I'm rather neutral about this. I realize there's no "correct" answer as to how to make an operating system UI, so I'm open to a little experimentation, as long as they maintain existing functionality.

Always excited for changes, but I love the aqua scrollbars. I think they're nice. Granted, I'm only a highschooler, I may think differently if I were some kind of executive.

You don't HAVE TO lift your arms every time, but you MAY if appropriate.
You don't have to use shotcuts on the keypad eather, you may use the mouse/trackpad - am I right?
That's correct, but why introduce something that adds significant cost and software complexity to a product if very few are going to use it? Touch-screen input just doesn't make much sense for a large-screen computer.

However, touch-screen input does work for small devices that you hold or for devices like Microsoft's Surface. But as to the latter, we're still a long way off from having an affordable table or desk surface that functions as a touch-sensitive display.

One could point to the articulated, touch-sensitive displays that have been shown in some of Apple's patent applications, but IMO those would still be cumbersome in comparison to a totally flat and horizontal surface (Microsoft's Surface) or something that you could simply hold in your hands (iPad/iPhone). Then there is the issue of desk space, if you go to a horizontal orientation for the display you suddenly need a lot more room, okay for some installations but not for others.

In any case, as I said earlier it wouldn't surprise me if Apple did eventually introduce a Mac that used a touch-sensitive display. It's just that I don't think that it will be a major focus for their Mac product line.

I haven't used a scroll bar since 2-finger scrolling was introduced.
I honestly don't see a need for it anymore

me too, I use it also with Win 7 on the bootcamp,
(sorry but I have to use Win too because not all my internet places work with mac)

Is that torrent of 10.7 on TPB for real!???

To everyone who is complaining that Mac OS is becoming dull and grey, the idea is to focus on the content of whatever you're looking at and not the chrome around it. Considering Steve's focus on minimalism and content, this really shouldn't come as that much of a surprise.

so you like having the sidebar in iTunes be complete gray like it is now? To chose things in it now takes more time than before, why because we are people used to using colors to identify things, not based solely position. When you are driving you have to stop for red or the green light at that short moment when driving and is faster to ID the light color than the position of it in the traffic light. The only thing minimalistic about Steve's focus is that there is not enough instructions for things that are 'hidden features', I had friends that never knew about screenshots in iOS and were mind blown because they didn't know about it and many other things.

Look for a variant of iOS scrollbars in the next Windows release.

My Atari 1040ST has the exact same scroll bars as OSX. It's time for an update!

Maybe they'll go retro and call it the "Platinum Interface." Why not go old school if Apple wants to do monochrome? :D

Personally, I miss the pinstripes and folders with a little more color to them.

would be awful if that happened. This is assuming they are getting rid of the whole "drag and mouse your mouse up and down" functionality.

A step backwards. not opinion but fact.

...I have to stand up and applaud the security team of Mac OS X development. We're less than 24 hrs away from a major debuting OS (according to the hint on the invitation it will be a 10.7 LION preview)...

...and the only rumor we hear are MF scroll bars.

I honestly would love to either:
a) give Aqua a modern and slim refresh
b) let it rot in hell

If those scrollbars become real - great.
Now how about getting Spotlight back to 10.4 features?
How about resolution independence (oh - we heard it all before)?
How about giving ZFS or another filesystem some love?

Honestly - if all we got to discuss about are friggin scrollbars - then JEEBUS, the rumor mill is dry!

A new filesystem is at the top of my list.

I'd also like to see TRUE UI unification. Snow Leopard did a pretty good job with this... and then Apple releases iTunes to a completely different look. Why do they insist on doing that with one of their own flagship pieces of software?

I am indeed curious.

LOL, gotta love the defenders of Apple's monochrome iTunes user interface. Some years ago Windows was bashed by Apple fans for its "dull" and "boring" grey interface. Now it's the best thing since sliced bread. Some would even argue it's innovation!

Bring back Aqua! :apple:

yuck

LOL, wut? Maybe I'm using a different Mac than you, but the Mac interface has been "dull" and "boring" since...1984. It's Microsoft that introduced the Playskool interface that was Windows XP.

Apple has used a monochromatic interface theme since...forever.

At most they are just going to do a limited preview of some of the Mac OS 10.7 features. I suspect that 10.7 won't be released for at least another year. Next year's WWDC in June will probably be the first developer release and it probably won't be available for sale until several months after that.

I'm all for the minimalistic scrollbars. Now that Microsoft has completely cribbed the decade-old glassy look from OS X (they call it "Aero" instead of "Aqua" - see the innovation?), it's time to dump it and move on. Microsoft needs something new to copy for their next Windows revision.

Oh yeah, OS X is moving on... By going back to a colorless grey user interface, like we saw years ago in... Windows 95! Who's copying who again?

(dumb statements deserve dumb replies)

Since I got a Magic Mouse I rarely click the scrollbar anyway.

I'd just like to see some UI consistency in 10.7. Why should scrollbars look different in iTunes than they do in Pages? They shouldn't.

Pick a look, Apple, and go with it. Please.

I'm shocked. I actually agree with you on this one. UI consistency is one of the most important spearheads of good usability. It's baffling that Apple, claiming user experience is the company's top priority, tramples on that elementary principle.
