mine didnt even come in a box. it came in a envelope, those Jiffy Mailing Bags. in it was the booklet, and the disc. thats all. i ordered from apple online store, UTD program. :(

At least your UTD disc arrived. Some of us are still waiting (estimate is Sept 1). Be glad you have the software.

Having issues with up/down three-finger swiping in SL. On 10.5 it worked fine, but on 10.6 a three swipe up or down does nothing in Safari, Firefox or Finder. Cmd + Up or Cmd + Down works fine. :(

Anyone having similar issues, or have any ideas?

Anyone out there using Little Snitch with SL.

I'm having serious Safari and Wireless issues and even after turning Little Snitch (SL beta) off it's still causing problems. Safari/Quicktime is crashing on QuickTime sites a lot (Apple's Trailer site for one).

I have the new LS beta and I had a couple of times yesterday where my wireless stopped receiving data in my library wifi. I had to turn it on and off, but it was no big deal. Maybe you should try the nightly builds?

My impression is that it initially starts out slowly (probably filling caches and Spotlight indexing) and when Snow Leopard gets rolling, it's much smoother than Leopard was. Nothing eye-popping, but very pleasant.

RE: RAID problem update

Update:

Seems it might only be a problem if you do a clean install, not an upgrade. Was speaking at an acquaintance of mine who is an Apple rep, and he suspects it's only an issue if you do a clean install. He nonetheless finds it a bit troubling.

And I was only speaking about Mirrored RAID sets. Can't really comment on the other kinds. Sorry if I didn't make that clear earlier.

I have a 6TB concatenated RAID set, so hopefully I won't have any issues when I upgrade in a few days. That would be pretty crazappy if Snow Leopard didn't recognize the set.

Well it just might be an isolated case with my particular setup.

If there is any way to back up those files, it mignt be a good idea, just in case. I don't mean to scare anyone, but I'm just relaying my own anecdotal info, for what it's worth.

I expect you'll be fine if you're just doing the upgrade and not the clean install.

And one more thing (on a separate issue):

Dear Apple:

Please speed up Mighty Mouse tracking. Even at the highest setting it's quite slow. Steermouse works, but I shouldn't have to use it.

I love the trackpad and the multitouch gesture goodness, but some of us also use our Macbook Pros as full-fledged desktops attached to large displays. Separate keyboard with a mouse, etc.

Plus, this goes without saying for iMac and Mac Pro users. ;)

Everything working as expected!!! :D Things I have tested and seem to be ok but they do NOT run in 64Bit!!

MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz (NOT UNIBODY 2008) I have set to start in 64Bit Mode ONLY!!!!

FinalCut Studio 3.0 (all seem to work fine) NOT 64Bit
Shake 4.1 (INTEL 32bit working)
Modo 203 (INTEL 32bit working)
Adobe Master collection CS4 (INTEL 32bit working)
Combustion 2008 (INTEL 32bit working)
Alias Surface 2010 (INTEL 32bit working)
KineMac 1.6.6 (INTEL 32bit working)
REDAlert (INTEL 32bit working)
REDCine (INTEL 32bit working)
REDrushes (INTEL 32bit working)
AJA data calculator (INTEL 32bit working)

I also noticed that I had 10Gb MORE!!!! disk space!!!!

To add to the list of requested confirmation of app functionality:

Logic Pro 9
Melodyne 3.2.2
Finale 2009, 2010
Pixelmator 1.4.1
Toast Titanium 10
Eye TV 3.1.2
Quick Silver
Crossover 8
Now Contact & Up To Date
AppleWorks 6 (Rosetta)

i actually have seen a decrease in speed. things are very laggy with me. i did a clean install as well...ugh
Same here, while Spotlight was indexing.(approx 1 hr)

SL speed and responsiveness are very impressive overall:

Finder and Spotlight - near instantaneous in reponse - no lag whatsoever.
New Exposé - displays minimized windows - a great refinement.
Dock Exposé - extremely useful when multitasking amongst lots of open apps. Minimizing windows into apps is a great option.
Substitutions - Text replacement via Language & Text - great for converting text into symbols on the fly - also, abbreviations to text à la Typeit4me
Preview - single column select and detection is wonderful
Exchange - flawless, so far
iCal editing - greatly enhanced
Quicktime X - beautiful interface - so far renders VLC unnecessary - nice screen recording functionality
Keyboard Shortcuts - beautifully implemented with hierarchical menus for organization
Wake on Demand - extremely useful - now machine can sleep and still respond as server
On Demand printer drivers
Start up - 30 seconds or less
Shut down - 2 seconds or less
Wake - near instantaneous
Safari - This time, it really is snappier

All this being tested on an iMac 9,1 24" 4Gb RAM, before installing it on the Pros. 64-bit kernel running fine. I did a clean install on one iMac, and an upgrade on another. It seems that the upgrade erases while archiving before installing - the update took approximately 40 minutes (230Gigs) and responds as well as the clean installed iMac. So far, so good!

Yesterday I found a note from FedEx on my doorstop. As I seem to have a job they couldn’t deliver my SN to me in person (Pre-ordered). So today after looking up the named FedEd location on MapQuest I headed out to the location, timing everything so I arrived just after it opened. I was the second one in. *shrug* I got home and installed it immediately. The Counter person said that SL was a Hot Item yesterday.

When I loaded the disk it said “45 Minute Install Time”. Which was quickly changed to 101 minutes. *huh?* I don’t really know how long it took; I was busy catching up on my reading. I have a bunch of periodicals I’ve been neglecting to read. I’m now only two issues behind now.

First thing: One set folders I have set up to see the folders as Icons to show which is which. The next set of folders I like to see in Column formation because there are hundreds of sub-files, over 120 in the larger folders. With Snow Leopard I don’t have to change settings going from folder to sub-folder. It is so nice going from one folder to another without changing viewing settings.

Second thing: When I opened a Flash Drive I noticed a sliding button on the bottom right corner. After a little experimenting I found that it was one of the niftiest goodie yet. I can’t recall it there from Plain Leopard, but I just love the way it adjusts the sizes of file Icons. I’ve had so much trouble in the past getting the Icons just the right size. Now I can adjust the picture files with ease.

Third thing: And this is very critical for me. From when I tell my Mac to wake up until I tell it to go to sleep I have Itunes playing Internet radio nonstop. I may stop when the station hits a commercial or I have to listen to something important, but Itunes plays from start to finish. As I write this I’m listening to Atlantic Sound Factory. I may change channels later on.
After I loaded SN Itunes did not want to work. I’m talking here about me inserting a CD into the drive and just seeing the little ball spin and spin. No music at all. Go to Radio and it was not working at all. After doing Force Quit three times I went back to the Application folder and just plain moved it to the Dock and ignored it. After several uncounted minutes it finally started up without problems. Why did it take so long to start? I almost started this to say that Itunes doesn’t work with SN.

Forth thing: I like the way moving the cursor along the Dock is a dark shadow and not solid anymore.

Fifth thing: This is something of a nuisance, but it bothers me. Like many Mac owners I also have a lot of Jpeg files. And like many I have them numbered .01 through .400, etc. However I like to see my files without the extension. Under construction, OK, let the files say .doc, xls, whatever. But when they’re finished I’d like to see them without the extension. .PDF files can stay .PDF; they’re different. Here they are, HBAR.01 through HBAR.74, all without their .jpg extension. Except for number 13. HBAR.13.jpg just will not become HBAR.13. So to keep it happy I call it HBAR.013. 13 it hates, but 013 is just fine with it. I’ll let somebody else figure that out.

Sixth and Seventh things: I don’t know yet about the Slow Script errors I’ve been having. I’ll be checking that later tonight. Wish me luck. And after getting angry with my current mail server I’m going to see about using Mac Mail utility. I’ve never needed to use it before, I hope I do it right.

As I explore the new system I hope to find better ways to utilize my Mac. I’ve been using the Mac only since March and I just haven’t had the time to become an Expert like so many around here have become.

Are most of you guys doing a clean install, or going over the top of Leopard?

I'm going over the top of Leopard, seemed to work fine on mine yesterday with the downloaded gold master. Used gold master as I was too impatient to wait for today when I had time to go to my local Apple store and buy a family pack. Now installing using DVD on my gf's white Macbook, also upgrade route rather then clean install.

Just picked it up I have not installed it but will soon.

I would like to point out that if you buy it online at best buy it's around $27 w/ tax but if you buy it at the store its $32 w/ tax. Wish I knew that I thought it would be the same price in store.:(

Ehh.... not so sure about all those conclusions....

I read this article and a couple others about the same topic.
Not sure why people are so quick to get upset about this, though? Microsoft had TONS of issues when they first released the 64-bit version of Windows XP. Device drivers weren't available for things, and apps were crashing or not running reliably. Huge mess. Eventually, developers got things re-coded to behave in a 64-bit "world" for them, but most people were already on Vista by the time they were really "ready" to make that switch.

It seems to me that Apple simply did the smart thing, setting the OS up to boot with a 32-bit kernel in any case where they thought the 64-bit one would introduce more problems than it solved in the short-term. It's easy enough for them to release an update that changes the behavior, any time they think it's ready for general use. In the meantime, Snow Leopard still allows 64-bit applications to allocate as much RAM as they need and so forth - so it's an improvement for people whether they boot into the 32-bit kernel or not.

I agree with you that I wasn't too happy to learn that my Radeon 3870 had no OpenCL support ... but I don't know who's to blame there, really? Could be an ATI issue as much as an Apple one? Much older cards than it ARE supported, after all.

Read this article about 64bit OSX : http://www.9to5mac.com/snow-leopard-64-bit-32-bit-firmware-efi

It's another reason why, people like me, with 32bit EFI, might as well wait.... or not buy at all. I took one for the team :D

64bit drivers [Kexts] will slowly be coming out and we get stuck with a 32bit OS, even though we have 64bit processors.

As far as I am concerned, especially with no OpenCL for my 3870, this is another nail in the Apple coffin for me.

I love the OS, I really really do, but the hardware is far too expensive [Mac Pros] and they knowingly cripple them by design. Not a conspiracy theory, read about the Mac Pro history and graphics cards, etc. Also, a current, single CPU [Mac Pro] costs 300 bucks more than my dual processor Xeon of '06. How does that make sense ?

So, I am going to hone my Hackintosh skills [Chameleon/PCEFI ;) ] and see if Windows 7 sucks less than all other Microsoft offerings [I seriously doubt it will suck less but hey, I'm trying here].

Cheers !

Hey -- can anyone confirm that SL spotlight is now indexing shared drives? IE Hard Drives connected to AEBS?

Thanks!

MD

Got it today (well yesterday, but I was at the state fair and fed ex didn't leave it. I was gone today, but I left a note) I'm installing it now. I was surpirsed by how small the packaging is. (will have photos up on flickr in a bit) but shocked at how large the brown box is that had the actual snow leopard box in it. I thought apple was all about going green, and yet they ship a rather large box to ship a box thats less then an ounce. (it can't be for protection, as the disc was hold down by a thin a plastic wrap (like the kind you use for food)

Yeah, it will - if you search from within finder and then select Shared from the menu along the top. It found a few files I had in a drive connected to my AEBS.
