The Roman gods / planet names would be fun too. OS X Mars would rock my socks! :)

PS, AFAIK, Zeus and Poseidon are *gods*, whereas Achilles and Odysseus are heroes. ;)
How about Athena, Hera, Ceres, Gaia, Aphrodite and Artemis? Manitou? Actually, I think using gods' names is potentially divisive. Not a very good idea. Now, vegetables, that's a different matter. OSXI Carrot?

How about Mac OS XI on the insect theme:

OS XI.0 Bob
OS XI.1 Linda
OS XI.2 Don
etc....

My Wishlist off the top of my head:

- Improve the damn dock. I'm sick of having a trash document wind up ON the dock rather than in the trash.
- Resolution independence. I want to be able to Zoom Out, like i can currently Zoom In. (you guys ARE showing all your PC friends about zooming in, right?)
- Wider-Than-Screen desktops (so there's space to the left and right that you can scroll into. Could replace virtual desktops)
- Icons that can be different sizes and partially represent their content (a word doc would have the "W" on it, but also a thumbnail of it's content)
- Folders that get stamped with an icon, representing it's contents. A folder with an App and a bunch of misc files would have the App's icon on the folder. A folder with a ton of Xcode files would have the Xcode document icon.
- Labels that don't look like a box of skittles, and who's colors are customizable.
- Avoid the BLOAT! It's coming.

Wishlist of existing apps written by non-Apple that Apple could "borrow":
- Virtual Desktops, like Desktop Manager
- Key-based launcher, Quicksilver
- System-wide notifications, like Growl

Forget this cat and Greek god code names... why not go with something much cooler than Greek gods and cats or animals in the same breath... my friends I'm talking about super heroes --

Mac OS XI - Superman
Mac OS XI.2 - Spiderman
Mac OS XI.3 - Aquaman
Mac OS XI.4 - The Thing
Mac OS XI.5 - The Incredible Hulk
Mac OS XI.6 - Batman (true he might not be a super hero but he is a crime fighter)

Okay I feel I've wasted enough server space

How about OS XI, NASCAR Edition:

OS XI.0 Bliss
OS XI.1 Nemecheck
OS XI.2 Rusty
OS XI.3 Intimidator
OS XI.4 Wallace (Mike)
OS XI.5 Busch

P.S., for the record, I can't stand NASCAR, but since I live in Alabama, it's all I hear about.

And then Steve Jobs can have the Mac OS XI Chevy driven by one of the Earnhardt clan.

I don't mind an upgrade, but a completely new operating system is getting to be a bit too much. Basically, we are being forced to spend $99 a year for what would otherwise be considered "upgrades", not new operating systems. I made the switch earlier this year and didn't really think much about a new OS becuase I came from the world of Windows, which doesn't really do this very often. Once Longhorn is released, I'm considering making the switch back. The Steve Jobs money machine (the annual $99 OS upgrade payment) is getting old really fast. It is amazing to see how many are already drooling over the next in$tallment of Apple'$ O$.

Sure, some of you will say, Tiger works fine, don't upgrade. That's not the point. Other than the OS, Macs are not very impressive. If they migrate to the PC world with intel, then why bother? Besides, they are going from a tiger to a leopard? The tiger is the largest and most impressive of the big cats. Lion might work, but there is really no comparison between the two. Drop the cat names altogether and go with something new. Give Tiger another year before throwing out another upgrade. Stop all the madness. I can't wait to switch back. I regret my decision to switch and I am probably one of only a few that is willing to admit it. Don't get me started on the compatibility issue with Macs and the rest of the world. Ugggh!!!! Mac has truly killed my inner child (taken from an online parody commercial). Unfortunately, it is true.
First, they're not exactly coming every year;
secondly, many would be more appreciative of apple's effort to continue to innovate and improve the os and the user experience;
third, if you really think that all the improvements from panther to tiger should/could be delivered in a free upgrade, I have one word: rehab!; finally, i don't exactly think that the species of cat is supposed to be taken as a projection of what the os is supposed to be like, additionally, every cat has its strengths and weaknesses, so...
but, if you really think you'll be happier and better served with longhorn, than go for it, in about a year or two of course, hey, that way you won't have to complain about having to dig into your savings to find $99 'every year'...

I understand a few think about the compatibility issue. But we have to see that Microsoft don't open there source, so it's long to get 100% compatibility with them, Linux suffer the same problem. What are thoses issues by the way? maybe we can help you with that?
But for the upgrade, it's defenitly worth it (I'm a student so I got it at discount price). You may consider asking a student to buy it for you and give him 10$ for the service (make 2 people happy!). Tiger get real revamp under the hood. For normal user, I would say it's not impressive, as a computer ing student, I found it amazing. The potential of Tiger is just warming up. But to user, stay with Panther until something really needed come along to make you make a move to the new OS. So maybe you get X.5 at that time and safe 99$. Sure some software will require Tiger, but that's the new features that you pay for in Tiger. My old iMac 233MHz still do the same job as he did when I bought it, running OS 9 for web surfing in my parent house (100$). I wounder why switching back to longhorn that will be out in end 2006 if everything goes well (they gave up on the files system last years, saying it will be in a update after the release). So thinking about it, I prefer more release at lower price as a user. If I were an IT departement it would be more complicate, but go for one update every two. For the new stuff that came along each years and half now (10.2 and 10.3 come faster cause the system deeply needed it, now the base is more robust) Leopard will be out in end 2006 or maybe a little more . It will make a years and half for it at least.

what about arrange icons by "kind" in colum view or the ability to write to an ntfs disk.
and a timeslider in dvd player along with similar on screen controls that qt7 has.
Ichat should have msn and icq support and tabed chating even with expose' chating in osx can still be a bit of a pain.

Leopard is pretty much their last choice, anyway. Well, besides Lion. And Fishing cat.

What I want to know is -- will they continue spending time optimising for Altivec? I've a feeling it'll not be quite so high on the agenda as will be trying to squeeze a bit more performance out of their generic Intel chips. You know, to differentiate just a little.
Well, I did read a few months back that they had already trademarked Leopard, Lynx and Cougar for future usage. With Leopard gone, we know what the next two versions of OS X are likely to be called.....

Cougar=panther=leopard. All are the same cats.
In many ways you could argue that is like saying all Europeans are the same. The names are not only regional variations of the same part of the feline family, but they can have distinct physical differences too. That would be like saying us Irishmen are in fact the same as the French, Welsh and Scots because we all originate from the same Celtic bloodline. So while the three may be related, saying they are the same, (I am assuming the = refers to exactly the same, although that should be ≡, so I may be mistaken), is incorrect.

ldburroughs, I agree with you somewhat. I don't really like the mini-upgrades, but it's not like anyone is making you pay for them, so I don't mind. Is it a scam? yeah, but only to those who want to have the latest in everything, which is fine. I don't fall into the game because I don't really care about having the latest, just what works. Personally, I wouldn't switch back to Longhorn unless it was that great, and I doubt that it will. In the meantime tho, i'll just stick to Panther until one of the two companies makes something that truly makes makes me think that I will be getting my money's worth. Sure you can get pissed at Apple for trying to make money off it's loyal fans, but i'ts nothing personal, it's just business. ;)

Generally, you don't NEED to upgrade, so if you're happy with Panther, stick with it until you buy your next Mac and you'll get the latest OS (& latest iLife, development tools etc..) with that. There are exceptions to this rule, where it's hard to avoid upgrading your OS if you want/need to use the latest version of iTunes, or Xcode or whatever.

Bear in mind, the rapid upgrades were (at least initially) necessary for Apple. They needed to get it out the front door, and let's face it 10.0 was no more than a beta, 10.1 was little better, so 10.2 was the first release of any quality, IMO. Now, with a stable base and a quality development environment, they can really go to work on new applications and new functionality.

You might think it's great that Microsoft don't release updates as often, but i'm guessing it has more to do with not being able to!!

10.6 could be Sabretooth (Lion is too lame  ) Not the king of the Jungle, but rather the grandfather of all cats :D

Or just pussycat. See how this sweet little thing takes on Longhorn without breaking a sweat.

For planets they could go from the sun outwards (skipping earth :D )
Mercury would be a cool name, but other planet names are kinda lame. OSX URANUS anyone?

Yeah, true, but OS X Neptune would definitely pump NERD in the deck. :D

Aren't Sabretooths extinct? Or is this the future for Apple? :p
As for pussycat -if they're anything like mine they'll pee on the floor when they're not happy - liquid cooling?

Iv never used Tiger (or a mac :p ), but from what iv read, Tiger is like photoshop, its the best program out there for its purpose, perfect, no radical improvments can be made to it, the only updates it will recieve are with progression in technology or making day to day tasks easier (e.g spotlight and bridge)

Ther only thing i can expect in Leopard are:

AV chat, which fully supports Multiple protocols and a larger number of participant in VC

More dynamic widgets, ones which interact with the core of the system or even full blow applications (VNC etc)

Media center capabilities (in the "i" range and mini range)

The phasing out of "classic"

Expose 2.0, this is just my imagination, but i can see different ways of hiding open applications and windows, why do they have to hide the way they do? i think users should have the option to have different affects, e.g windows would "disolve" away or would liquify etc

thats all i can think of at the moment

Really?

I thought Hasbro, who inherited Atari's legacy, might have had something to say about Lynx. *shrug*

That's what I would have thought too, but I think in many ways we will end up with a similar situation to Jaguar, (where the supposed confusion was with the car). We all know it's Jaguar, it even uses the jaguar print on the box, but it can't officially be called Jaguar. I don't think it will even get to that point as few in the mainstream even remember the Atari Lynx.
