Wow, they are already dropping supported models? This means when Applecare is expired, so is your ability to use the newest OS release!

This will not be good for Apple's reputation at all!
Don't expect your 3 year old $2500 computer to be able to run new software in its 4th year.
This means developers will need to make 3 versions of their software; PPC, Snow Leopard and Lion.

I haven't seen an "finally iTunes 64bit!!" comment yet.
How about a "finally, 64 bit Carbon!" comment?!?

I'm guessing 32 bit apps will still be supported, unless they're revamping iTunes to be Cocoa (would be nice, if only to revamp iTunes), it'll still be 32 bit.

I was watching a live stream of Lion last night and when they tried to open up a PPC application it just said it wasn't supported and they didnt direct you to download. Looking pretty grim for Rosetta.

Well, that sucks - guess I'll skip Lion then. Or maybe keep 10.6 and get an additional SSD for my Mac Pro to put it on - that sounds like a good Idea actually...

while i guess promoting newer processors is a good thing, i dont think it should be limited to just c2d.

i have windows 7 going on my old p4.

Recovery partitions are annoying, and needlessly tie up disk space. I've seen some of our faculty purchase Windows laptops where the available space was 30-40 percent smaller than the actual hard drive, all because of the stupid recovery partition. I'd rather have the DVDs.

TRIM... don't particularly care. I hope it doesn't mean they're moving to lower-quality SSDs though.

The one thing I care about regarding Lion is the rumored whole disk encryption - and that hasn't shown up yet. Hopefully that wasn't just something someone pulled out of their... hat.

uh, my 3.5 year old imac will run lion just fine. You have to go back to mid 2006 to find an mac (except mac mini which is 2007) that isn't core 2 duo.

You just can't expect things to be supported with the latest OS forever. Components change, things progress!

Proof you can't please everyone lol. Oh no, 4gb of my 256gb or 500gb drive is gone. The humanity.

Support for the Model-T

Are there many developer who support PPC anymore? For new applications I'm guessing 0% are PPC. For an established application with a user base, maybe 25% of developers still actively support PPC (again, a guess).

I like the thumb-drive solution that comes with the Macbook Airs. I'm have to assume that this will also be an option. With the move to SSD, I'm finding myself with less available storage to waist on an recovery partition.

Pretty pathetic that you would need an Intel Core 2 Duo or better to run it. This is Apple obviously wanting to sell more units. Shame. This is probably one of the contributing factors why my company is now phasing back to PC's.

This is not pathetic at all. Apparently Apple wants to support only computers with 64 Bit CPUs, which seems fair enough. Both Core Solo and Core Duo are 32 Bit. And really old, and not many of them were sold, so it's best to just get over it.

Has this gone against anything Apple has done in the past? Why are you surprised by this in the least? Developing software for current hardware saves time and money. Time to move forward.

Nice to see Apple copying Windows' good ideas.

LOL for all the posts claiming that TRIM wasn't needed.

Not pathetic - smart. All Lion systems will be x64 systems. Developers won't have to worry about the tiny fraction of Intel Apples that are x86-only.

If you look my history of posting, you'll see that I've said

  • Apple should have skipped Yonah (Core and Core Duo) and waited for Merom (Core 2) several months later. I said this before the first Yonah systems were released.
  • I said that Apple should have dropped x86 in Apple OSX 10.6 - and made that release x64-only.

32-bit is dead. Windows Server doesn't support 32-bit, and the next version of Windows client won't support 32-bit. Apple is doing everyone a favor by simplifying Lion.

Yes, it does..

I know windows does; but necessarily a windows idea. ;)
