For those wondering why SL defaults to 32-bit mode, over on the Apple forums some senior posters were saying that the only real benefit would be to those who have >= 8GB of ram installed, and the reason they chose to default to 32-bit was to ensure compatibility with drivers (64 bit requires entirely new drivers).

Another thing that was mentioned was that even in 32-bit mode, you can run applications in 64-bit mode, so there doesn't seem like a lot of need to run in 64 bit. Here's the thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130976&start=0&tstart=0

Apparently it doesn't matter to me because I have a 32-bit EFI, so I'll be unable to run the 64bit kernel.

As I posted above, I'm generally happy with SL.

But out of interest, in layman's terms, what is the deal with 64bit then?

It was touted as one of the big gains of SL, yet that suggests its effectively meaningless to a big proportion of Mac users?

Finder is the New Finder!!!

1) Upgraded my macbook with out any issues, generally faster
2) iPhoto definitely faster btw, i am running iLife 06 (iLife 09 may be more optimized)
3) Finder races (very responsive)
4) CS and Office X are running fine (First asked to install rosetta, after that it works fine)
5) Lots of small tweaks
6) it says my battery needs service!!! (yep, it is three years old, bought sept 2006, just missed the Core 2 Duo version)

with 32bit CPU, and just 2GB RAM, i do see performance improvement

No freebies (T-shirts etc.) from the Sheffield store. I had a Genius Bar appointment (hard drive swap) at 0945, so I asked just before opening.

This was the queue there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30895918@N03/sets/72157622043482951/

Finders is stunningly quick, especially for network shares. I still have a bug where Safari causes the display to freeze intermittently (can move the mouse, beach-balls, but nothing else). I also had this with Leopard, any ideas?

Purchased from Regent Street London Apple Store at about 11am UK time. Was surprised how low key the release was - no fanfare or posters. But that made for a simple, quick transaction.

Delighted - easy, seamless update over Leopard.

Everything snappier - new Quicktime is great - gained over 10gig HDD space.

Really it's the speed bump I'm paying for. Good job, Apple.

Pah, Walked like a zombie to the retail store and got my disk.

my 2008 Black Macbook with 500GB disk and 4GB ram won't upgrade. :(

Some time ago I replaced the 160GB disk with a new 500GB disk. I used super duper to move the internal disk onto the bigger drive whilst it was in a caddy and then ploped it into the machine - hey presto.

Snow Leopard won't let me pick the internal drive to install as its says its using the apple partition scheme instead of GUID scheme for some reason.

So my only option is to super duper onto another disk which i'd need to buy (my time machine is on a win 2300 server share - don't think you can restore from network locations on installation ?) and then reformat the internal disk making sure it has the GUID-style table and then super duper back from the external disk.

That kinda sucks and I don't have the time to deal with this kind of stuff at the moment.

It didn't 'just work' LOL my first complaint in 2 years after starting using Apple kit so not too bad I guess.

Anyone know a non-destructive way of switching partition schemes ? iPartition can do it but only on the non booted disk :(

Sorry this happened man - I think for future reference you can format the disk as GUID partition and then just tell Super duper to clone the drive but NOT erase it.

If iPartition can fix it if it's not the boot volume then you should put it in target disk mode and then modify the drive from another Mac. - Back up your data if you try that!!!

The most safe thing to do is probably just make a time machine backup of your install - do an erase and install of 10.6 and then restore from the TM backup after the install is finished...

I've now installed Snow Leopard on both of my machines and I like it.

I did not do an erase and install, I just upgraded and I got back 22 gb of space back on my 7,1 iMac and 13 gb of space back on my 5,1 MacBook. Apple said on their website that I would get back 7GB but I got more back. good.

Even after having installed Boot Camp 3.0 I still have an annoying Problem with my (2.4Ghz Late 2008) MacBook. The backlit Keyboard always turn on by itself.

Any suggestions?

Grr

I ordered the UTD disk earlier this week and Apple said it would ship via FedEx BY today, but it still hasn't been shipped. I am a hardcore fan, but I was very disappointed in Apple for this.

So it seems for OpenCL as well.

Received mine about and hour ago from FedEx and just got finished installing. FedEx guy told me that Apple sent out over 200,000 copies last night.

Between the recalculations of GB's and SL itself I gained 21GB in HD space. And it is very snappy!!

Yikes!

After install, all of my Mail messages have become invisible in the list view. I've tried a restart and that hasn't helped. Has there been any other reports of this issue?

It's such a shame that your computer is useless until SL arrives. I can't believe that my computer still worked after midnight.

You know, it might still ship today- the day isn't over.

Does anyone else think the screen is more vivid/brighter with SL installed?

2400xt

I've pre-ordered mine, but still waiting on royal ail (was waiting patiently for the post man today but he came empty handed:(). Was wondering if anybody has installed on a first gen alu iMac with the 2400XT and if any improvements could be seen.

I know Open CL is not supported at the moment, but hoping that it will be soon, since the Graphics have only been recently upgraded......

Probably because your screen has reverted back to a default calibration.

Anyone else have the problem of their internal boot drive not showing up on the desktop? For some reason in Finder prefs, the "show hard drives" wasn't checked.

For those that want 64 bit kernel by Default

Apple has a knowledge base that states to use the following command in a terminal to switch to 64 bit kernel:

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

So assuming that the 6+4 works for you, start a terminal and use the above command.

Ordered in July: Not Shipped

For those that are upset they ordered this week and didn't get it today, realize there are a lot of people in far worse shape. Many many people went to the trouble of ordering through the up to date program in advance, and don't even have a ship date. I ordered 7/29 and have no ship date as an example.:mad:Personally I think Apple should have fulfilled the orders in strict date order no matter what the source of the order (Apple Store, Up to Date...etc).

I'd like to hear from someone who can finally answer the question as to which apple shipped GPU's are actually 'capable' of OpenCL computing. That would shed some light on wether currently unsupported GPU's have a chance at all to be later supported. Thanks in advance for anyone technical and positive enough to know this answer for certain. BTW I'm one of the hopeful ones that my less than one year old Radeon HD 2600 Pro may be supported in the future as I have heard many theories that result in 'maybe', 'possibly' and 'doubtful'.
