Mac Pro 8800gt Are Shipping!

I called Apple, and they agreed to expedite the shipping for no charges! I should get it on the 29th of february instead of the 6th of march...

Great start!

what are you saying to apple to get them to expedite the shipping? i want my shipping upgraded!

Just curious,,, you guys who are getting money back and shipping enhancements, is it because your promised ship date has passed by,,, or is it just Apple being a good company, appeasing it's customers, even when they've yet to fall short on doing/providing what they said they would?

They are doing it because they have shipped orders for people who ordered after people who are still waiting for their orders to ship. Most people consider that unfair, and apparently Apple agrees.

Oh gawd... Z here...

My last name starts with Z as well! That's what made me suspicious in the first place.

I can see the frustration here...

I ordered on the day of release, my machine still hasn't shipped, and now people are getting discounts just for complaining...I'm almost tempted to call Apple myself. If anything, the "first come first serve" line is just annoying at this point because it's obviously not true.

To be honest, as my first ever mac purchase, I think the way the whole thing was handled was crappy. Granted, I knew I was in for a wait, but perhaps an e-mail after the three week mark explaining WHY I was waiting. To this day, no one is really sure...was it supply issues? Incompatibly? Etc.

You know what would be funny... if all those people getting "upgraded" to 2-day shipping (or faster) have Apple actually ship on their projected ship date as a result, rather than shipping now, or whenever the system was ready. That'd teach em! :)

No, mine has not shipped yet... 01/21 order with ADC Discount... ship date projected of Feb 27, arrival March 4th. I can show patience however, Apple has put a charge through on my card so I'm sure they'll get it out in due time.

I phoned Apple as well and spoke to a very nice rep. My order was placed Jan.10. She said the delay was the 8800GT. I said others with the same video card had already shipped. She then said, just watch the order status frequently, and when I said I'd have to wait an additional 12 days for shipping, she offered free expedited 2-3 day shipping. I'm a bit happier, but still waiting.

It's because Apple insists on flashing the video cards with special firmware which is entirely unnecessary from a technical perspective. They don't want people to be able to buy any particular video card and run it in a Mac. This delayed everything significantly.

Does it really matter? The ideas that it had to do with 10.5.2 haven't panned out. It may have been a driver issue, but that seems unlikely to me. Apple is apparently shipping large numbers of 8800GT systems, and the 8800GT has been in somewhat constrained supply on the general market. Given that Apple at one point had an ATI card spec'd as the midrange for this model, it's reasonable to assume that the 8800GT was a late addition to the line-up. Apple likely wasn't able to get large quantities of the cards until now.

I've never had a company explain their supply-chain issues to me as an individual consumer.

I'd have rather had my new system a month ago, too. But I knew the wait when I placed the order.

In all seriousness, I understand MikeL's perspective and respect the difference in our opinions. Let's get back on topic, stop bickering, and focus on what is important: Getting our new Mac Pros! :D

Agreed. Stay on topic, people.

Excellent news. I'm sure everyone will be getting confirmations soon.

I wonder what this means for people like me who ordered the kits?

I ordered mine on 1/10, and my ship date is 3/3. I'm fine with waiting, as this computer is already insanely fast. Just curious.

Impressive of APPLE, I think. Many Corps. would not compensate for promises/obligations yet to not be met. Thumbs up :apple:. Wonder what stockholders think of such liberal practices,,, with stock this morning hitting 118 from a recent high near 200?

Obviously I'm jesting. I doubt either of us are particularly angry. That said, I do think complaining about people who ordered after you receiving their computers before you is perfectly justifiable, and it is entirely appropriate for Apple to grant or deny discounts/shipping improvements as they see fit.

Near as I can tell, nobody has received anything other than a shipping notice at this moment. That'll change today.

There are obviously factors that play into this beyond order date/config. I guess I'm just loathe to complain until some promise made to me has been broken. I was never promised a particular place in line--I was just promised a computer by a particular date.

Then again, I'm not as keyed up about a new computer as some people are. I'm looking forward to it, but it's not something I'd lose any sleep over. To me it's just another tool. An incredibly cool tool, but a tool none the less. A day or two this way or that way isn't going to change it.

I probably get more new computers than most people, so to me it's work. Getting a new machine set up isn't fun. It's not an exciting experience. That particular thrill passed a long time ago. Now it's just a matter of getting back to my normal workflow, and then seeing what the new computer will let me do to improve it.

Mine shows up on the 12th, which will be a full day. Court in the morning, office work in the afternoon, and a class in the evening. I'll likely have to wait until the 13th to get the computer delivered, and there's V-day preparations to make. So the G5 that it's replacing will have to hold down the fort for a little bit longer.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'll stay up all night on the 13th. :D

I ordered ADC too. Still on original time schedule. I'm thinking ADC buyers probably are not at the top of the list for ship time upgrades.

I really doubt that flashing cards delayed things--all EPROMs have to be flashed, no matter what is written to them.

Your reasoning is analogous to saying that Apple had to spend extra time reformatting the drives because Apple doesn't use Windows. Much like EPROMs, drives are empty to begin with.

Yeah, there may be hope though because Chase informed me that the Apple charge for the machine has cleared today. I can't imagine they'd charge now for a Feb 27 ship date =)

Ok, so what's your last initial? :D

I wonder if it has to do with alphabetical order? Anyone care to post their last initial?

I have it from a reliable source that it's actually based on the purchaser's height to weight ratio. My ratio is very low so my MP will ship much later.

Yikes (And I'm scheduled for the 22nd) Better hurry up and make up my dang mind on which hard drives I'm going to buy
