it difficult to justify the upgrade, once 10.6 only apps start appearing.

I really hope it doesn't do this. Otherwise whenever you need to reinstall it you'll have to install 10.5 first. That's not going to make the install %45 faster.

I won't be surprised if it's just an honesty thing.

If you already have SL installed and you want to reformat, you wont need leopard. It knows you are gonna do and erase and install or archeive and install. Pretty sure.

Any chance they make this downloadable? I would love to not have to leave my cave and venture out in the public to buy this...plus I don't want to wait for shipping. :D

So, any moronic comments on how "expensive" Apple products are? What is MS doing now, offering its ridiculous Vista patch fix for free? We already have the most advanced OS in the world...for 29 bucks, SL is just gonna widen that lead.

WINDOWS 7 IS DEAD. AND I DON'T CARE.

Dude, come on, leave them some time to make up some excuses!

Better Graphics Card Support for MBP?

Hello All,

I tried searching MRoogle and the Apple Dox for Snow Leopard, but was not able to find details. Forgive me if this was answered already.

Did anyone confirm today whether Snow Leopard will support switching between MBP Graphics Cards "on-the-fly"? i.e. not requiring a logout and a login?

Thanks.

QuickTime H.264 hardware acceleration
requires a Mac with a NVIDIA 9400M graphics processor.

So no video acceleration before Unibody MBPs, despite the 8600M has it on the chip?

Do you actually believe what you write or are you just the resident comedian?

Snow Leopard looks good but it's not bringing anything to the table that W7 doesn't for the vast majority of users. Can't see this converting anyone else.

That price is incredible. I read some comments from on Engadget (probably Windows fans) about how this should be free since SP2 and 3 were free. Difference is they didn't fundamentally upgrade the whole system. I think anything more than the asking price would be a bit cheeky.
Can't wait! Snow Leopard here I come!

In the Mac OS X Snow Leopard press release Apple has detailed the Snow Leopard Up-to-Date program as follows:

The Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller between June 8, 2009 and the end of the program on December 26, 2009, for a product plus shipping and handling fee of $9.95 (US). Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 90 days of purchase or by December 26, 2009, whichever comes first. For more information please visit www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate. Snow Leopard requires a minimum of 1GB of RAM and is designed to run on any Mac computer with an Intel processor. Full system requirements can be found at www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs.

Interesting is that when you go to the Up-to-Date page it says more information will be provided on June 16, 2009:

"Please check back on June 16, 2009, for additional information."

I can't believe that people are so stupid to compare OS upgrades to "Service Packs".

Everyone should check out this page which lists a ton of little tweaks. A few of my favorites:

––"Sometimes when an application or process is using the files on a drive, Mac OS X prevents you from ejecting it, but you don’t always know why. In Snow Leopard, you’ll get fewer of those errors and when you do get them, you’ll see exactly which application is using the drive, so you can quit it and eject the drive properly." THANK YOU APPLE!! Getting one of these errors and then having to guess what was being used on a drive was really annoying.

--"Advanced artificial intelligence analyzes each PDF document to understand the structure of its words, paragraphs, columns, and visual layout and create a map of the document’s organization. Preview uses this information to help you accurately target the text you want to copy and paste, even if the text is in columns." YES! Copying certain text from PDFs, especially citations for academic papers, was always a pain. No more!

--Boot camp can read HFS+ volumes now!

The sandboxing of Safari plugins is also very nice, but it's too bad it's SL only.

XP SP2 actually did fundamentally overhaul XP and it was free. Then again 10.1 overhauled 10.0 and was free too.

Which, of course, means nothing. This is a welcome addition at a good price. I'll be buying it.

If you want to wipe your HDD and install Snow Leopard on a clean drive, you insert the SnowLeopard upgrade DVD, begin installing. It won't find Leopard so it'll ask you for the Leopard DVD. Insert it to verify, it'll eject it and ask to re-insert the SnowLeopard DVD.... and proceed the installation as usual.

... at least that's how I think it will work. :D

I sure hope it doesn't work that way, for the simple reason that what you described is precisely how windows does it. :D

It seems like you are the joker here. Windows 7 offers a fix for ripped Vista users, that's all. Leopard is already the standard for superior OS experience, and SL is just gonna extend that gap. Windows 7 hasn't changed anything in its drivers mess, as well as a lot of other crap that already exists in Vista. People are converting in droves, so don't worry about MS and their poor OEMs...they will be dead sooner than you think.

You really have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, do you?

Whatever. You're entitled to your beliefs misguided as they are.

Screw the iPhone news. I'm going to run out to the Apple Store and get a copy of Snow Leopard when it comes out. $29 is an amazing price. Good move by Apple.

They're a bit too happy to chime in with declarations spelling the end of Windows and Microsoft. As misguided as it is.

I think we're getting great OS products from both Microsoft and Apple.

Wow, I wonder how MS is going to price Vista 1.3 Windows 7 now...

I think it's great that OS X is now 25M users strong. I'm sure they priced it right just to put that pressure on MS (along with the perceived lack of new features for end users).

I'm a little dissapointed to see that NVidia GTX series wasn't included in the Snow Leopard descriptions:

OpenCL
NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS, Geforce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130.
ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870

I guess maybe Apple is passing that torch to Nvidia? Spec's due to change before September?

Yep, but 10.0 was the very first version of a completely new series of OSes. I don't think that you can compare let's say Vista --> Sp1 to Panther-->Tiger or Tiger-->Leopard or even Leopard-->Snow Leopard.

That seems outright bogus. Windows users pay extra for a 64-bit version, and it's still not capable of the performance that Grand Central and OpenCL make possible. Even though most end users don't care about the technology, they will certainly notice the speed boost and the extra 6 GB of disk space — things that Windows users can't buy at any price. When's the last time Windows got smaller and/or faster from one release to the next?

OK, I'll ask the big question on everyone's mind:

Will Mail be able to open at login while hidden?
