For the next release of Safari I'd like to see a history bar similar to what appears when you're browsing in iTunes.

As for OS 10.7, motion recognition using the integrated iSight camera to control the OS would be a nice perk.

The desktop and laptop form factors aren't good for touch recognition despite the hype. I don't want my desktop covered with smudges and the motion of touching it would be unergonomic. It would also require special hardware meaning that all Mac's and Macbooks currently on the market wouldn't be able to benefit from the new technology. Motion recognition would be a possible solution that is open to all Mac's with an iSight. I can imagine just pointing a finger at an icon and flicking in the air to open it or swiping my hands to change Spaces.

I think OS X 10.7 will be released soon and be called Cougar. I actually think it will be released at the same time as the Mac tablet, which will probably be announced at WWDC 2010 next July.

It's likely 10.7 and the tablet will be announced at WWDC and released a month or two later.

My list of hopes for this OS are:
  • Full support for running on the new Tablet.
  • Fully 64bit, completing the transition
  • New Marble interface, replacing the Aqua look. Resolution independent and touch-screen friendly. Possibly a new native font to replace Lucida Grande, a dark menu bar, dark chrome windows and darker, flattened blue, black and white elements. Refreshed Application and other icons systemwide. Context menus take on the white-on-black look of the Snow Leopard dock systemwide.
  • Major updates to the bundled apps. Mail, iCal, Address Book etc to receive big visual and feature overhauls, while a new dedicated RSS app is added to lineup.
  • New-look Dock, featuring badge notifications even when app is closed (i.e. Mail, iCal etc), application groupings, optional thumbnail views.
  • New Spaces, with each space being nameable and each space having its own desktop background if wanted by the user. Automatic association detection
  • Vastly improved Finder with new tools for file-managing and organisation, folder encryption and protection
  • Ability to run iPhone apps?
  • App Store for OS X? Easy and clean install, uninstall of Apps.
  • More MobileMe features, such as automatic backing up to iDisk?
After the under-the-hood enhancements of Snow Leopard, I think the next major end-user evolution of OS X will come with 10.7. It'll cost the full $129 again, methinks.

I'm hoping Cougar and iLife '10 will revolutionise the experience for consumers.

What are your hopes and expectations for the next version of OS X?

Yes I like this list. Not sure when it will come out but. New GUI would be fun. I really like Quicktime X new look. But anything new would be good I think.

- Apple Store App for OSX, apple store in iTunes its an big ****.
Not going to happen. Apple's websites provides plenty of room to advertise. The App stores approval process, revenue fees and payment are all reasons as to why this would be avoided. Also, it's non-sensical.

- Trash erase without confirmation option.
Seems more good then harm. I believe that Onyx or one of the other customization tools allowed you to remove this option at one point.

- Mail auto redirection junk emails to specified folder. Like GMail Spams.
You can do that yourself or have Intego do that. Also, that would be in a Mail update, not specifically needed in an OS release.

- iCal special dates... Chrismas and others. Change when change country.
What about for those of us that are not religious? You can make your own calendar, having some developers at Cupertino make one for you seems a little bit of a waste of time. That time could be much better spent on the Powerbook G5.

- Safari close tabs with third mouse button.
That would not be that hard to script. How would that work on a notebook?

I think a restraining order should be put on threads like this until summer 2011 :p

Umm can already empty the trash without a notification...

EDIT - Beaten to it lol

not this already:rolleyes:....
i think im going to go start a Mac OS XXI 21.8 Discussion.

I have an issue with a standalone RSS app. it seams perfectly placed in mail.

I do think the interface needs a lift. not marble, but a "true" more realistic Aqua. Not fake blue sidebars, and pinstripes, but something that makes me feel that the interface is like water.
Wouldn't that be sexy?:D

Hate to self quote, but here's a link in support of this prediction to demonstrate that Apple is currently researching motion tracking:

Yes I believe the next major OS release will come in resolution independence and replace the damn Aqua (and the dated buttons and Aqua elements) for once and for all. I predict it will resemble more of what we've seen happen with stacks, quicklook/ HUD's, Quicktime-X. Pretty, minimal, darker in many areas.

One other theory is that it might be something Apple showed in some patent many months ago where the OS was in 3D. Not sure how that will make sense as it's more of a gimmick then.

I also hope that by then the MacBook Pro 17'' will come with 32GB Ram, 8core i7 and Nvidia's tesla/ quadro.

Facial recognition as a password.

The current edition of iPhoto has built in facial recognition and it does work. Most all Macs, except the Mini, have a webcam (iSight) built in. Why not, as an option, let your face be your password. Turn on the notebook or desktop and it "sees" you so no more passwords to forget or, if you have the money, fingers to swipe. Just seeing you could open the Mac up. Members of the family or co-workers if you want it to, could be on the approved list. Voice recognition is also an option and for high security, even, retinal scans (probably with a souped up version of iSight.)

Down with "logon" prompts.

How about somebody kills you (or drugs you until you pass out) and then drags your laptop to your face to make it pass the logon? The rate of crimes attributing to computer robberies like such will increase the more we rely on entrusting important data to the machines and biometrics. I also predict that when people start to protect their banking information with their fingerprints en masse, cutting fingers will become the favorite pastime of street muggers.

One thing that I do hope for from that list is the automatic syncing to the iDisk. I know I can run an Applescript but would love it that much more if I could designate just a file to be automatically saved to my desktop and to my iDisk when I edit it.

However, I disagree with your quick timeline.

+1 on synching.

I already made a thread on this topic, but not specifically pertaining to 10.7 .

Here's what we really need (and I think SL could have easily implemented these features)

1) Spotlight needs Quicklook, an ability to right click on results and scroll through a long list of results.

2) Stacks also needs Quicklook and an ability to right click on items.

3) Ability to close windows in Expose mode. Something similar to Dashboard widgets.

4) Finder needs cut, copy, paste and refresh buttons and better file sorting. (Alphabetically with folders first, files later)

5) A better Photo viewer than preview, something that lets me double click and open one image in a folder, and lets me scroll through the entire folder from within the program.

How about if Apple didn't have any say on the Mac App Store? What if they just said "Go to apple.com/appstore, submit your application and it's instantly on the Mac App Store" or something. I'd personally LOVE that!

Move the Dock to a layer, virtually identical in concept to Dashboard.
ie: "+" button in the lower left corner reveals a scrollable list of all installed applications.
Drag frequently used applications onto a grid or similar organization tool.
Make the dock available in the hot-corner and mouse button assignment lists.

Aqua scrollbars changed to match those in iTunes.

Replace the three circular window widgets (the arcane trafiic light thing in the upper left corner) with a simple row of square boxes that do not require a mouseover to see the function symbol.
Add a new widget for fullscreen maximize.

Web browser addressbar/search/forward back etc... unified with the main menubar, rather than at the top of the content display windows.

Some interesting ideas.

If they improved the RSS capabilities in Mail I'd be happy to take that over a dedicated RSS app.

Mostly they should focus on the UI, the Dock, bundled apps and refining other things.

Oh! And I would love to be able to set an event reminder in iCal not only to myself, but for everyone in the event!

I think OS X 10.7 will be released soon and be called Cougar.

I doubt they would call it Cougar - A cougar is a puma, which was 10.1. That said, a Panther is strictly a type of leopard or jaguar also, so..

I like the rest of your predictions, though, but would go for OS XI: Cordelia :D
