Sheesh, some people - on both sides - need to take a chill pill.

My experience so far (12 hours! hehe) with Snow Leopard has been fine - more like I'd have expected from Apple, based on 10.3.0 and 10.4.0 experiences. But I do remember running into some significant problems with Leopard at first - so we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss those folks that are running into issues.

However based on my own experiences helping people resolve computer problems, I'm certain there are at least a few self-inflicted problems among all the real issues. Not something we can really tell from a forum post.

It is funny that so many people that post on forums seem to have manic-depressive sorts of personalities though. Everything is either perfume and flowers, or else it's a steaming pile of ***** - there's no in between. :D

Whatever
Apple brags about not being buggy, but this upgrade is LOADED with bugs. They're no better than Windows ME with this DOWNgrade.

I WANT MY MONEY BACK AND I WILL CALL APPLE AND DEMAND A FIX!!!

I should have pirated this instead.

You just get done saying it's buggy as hell and you hate it yet you are scum enough to pirate it. You have no one to blame but your own sorry self for not checking to see if the programs you "have to have working" worked before doing the update.

I lol'd

NO, you haven't gained that much. SL reads total drive space differently... your drive shows full size now. Whereas before may have showed 230 GB of 250 GB drive once formated. Now, shows 250 GB of 250 GB drive.

The reason everyone keeps reporting far more space than 7 GB is how SL is reading their drive's space. Bigger the drive, the more space you will supposedly "gain."

In the end, you're only gaining 7 GB. The rest is all how the drive is read.

I kinda follow that - but still not quite sure.

Under Leopard, when it reported 78GB free, was there actually more than that free?

Here's a quicky.

I use the original Macbook (1.83Ghz 1Gb RAM) mostly for light browsing and Handbrake. Am I likely to get a significant difference in performance compared to Leopard?

Here's an idea with the mimimising into the Dock icon thing.

And one that only struck me, as I think I thought it actually did do that.

But when you have Safari open, with multiple tabs, and you've minimised it out of the way.

It would be useful if, when you CTRL click on the Safari icon, it listed the current page of all the open tabs, not just the one with the focus.

That's what I thought it was doing, with the little grey diamond to indicate the tab with the current focus.

But I've tried to replicate it, and can't, so assume I imagined it!

Flash in Safari crashes often, especially if you're doing something intensive in the background.

Moving files around is a bit slow.

Video playback stutters in VLC if Safari is downloading a heavy webpage.

Really needs an update quickly.

I should have waited. Now I'll have to work on Maya on my laptop until 3rd party developers catch up. PLUS I cannot install anything. I wish I could sue Apple right about now. I am so angry!

This is funny! Seriously, who upgrades without doing a total system backup first?! If you have critical applications or files that can be affected by ANY system upgrade or update, then you back up first. It's so simple that it's stupid. I have a complete backup of my system that I made just BEFORE doing the upgrade. This way, if I'm like you and have trouble, all I gotta do is fire up Superduper! or go back one version on Time Machine to get where I was BEFORE doing the installation. Then I decide to try a complete system reinstall for SL, including applications, or just throw the disks on the shelf and wait for the update.

So, due to your total disregard of doing a backup and restore, you feel intitled to sue Apple? That's just silly. If you had done as I said above, you'd only be out $30 and some time. And don't tell me you can't afford a backup drive! If you can afford Maya, you can afford a cheap firewire drive. There is no excuse for you to be mad at anyone but yourself.

And who on earth would install a new OS version 90% the way through a download that had taken two weeks?

Hilarious!

:D

Wow you're annoying. This post is useless it literally everyone who reads it. Thanks!

We're here to discuss 10.6 and be happy about its arrival. Go away please.

Mate, I've been a life long opponent of the death penalty but I sometimes wonder, in the light of some of the stupidity displayed by some here with the inane questions that have been answered multiple times, whether I should revisit my moral opposition to the said death penalty.

Just scan through and look for the usual suspects asking the same stupid questions already answered in previous posts; unless they're lazy or living under a rock (or both), they should know the answer already.

To those complaining about issues: I'll repeat whilst doing high kicks with a pair of pom-poms: "Clean install, clean install, clean install, clean install! you hear me yet?! CLEAN INSTALL! I pitty a fool who don't do a clean install!"

Install on ext. drive

Hey all,

First post here, long time lurker.

Got a couple of questions about installing SL on an ext. drive and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got 10.5 on my main internal HD and an ext. FW drive. I want to leave 10.5 as it is and put SL on the external. Apologies if these questions are obvious, just never dual-booted OS X before.

Will I have any issues doing this?

With SL on the external, I won't cause any harm to the data when I shut down the Mac without ejecting the disk?

Will Spotlight on each install interfere with the others and cause any problems with each respective database?

I've got a .Mac/MobileMe account and from what I can see syncing on the Mac is tied to the computer name. Am I right in thinking if I want my .Mac account synced on Sl I just need to use a different computer name?

Again, any help much appreciated.

Mine also shows 64 bit kernel and extensions as "NO" Tried the "4" and "6" on booting and it didn't work, then tried editing the file you mentioned and osx wont let me save it. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Please, for the love of Krisha, read the forum - it has been covered NUMEROUS times and shouldn't need to be covered for the trillion and one time. All computers load by default with 32bit kernel except for XServe; only select (Pro Range + iMac) can load with 64bit kernel when forced.

No - I still don't worry about viruses and now I don't have to deal with Outlook or Entourage...

You'll realize one day that no OS is immune to viruses.

Oh - and my User folder goes to a real folder location on my drive - not some made up "library" virtual folder that the OS has to have overhead maintaining and forces the user into instead of the smart folder OSX has had since 10.4.

Actually Windows has a real User folder. You're talking about Libraries and complaining that they are virtual folders? :D

Poor windoze user - is it that bad that you just need to have something to do with a Mac so you post here?

Look -- this is getting childish. It seems you are so insecure about your choice that you have to insult a Windows user.

And yes, I'm a Mac user.

I don't even USE MS. Do you work for Apple??

I trust-ED and love-ED Apple. I just tried to convince someone to BUY one. I have convinced MANY people to buy the iPhone over the years -- even at $600 when they were released. I am a HUGE Apple supporter. I have two Apple computers, ONE without SL, and it'll stay that way.

I have always upgraded my Apple products without a problem. They boast superiority and low maintenance in their ads, do they not? Yet they release this Snow Garbage, it's buggy as heck, and the trusting, supportive consumer is blamed for not scouring through a list of apps that don't work on it. I actually DID search for reviews, but found no such list. Now that I saw the list, my apps are NOT listed. On Twitter, the Maya issus IS noted, so I should have waited. I am angry at myself for TRUSTING Apple to continue its excellent line of products. Now I see that theyr'e not much different than Windoze. I expected more, and unless I can revert back to OS 10.5, I'm screwed and will have to use Maya on a laptop.

If people don't understand my anger and want to attack, fugg 'em. I don't give a crap.

Please take the Bill Hicks advice to heart:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDW_Hj2K0wo

You created your own personal hell; its neither forums, Apple's or Maya's fault that you couldn't even do something as simple as backing up your system, formatting your hard disk then installing an operating system.

Only played with it for a few hours, on the MacBook Pro. Things seem to load much faster than before. Overall I would say for the price I would definitely upgrade.

Some applications dont port properly using the Migration Assistant. For some reason I had to completely reinstall CS4 cause it would stop loading, but after reinstallation and updates that side works fine. iStat don't work, but they are working on it.

Safari tends to give me the beachball of death alot though... Finder is speedier at moving files around and showing me new windows, and the new Expose is great. Love how they equal the windows and show the blue border, better for me to focus on what I want to see.

But I have to say, you're stupid if you don't do a backup... backup backup backup and then do the clean install, transfer everything over, check incompatibilities, and then you will enjoy your SL install just like I am currently enjoying.

Got it this morning around 11 AM from FedEx.
Took 45 minutes to upgrade in place, no issues what so ever.

However it comes up as 32 bit kernel and not 64 bit kernel by default.

I have a MBP Unibody 5,1 system

If I hold 6 and 4 during the boot process it comes up as 64 bit, and seems to run fine.

If I reboot and do not hold the 6 and 4 key it goes back to 32 bit kernel. Not sure why it defaults to 32 bit.

Anyone knows why Apple would default it to 32 instead of 64?
Anyone knows how to make it default to 64?
Anyone knows if switching between GPU, does it still require to logout?
Can SL now use both GPU's to speed things up?

Any input appreciated
Thanks

How much RAM do you have?

Hi all,

First post... Just a few comments.

SL Install was nice and simple, after using for a few hours it feels nice and smooth, pretty much as described :)

Two small things i've noticed, not sure if they're worthy a mention however;
Now when turning off the display via CTRL+SHIFT+Eject it will lock your desktop which is cool.
Also when dragging a file/folder in list view with heaps of files, it will gradually speed up which is better than 10.5.

What are peoples thoughts on the lack of preferences in Quicktime? I used to be able to CMD+F fullscreen to my secondary (LCD TV)... Not sure how to do it now. Cheers.

64 bit on white macbook

hi, will snow leopard work at 64 bit on my early 2008 white macbook? it has a intel core 2 duo 2.4 that supports 64 bit. but im not sure about it, cause i dont know if it is possible to check.

Ha ha... well, I first installed SL on a freshly wiped MBP and it upgraded pretty nicely in 45 minutes sans issues. So, I dared myself to install it on my new iMac (to which I'd just transferred all my stuff from my MBP) WITHOUT A BACKUP. It installed on the iMAC IN 15 MINUTES!! and no problems whatsoever. All my software works, all my info and settings in tact. :D:D So I won the dare, but I don't advise anyone not to backup critical info first.
