How about a "move to..." command for the Finder?

Currently, the "copy" and "paste" routine for moving a file from one location to another is clunky. The original remains at the old location, and the user must navigate _back to_ the original location and delete it.

There is also the "hold down the command key and drag" feature, but that only works (at least for me) with single files (not multiple choices) and it works only when you can see the new location to which the file will go to.

There should be a "Move to..." command in The Finder that works like this:
1. User selects one or more files
2. User chooses "Move to..." command.
3. Finder presents a standard "put" (I _think_ that's what it's called) dialog that offers the user a chance to navigate to a new location and create a new folder if necessary.
4. When user clicks OK, Finder copies files to new location, verifies that they are copied and are duplicates of the originals, and finally deletes the originals from the old location.

This would be a BIG convenience insofar as file management is concerned.

iDisk

One thing that I do hope for from that list is the automatic syncing to the iDisk. I know I can run an Applescript but would love it that much more if I could designate just a file to be automatically saved to my desktop and to my iDisk when I edit it.

However, I disagree with your quick timeline.

What Applescript are you referring too? I've been looking for a way to automate iDisk sync for a while and haven't found anything.
Thx

i have a different question in mind: which macs that are supported in 10.6 will not be supported in 10.7? i would think for someone with a 1st/2nd generation intel mac, 10.6 is likely the end of the line, as those computers would be well over 3 years old assuming a 2011 release date. what hardware will serve as the cutoff?

- Apple Store App for OSX, apple store in iTunes its an big ****.
- Trash erase without confirmation option.

Screen shot 2009-09-29 at 1.35.40 AM.png

- Mail auto redirection junk emails to specified folder. Like GMail Spams.

Screen shot 2009-09-29 at 1.45.55 AM.png

- iCal special dates... Chrismas and others. Change when change country.

There are plenty of holiday calendars and such on the internet you can subscribe to. Apple even provides a good amount of them. Click “Mac OS X Software…” under the Apple menu, and under “All Downloads” click “iCal Calendars”.

I already made a thread on this topic, but not specifically pertaining to 10.7 .

Here's what we really need (and I think SL could have easily implemented these features)

1) Spotlight needs Quicklook, an ability to right click on results and scroll through a long list of results.

2) Stacks also needs Quicklook and an ability to right click on items.

Agreed except for one thing. Spotlight does have an ability to see a long list of results (“Show All”) and it’s much better than having them all in a right-click. You can also right-click and Quick Look from there, but it’s a shame you can’t from the menu bar.

5) A better Photo viewer than preview, something that lets me double click and open one image in a folder, and lets me scroll through the entire folder from within the program.

You mean like Quick Look? You can also cmd-a the contents of the folder before double-clicking, and Preview will open them all.

How about if Apple didn't have any say on the Mac App Store? What if they just said "Go to apple.com/appstore, submit your application and it's instantly on the Mac App Store" or something. I'd personally LOVE that!

That’s not too far off from the portion of Apple.com you get to by clicking “Mac OS X Software…” from the Apple menu. I don’t want it to be any more than this. The only other thing I’d like is some centralized form of Software Update that included 3rd party apps, but I can understand why Apple doesn’t do this, especially if we’re talking about apps not requiring Apple’s approval. That makes them look at least a little accountable for the apps, which could include anything from trojans to child porn. That’s what AppFresh is for. I never want to see any form of App Store that is the exclusive way to get software. I like how it is now cuz there’s a centralized place for it, but if someone wants to distribute it on their own directly, they can.

Move the Dock to a layer, virtually identical in concept to Dashboard.
ie: "+" button in the lower left corner reveals a scrollable list of all installed applications.
Drag frequently used applications onto a grid or similar organization tool.
Make the dock available in the hot-corner and mouse button assignment lists.

That sounds like an absolute nightmare for 98% of users.

Replace the three circular window widgets (the arcane trafiic light thing in the upper left corner) with a simple row of square boxes

That sounds like an incredible step backwards.

Add a new widget for fullscreen maximize.

Like it or not, “maximize” is just not the OS X way. It really makes more sense to have a window only take up as much space as it needs. I admit, when I first switched, it bothered me, but now seeing people browse the web with big bars of empty space on either side of their browser window really irks me. It’s more useful to be able to use that extra space to see what’s behind the active app.

Web browser addressbar/search/forward back etc... unified with the main menubar, rather than at the top of the content display windows.

That sounds like an absolute mess, all of that crammed into one line?

As for the discussion of a dedicated RSS app, I don’t see it happening. I think they’ll keep it with Mail and Safari, and leave the more powerful RSS to the third party apps. I know I wouldn’t use it, when I can use NNW for syncing so I can have my RSS available everywhere (although MobileMe subscribers would probably get this too if they did come out with a dedicated app for it).

What I'd love to see in mac os 10.7 is a decent flash performance.

Bad flash performance is the only thing that makes me think to switch again to Windows from time to time... as I do a lot of flash projects, and it pisses me off that an old pc has better flash performance than my 2000 MBP.

That isn't up to Apple to fix. Adobe write flash. If they could be bothered to code efficiently for the Mac, then flash would fly.

edit: by that I mean on Leopard, Tiger and Snow.

Pitch & Tempo Controls

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I searched and couldn't find it:

I have a 3 year old black MacBook, and just upgraded to snow leopard. The A/V controls disappeared on Quicktime. I'm a musician, and this was one of my favorite things about the mac (similar programs don't manipulate pitch and tempo as cleanly).

I can't install Quicktime 7 without erasing Quicktime X (I tried), and I like other features on Quicktime X.

I may just have to choose one version, but I'd prefer to have my cake and eat it too.
Is anyone familiar with this problem and solutions to it?

Thanks in advance!!
Pete

Even PowerPC macs could do it.

I hope they start using PPC's again. It's not fair that people like me have to go out and spend/waste $1000+ to get the latest and greatest Mac software and hardware.
Personally, I liked it when white was Apple's color, because most Win***s stuff is black. The iMac PPC G5 was cool.
Sorry to get off topic, lol. Just had to say that. But your ideas ARE cool. I don't see why people wouldn't like it.

Aloha applefan69,

Will PPC Macs even be supported under Mac OS 10.7? A lot of G4 Macs can't officially run Leopard - even more, perhaps even into the G4 realm, won't be able to run Snow Leopard (if Apple continues with the same strategy) - so by the time 10.7 (Lion, anyone?) comes out, it's anyone's guess as to which, if any, G5 Macs will even be supported.

HawaiiMacAddict

PPC is gone for good; they are not supported under Snow Leopard at all. Apple's not going to go back; future versions of OSx will continue to be Intel only.

edit: mmph..responded to year old thread.

+1, but I'm more than happy with Tiger. Only have one or two minor bugs. If it makes you feel any better, I directed prmccarron here ;)

The photo recognition log on would be awesome, no more passwords haha

i also want to see animated wallpaper support :p

Why didn't you choose to install QuickTime 7 when you installed Snow Leopard? It's under Optional Installs, you could probably find it on the install disk manually but it would take some searching.

How is there still debate over what the UI for the next OS will be? Have any of you even looked at iTunes 9?

It'll move toward itty bitty scrollbars (yuck) and two-tone heavy gradient windows (yuck yuck yuck).

I have a feeling it will be a combination of the iTunes and QuickTime UI. Still not going to be pretty. Hope they include an option to switch back to Aqua.

I am really hoping on full 64 bit, more stability (if SL does not bring it all), a new iTunes X, Finder cut and paste and more customization options.

Santa, I'd like:

  • I hope they cut the movies and TV shows out of iTunes and stuff it into QuickTime. I'd like to see more done with QuickTime and iTunes to lose some weight. (As a result, decentralize your media library and sync point with iPhone and iPod.)
  • I'd like to see Apple keep pushing against Adobe's Flash and towards HTML5. If Apple could really make browser support that totally rivals (and outshines) Adobe's Flash, it'd be a better world (or at least make Adobe write some good code [oxymoron, I know]).
  • I'd like to see 64-bit iWork and iLife apps and either make iWeb good for something, or get it out.
  • I like the GUI as it is, I wouldn't want too much of a change there.
  • Something for a 3-finger swipe up and down on the trackpad would be great.

Agreed!

I am really hoping on full 64 bit ...

I think we'll see that. Core Solo and Core Duo systems are the next to get the no new OS axe. But I wonder if Apple will extend 64-bit kernel support to the current systems that could boot it but are artificially limited by Apple.

I think OS X 10.7 will be released soon and be called Cougar. I actually think it will be released at the same time as the Mac tablet, which will probably be announced at WWDC 2010 next July.

Why the hell would they release a brand new OS months after snow leopard has been released?

Yes, following the release of 10.5 Apple did say that they wanted future OS releases every 12-18 months. But then 10.6, the "performance and stability" upgrade, took 22 months. So I wouldn't look for 10.7 any time before 2011.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a late '010 release. The theory being that 10.7 will focus on user-noticeable features only - things like new and improved dock functionality (to exceed windows 7), new UI (hopefully not too dark and dreary), broader multitouch support, possibly blu ray support (doubt it), quicktime x features to get to the point where the old quicktime isn't necessary, and the ability to run iphone apps in windows (which you can already do through the simulator - they'd just have to build the infrastructure for distributing the certificates properly and either turn on support for fat (or allow developers to upload two) binaries or use ARM). Throw in the inevitable new iLife apps, and there's probably time to get it done.

The reasoning behind this scenario is that it's been a long time since they changed the OS in a way that most people can actually see.

I don't think this will happen, just saying I wouldn't be too surprised.

My prediction for 10.7

OS X 10.7 will kill security updates for OS X Leopard 10.5.8.

But this is a feature, not a bug.

There is an app that already does this called "Xee".

I was thinking that if 10.7 were to be named, it would probably be Lion...

Thinking ahead into the future, I would love to see them come out with the names of planets... something like "XI Mercury", or whatnot.

Mercury (the first iteration), Venus (blazing hot .2 version), Mars, Jupiter, etc.

The interstitial updates between, like 11.1.1 could be named after natural satellites. So, for 11.4.1, it would be the Io update, 11.4.2 would be Europa.

Although, since there are planets with no moons, the naming convention there would be difficult to follow through. Mars only has Phobos and Deimos...

So, maybe just naming the main updates, like 11.1, after the moons of planets... I quite like Callisto and Titan...
