From what I saw at Macworld earlier this year, resolution independence will probably be part of a .1 increment release to Tiger..I'd be suprised if we waited 2-3 years just to get that. Most of the plumbing for it is already in the OS.

The basic support for this is there, but it's got lots of problems. Even in Cocoa apps only using system provided views (where it's all meant to be automatic and for free) there are rendering glitches. Apple have annonced to developers (last years WWDC: there was an openly available stream with this in it, and I think it's in the docs as well) that this will not be exposed to the users until the OS after Tiger. If you want to play with it now you can. Install the developer tools and run Quartz Debug. You'll see it's not ready yet.

The next in$tallment of Apple'$ O$.

I don't mind an upgrade, but a completely new operating system is getting to be a bit too much. Basically, we are being forced to spend $99 a year for what would otherwise be considered "upgrades", not new operating systems. I made the switch earlier this year and didn't really think much about a new OS becuase I came from the world of Windows, which doesn't really do this very often. Once Longhorn is released, I'm considering making the switch back. The Steve Jobs money machine (the annual $99 OS upgrade payment) is getting old really fast. It is amazing to see how many are already drooling over the next in$tallment of Apple'$ O$.

Sure, some of you will say, Tiger works fine, don't upgrade. That's not the point. Other than the OS, Macs are not very impressive. If they migrate to the PC world with intel, then why bother? Besides, they are going from a tiger to a leopard? The tiger is the largest and most impressive of the big cats. Lion might work, but there is really no comparison between the two. Drop the cat names altogether and go with something new. Give Tiger another year before throwing out another upgrade. Stop all the madness. I can't wait to switch back. I regret my decision to switch and I am probably one of only a few that is willing to admit it. Don't get me started on the compatibility issue with Macs and the rest of the world. Ugggh!!!! Mac has truly killed my inner child (taken from an online parody commercial). Unfortunately, it is true.

You're funny. You know what, just switch back. OS X isn't for everyone and it seems like it definitely isn't for you.

I actually kind of see your point, and won't do what the previous couple of posters have done and basically call you an idiot. What I'd say is this:

The XP to Longhorn transition is looking like being about 5 years. Let's assume that Longhorn's 'Professional' version is going to be about $200, like XP Pro is. In that time, for $260 - a bit more cash, granted, but hear me out - you could have got any two updates of OS X - let's say you had 10.1, and upgraded twice to Jaguar then Tiger. In Tiger you'd have everything Panther had and more, and as long as you were happy with Jaguar, then you wouldn't have missed much with Panther. And in that time you've had a much better OS than XP, which in my eyes is worth $60 over a 5 year period.

Most of the OS X upgrades are only truly essential for the likes of us who are obsessive about our Macs. For most other users, one upgrade every two is more than enough.

All that said, OS X isn't for everyone, and nor is it the be all and end all of OS design. If you don't much like it now, you'd be right to go back to Windows. If it's the upgrade policy you disagree with, I urge you to reconsider.

Wow, 45 replies and nobody's mentioned a special version of 10.5 with Universal Access modifications for the hearing impaired. It will be called. . .
Def Leppard - very droll ;)

Yeah and thanks to people like you and Diatribe we Mac users get labeled as 'smartasses who can't be reasoned with' by everyone else who doesn't use Mac.

ldburroughs, I agree with you somewhat. I don't really like the mini-upgrades, but it's not like anyone is making you pay for them, so I don't mind. Is it a scam? yeah, but only to those who want to have the latest in everything, which is fine. I don't fall into the game because I don't really care about having the latest, just what works. Personally, I wouldn't switch back to Longhorn unless it was that great, and I doubt that it will. In the meantime tho, i'll just stick to Panther until one of the two companies makes something that truly makes makes me think that I will be getting my money's worth. Sure you can get pissed at Apple for trying to make money off it's loyal fans, but i'ts nothing personal, it's just business. ;)

One of the arguements I get from other Apple fans when it comes to the overprice software/hardware coming out fast (such as Tiger and, Tiger) is that 'well, Microsoft does it too!' which is the most ridiculous excuse there is. The way I put it is that there's no excuse to fanatism, I mean, nothing is making me buy the $150 tickets for a Coldplay concert, and I can't justify it, but I still do. :p

Most of us serious Mac nuts like to have the latest stuff, and $129 ($69 edu) isn't all that much money. I mean, for most users, Panther will be fine for at least another year. I also don't see it as Steve trying to Scam us. Sure Tiger isn't as big as he'd like us to think it is, but nonetheless it's a nice improvement for people who enjoy computers and tech stuff.

I'm glad $129 is not that much money for you, because it is for me. And like I said before, I have no problem with people who enjoy the latest computers and tech stuff, just don't expect everyone (myself included) to.

Well, in the absence of any real details, I'm hoping that resolution-independent displays are part of Leopard.

And, of course, now that Macs will be on Intel chips, I look forward to a really kick-@$$ version of Solitaire. ;)

Totally! My dad is a simple user, but he plays solitaire and hearts...a free good normal version for Mac is nonexistant...so far?! Any help on this? Personally, I could care less, but I'm 99% convinced them to get a mini and want to make sure he doesn't it judge it because it doesn't have solitaire.

Not really, there is:
Lion
Lynx
Bobcat
Cougar
Ocelot
Wildcat

and, and of course, there will be OS X House Cat

And don't forget the LIGER, bred for it's skills in Magic, and way better than a Tigon!

Okay.

But also note that just because Apple releases an update, that doesn't suddenly mean your OS is obsolete. No one is making you buy Tiger or the latest revision of any OS.

Solitaire

I bet you can even find hearts or whatever card games you like with that hint!

Im sure if apple was to release updates every 5 years like microsoft does for some it's OS's then we would be complaining about it being to far apart (which it is) so i think we should just be glad apple is still working hard on improving on the OS and not making a bunch of lies about its features.

Oh man, do you read the whole thing or just pick up some words?
I don't really like the mini-upgrades, but it's not like anyone is making you pay for them, so I don't mind.

Anyways, should we expect Apple to kill one of it's themes and try to make everything using one theme? or is it gonna be stripes, brushed metal and the glossy one again? I actually like gloss and brushed metal, but I hate the stripes.

i think apple needs to give the dock a makeover - its awesome and we all have our own ways of modding it and making it unique ...

but what ( like expose ) had hot "sides" or hot parts of a side , so like say , hit the top third of a side and a "dock" like thing pops out with all your documents ( sorted and orginized in whichever way you want ) then another 3rd pops up your apps ! ( would be sooo nice ) and then another 3rd would be your movies folder or somthin ...

you be able to make as many of these little expose-ish tabs where ever you want, and have them contain whatever you specify ( you could even have them linked to smart folders ... smart tabs .. hehe )

ok enough of that ...

in my head this idea is amazing .. anyone else gettin the picture ? no ? yes ?

I read it, but then you basically said how you don't like the updates (because they are a "scam").

Your sarcasm (maybe it's not sarcasm, I duno) makes me wonder what you really would like to see from Apple.

What happens after the cat names are taken? I mean I like them much more than the Longhaul crap. My thinking is to go with Greek Mythology:

Hydra
Minotaur
Centaur
Griffin (?)
Cyclops

I dunno. Whaddya think?

:p

That would be on OS 11... Cat names will stick around for the rest of OS X's life.

Oh that's an awesome idea!
How about heroes rather than creatures?

OS 11.1: Zeus
OS 11.2: Achilles
OS 11.3: Poseidon
OS 11.4: Odysseus

and so on..

The Roman gods / planet names would be fun too. OS X Mars would rock my socks! :)

PS, AFAIK, Zeus and Poseidon are *gods*, whereas Achilles and Odysseus are heroes. ;)

Leopard from Tiger's built in dictionary

leopard |?lep?rd| noun a large, solitary cat that has a yellowish-brown or brown coat with black spots and usually hunts at night, widespread in the forests of Africa and southern Asia. Also called panther.

:D

Cougar=panther=leopard. All are the same cats.
