When installing do you need to enter a serial number or is the install the same as with panther?

Thanks,

J

No serial number is needed. Don't download a pirated copy. There have been reports of what seems like purposeful seeds of bad copies of Tiger that will ruin your Mac.

Thanks for the quick reply.

To ease your concience, I was not planning on downloading a pirated copy. I was simply wondering about the install procedure.

Long live Apple

J :)

Dashboard Questions...

Is anyone else getting reallllllly slow translation in the Dashboard Translation Widget?

And where is that eBay widget Steve demo'd during the keynote?

I put 10.4 on my Powerbook. If anyone wondered the 9600 Mobility does the "ripple" effect on dashboard.

My wife just purchased Tiger at the "Tiger World Premiere," got among the first copies there. She plans on making sure that she has her Powerbook backed up on her external Flash HD first.

Got my copy, updated, went off fine. Here are the current issues I'm having, just for the info:

1 - Spotlight isn't finding EVERYTHING on the drive. sometimes spotlight wont even find a file that's on the desk top

2 - two of the last ten shutdown/restarts have frozen/crashed and required manually shutting down

3 - quicktime's integration into safari has become extremely laggy. as a quicktime just begins to load into a safari window, THE ENTIRE OS laggs considerably, almost bringing usage to a stop

4 - live scaling for quicktime 7 does NOT work with all movie formats

5 - widgets sometimes do not remember they're placement on the dashboard, requiring you to reposition them after restarts

6 - automator is somewhat clumsy, and the "add spotlight comments to finder items" automation task doesnt appear to be working for me

For concern 1, Spotlight may still be indexing the drive, which could take a while.

For concern 2, why have you restarted ten times?

I am another who preordered on the 12th and isn't getting it until Monday. That is B.S.

They shipped it, according to Fed Ex, on April 28. They SHOULD HAVE (and I believe, have in the past) upgraded to overnight shipping to fulfill their delivery promise. But they stuck with 2-day shipping. I live in NYC, and it is only in bloody PA. USPS Priority Mail would have gotten it here in one day. Hell, horse and buggy could have gotten it here in one day.

My gym is near the SoHo store... if I knew Apple would lie, I would have dealt with the crowds and picked one up in person.

Lame.

That said, I am still excited about getting it :)

I am also in this situation. Mine is sitting in Newark at the moment.

For anyone in this situation, call Apple and complain. They will offer you a free copy of iLife, or iWork, or a $30 credit on your next purchase. Make apple pay for their mistake! :)

Who did you hear that from. Here is the problems I've had with them. Called at 4:30, said we are doing everything we can to insure arrival today if it doesn't arrive you will be compensated. Call back if you don't have it at 6:30pm. I called back at 6:30pm was told to call back at 8pm and was told that it was Fedex's fault because Apple shipped too many products on the same day (every preorder was shipped to Fedex's hubs on the same day) so there wasn't enough room on the trucks to get all the copies out. I asked about compensation and was first told that there is nothing they will do because it is a Fedex problem and finally the guy told me to call back tomorrow after 2pm CST to find out what they will do, the compensation will be based on the number of people who didn't get it on time. Why can't these people just tell me the truth.

I agree, everyone who didn't get Tiger today should call and complain. Last time I checked when you guarantee something and then don't fulfill it that's false advertising or fraud which I'm pretty sure is illegal in this country.

I guess I'll be doing that tomorrow I guess. :(

First I was confused, then I was angry, then sad, then frustrated, and now I am just down in the dumps. No suicide watch needed here, but I am just a little depressed.

Everyone is off using Tiger, even some of the people who are still stuck in Newark went out and got it tonight regardless.

Very disappointing. :(

I have iLife 05, I couldn't give a crap about iWork since I have Office 2004. I don't want a $30 credit on my next purchase since I won't be buying anything at the online Apple store again until hell freezes over. What they can offer me is free return shipping on my order since I went out and bought a copy today and a $30 credit on my credit card. That will make me happy, yet for some reason I don't think they're going to like that request.

Yeah i have both iLife and iWork, and the $30 credit...

"We can offer you a $30 credit on your next purchase for your inconvenience."

"You know what, why don't you keep that and on the chance that I ever do order anything from your delay-ridden online store again, throw that money at trying to get it shipped on time. Thanks."

Sleepless in Seattle....Tigerless in New York.

Mine is still "Preparing Shipment" what’s up with that??

Apple sent it out 4/28, by 2 day FedEx! You would think they could do the math. Since FedEx does not deliver 2nd day on Sat, I am waiting until Monday. I ordered it 4/12, the day it was first available. To top it all off, I phoned Apple twice asking about the shipment info, and they said twice that the FedEx tracking info was wrong, and that the package would arrive 4/29. It is now 4/30 and no Tiger. VERY DISAPPOINTING! The worst part- I was at the Apple store watching people buy it off the shelf. Why did I bother to use the online store?

Like I've said before, Apple claimed that all preorders shipped together so it didn't matter what day you ordered. Some people got lucky. It sounded like Fedex was just grabbing random packages and throwing them on random trucks for shipments. If 1/4 million copies (or however many preorders there were) all arrived to Fedex at once they would not know which copy was ordered when. Very bad planning on Apple's part.

Don't mean to be a troll, but....

Even if you get Tiger tomorrow or monday, you will still be ahead of any other Windoze user by about a decade ... is it really worth stressing out about a delayed shipment, or running out and buying a copy risking the fact that Apple doesn't have to take your original order back? Next time I may wait for all the people who simply couldn't wait a second longer for their shipment, and who went out to buy it instead, to put their "extra" copy on Ebay at a steep discount.

Apple knows that people are willing to pay for their product, so why would they take returns on something that has free shipping? Was it guaranteed? No. Once you get it on your Mac, you'll be claiming it's the best OS ever. that's all Apple wants. They already have your money. Besides, it was free shipping anyway. They can't guarantee that FedEx delivers on time. So maybe instead of Apple, people shoudl take issue with FedEx. It's only widgets and spotlight, for crying out loud. Spotlight is awesome, but it is't worth getting so mad over. Lighten up, people.

By the way, 10.4 broke my Cisco VPN client, too.

You're missing the point. Apple promised delivery by today, in fact it still says it on there recording when you call customer service, and failed to come through on it. Many of us would have done whatever it took to get a copy today, for me it would have meant driving an hour and a half to the closest Apple store, but we trusted Apple, and were untimately let down. It's not so much the fact that I can't live without dashboard or spotlight a few days, it's just I was promised something that I was excited about since the day they previewed it, and Apple couldn't follow through. This was completely there mistake, I ordered April 13th, I would be more understanding if Fedex lost package or fudged the delivery.

Jesus, what a let down... those bastards!

Sorry to hear people didn't get their copies on time. Just thought I'd throw in some positive here. Apple shipped my copy on the 27th and I got it as promised today, the 29th. Installing as I type this.

Yep, same issue with translations. For supposedly "light weight" mini-apps, some of those widgets feel pretty heavy weight. Scrolling text on widgets that provide scrollable text, like the dictionary and yellow page widgets seems kind of labored for a seemingly small amount of text, all in all. Some functions are just plain slow. Try clicking the "i" button (to flip a widget to access it's prefs) on the iTunes controller and watch it as it decides when a good time would be for it to turn around.

The eBay widget looks to be vaporware so far, but Apple seems to be regularly updating it's 3rd party widget page, so maybe it will materialize after all.

I'm very sorry to hear about the shipments of those that posted above. Certainly hope that you will be able to work the problem our to your satisfaction. The most important thing to do when calling is to be polite. Just be sure to state the facts.

I ordered Tiger from Amazon, along with some music CDs in the same order. (Yes, I still sometimes buy some music in "hardcopy" format.)

I made sure to specify "Group my items into as few shipments as possible" to get the Super Saver Shipping. I have had an estimated delivery date of May 5th for all items for a week or two. Today the status changed. My order has been divided in two, with Tiger still saying "not yet shipped, estimated delivery date May 5th" and the CDs saying "shipped April 29, estimated delivery May 5th".

The delivery dates are the same day, but I'm guessing they ship software and audio CDs from different locations so they split the order for their own purposes. Now I'll see which package wins the race.

I too am like the many who won’t receive Tiger until Monday. I woke up Friday morning to an email saying that Apple was unable to ship my order in time. They did get it out late Thursday night. I spent all day yesterday (Friday) refreshing FedEx’s site hoping to see it delivered even though it had an estimated delivery date of 5/2. I’ve seen FedEx deliver earlier than their estimate.

I soon realized that it wasn’t going to be delivered until Monday. At first I was angry. But I eventually calmed down. Working in the industry that I do, I understand that crap sometimes just happens that you can’t control. So I too called and complained and let them know that I was upset. I didn’t yell and scream at the Apple rep on phone. I know they had nothing to do with the situation and yelling only makes the situation worse. They were willing to make it up to me. They offered iLife and iWork as compensation. I took iWork since I already have iLife.

I’m still upset that Tiger won’t get here until Monday. But at least Apple offered to compensate me and that has helped soothe the pain. If they didn’t offer to do that, then I would be yelling and screaming. And I’ll order from the Apple Store again. Every other order I have made there has gone smoothly.

Thanks TNT!

i received this email from Apple today. anybody got the same one? unable to reach my address?! i was at home waiting for them. don't tell me TNT can't find my address.
