This OS that hasn't changed since 2007. If this is about bull(*&$ 'magical' scroll bars, then no more Mac purchases for me.

With all the effort going into iToys... lets see what the 2 poor suckers left on OSX development have produced in the last 3 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that a good portion of Mac OS X apps don't use standard self-contained scrolling viewports.

While they may use standard scrollbar widgets, they have their own custom code that scrolls the view based on values returned by the scrollbar (or the mouse-wheel).

This means that things like rubber-band scrolling wouldn't work on these apps since it requires the view to scroll beyond the end or start of a document and I'm sure almost none of these are ready to do that without any modification.

Also, having a minimalist scrollbar that appears over the content wouldn't work on these apps that don't use a standard scrolling view, since the view is not normally drawn where the current scrollbars are located.

I would guess that the majority of Mac OS X apps are in this situation.

Interesting. Also it would be annoying for the scroll bar to 'appear' over the content.. thereby covering content when you scroll.

Dear Apple,

This scrollbar idea is horrible, and you can bet that the entire community will hate it. This is not innovation, it is a horrendous idea that should not be implemented in any OS. Your iOS is not integrated onto a desktop, and never will be. You can be assured that this day will be regretted for the rest of your life. We will now laugh at your suffering and eventual dwindling of computer market share, which you do so poorly in.

Love, Microsoft!

P.S. Mind if we use this new scrollbar idea?

*snicker* I particularly like the end.

I'm pretty skeptical myself of the whole idea. Hopefully if they insist on implementing it, it isnt' exactly like iOS (or rather it's tweaked to work more on a desktop environment).

This lame rumour has been circulating for days in the forums everywhere. This blog just picked up on it and ran it.

Apple is not doing this. It goes against every once of common Usability sense there is.

Well, I hope so. Just cause it may work on one format doesn't mean it will another (I can see a reason for it on the phone since you don't have much landscape so every little bit counts, but you don't have that problem on a desktop and the standard scroll bars serve a function! Even though I barely use them cause I have a magic mouse, as I noticed you pointed out earlier, they do serve to tell me where on the page I am and if it is a really long document, it's quicker to just point to somewhere near where you think you want to be than scroll all the way to it. And I hate the rubberband idea, that would be just obnoxious).

It'd be worse for people like me, who have an MX Revolution with hyper scrolling. It'll just keep on scrolling into oblivion....

Take a look at the new iTune, this should give you an idea of what's to come!

As for one, I hate it, the ping link everywhere and genius link, god, I miss Sound Jam when I see what iTunes is turning into.

the iOS switch mode could be good, if we can switch it ON/OFF like Front Row or even better, get ride of Dashboard and put iOS there, it haven't take grip on anybody I know with a mac anyway.

I hope it go further then other social apps integration, NO I don't want to share my personal life with everybody! call me anti-social if you want, but this is getting ridiculous. The last few update to iLife and other apps have been around those social posting. I can't wait to post on twitter that I have empty my trash or every application I have install, how sweet...

I hope to see:
- Resolution independence, would be greatly need on my 27" monitor
- A FS (File System) that could match ZFS (ZFS is another Sun/Oracle failure to be because of licensing), they will loose like they loose from holding on Java for too long (people make alternative and stop holding there breath)
- What about a copy/merge inside the Finder, you know the super killer feature in about any other OS.
- iOS triggerable, please don't put this always ON and everywhere
- Virtualization (we got so many core those days), I would for one be happy to run OS X, iOS, Linux, Windows at the same time (ok I guess VM Ware and Parallels wouldn't be too happy, but it would not be a first for Apple, isn't it!)
- What about a Dictionary that support more then english? I know this could be a hard to do, but maybe you could hire some student part time to do it?
- Text Edit?! maybe a built-in decent text editor please?
- 2010, I still got to repair the permission (I do this since X.0, when will it end?), what about some strategy to prevent installer from doing stupid thing and modify them and force good behaviour? I don't the exact solution, but something must be done, this is getting annoying.
- USB3 support, we all know it's coming anyway
- What about fuse support for NTFS R/W built-in (no more need to hack the mount of NTFS)
- Multiple clipboard, probably one of the first thing I install on a a new machine along with a decent launcher, Quicksilver alike, so I don't have to touch the mouse as possible.
- Care to repair the wireless? this have been less steady since X.5 (I don't know what happen back then, refactoring that failed?!), the menu bar often jam or display the wrong status, auto reconnect often fail to even retry, etc... I must admit it's less often in X.6.4, but still a bit rubbish from time to time

It's a bit exasperating, since many of these points was made in hope to see them in X.3, X.4, X.5, X.6 and now X.7

But i'm sure we gonna see so nice social network base killer feature lol

Must be an :apple: employee or two spreading rumors to see how the user group feels about it. Brilliance at its best, research without the extra $$$. Inject a rumour and see how the market feels, then check on it periodically. :D

Yes, and in 2000 Apple copied the playskool interface with happy traffic light buttons and the Aqua interface. They went even further and produced a whole array of playskool colored computers!

Don't even bother with him. The guy is completely delusional.

Anything Apple does is gold, no matter how many people think it's an ass-backwards idea and everything Microsoft does is either stupid or stolen from Apple.

I got to play around with the scroll bars because of my buddy who works at Apple, they work nicely, though hopefully they work out some of the bugs before release.

You can still use them like a normal scroll bar, they just disappear after a second of not being used and reappear whenever you move the mouse.

ALSO you can now resize the windows from any corner, again, works nicely.

BTW, you can trust my information. I already said how they were updating the scroll bars to look like the iOS ones in this thread:

Great post, exactly how I feel about it.

I think you will all be surprised tommorow, at least I am always surprised with Apple's new releases.
I currently like the Aqua look Mac OSX has but if it is updated I am happy. However I do not think that the scrollbars will look like the ones in iOS because in my view it doesn't match the interface. I do think the functionality of iOS's scrollbar could be applied to Mac OSX scrollbars.
I hope they release the new Macbooks and that the new Mac OSX release is a big one.

Sorry mate, you're in for a sore disappointment if you don't want the new scroll bars.

Not sure how I feel about this if it were true.

If so, an option in Appearance settings would be nice.

So:

a. You can only see where you are in the page by scrolling or mousing over where the scroll bar should be.
-Seems kind of dumb by trying to fix a non issue

b. Now resize by any corner: Just like Windows! It only took 10 years...

I think the scroll bars need an updated look, but Im not sure I like the idea of scroll bars that hide themselves.

It's a scroll bar people...

Do you have a place to eat, sleep, shower? If you have one of the three, you can get over a SCROLL BAR! My goodness...
