"The Mac Pro lineup has not gained any refreshed or updated hardware -- all that's changed is configuration and price. The machines continue to use Ivy Bridge E Xeon processors, dual AMD FirePro GPUs, and Thunderbolt 2."

Can't innovate anymore, my ass!

will not buy another mac. next standard should be 1TB ssd and OLED display. Otherwise there is no point and will keep what I have.

These prices are still a joke. These units are almost 5 years old. 5 years later and theyre just now trying to tell the pro-users we still care for you. Give me a break. If you can update the MBP line up year after year. You can certainly do something for the desktop side.

What's the problem?

  • There's no guarantee that it won't stop all stop working at the next minor MacOS patch.
  • The graphics drivers are marked as "experimental" and "unsupported" by NVidia. The drivers for Sierra only came out a couple of weeks ago, and even then they only support the 900 series cards - no suggestion if they'll ever support the 1000 series (and the 900s, at least where I live, are like hens teeth now, so its a case of grubbing around on eBay).
  • Oh, and, technically you're breaching Apple's software license, and while they're unlikely to bother suing private hobbyists its not a risk that any sensible company would take.

Kudos for the people who've made building a hackintosh as easy as it is, but if you're using one for anything other than personal/hobby use or bragging rights you're holding it wrong.

Overpriced? Extremely
Really? The processor ALONE is still going for $1,500 average.

Sure you can find used ones cheaper. There is even one for $99. But on average you are looking at $1,500 for just the processor alone.

I know graphics professionals using Hackintoshes. The machines they built are reliable and cheaper.

So, can you mention any company names that are using hackintoshes and not individuals?

Except that they do; it's a one day setup, if that.

Can you mention some company names that are buying hackingtoshes or are buying parts and assembling themselves?

My bet is that very few companies do that except for single-employee companies.

I can but they are a client of mine and I don't really feel at liberty to trot their information out on Macrumors. Probably nothing would happen but not really good business on my part.

I get it. Some guys are running $1000 "X" SKU processors in their editing and gaming rigs. Some guys are running $1200 Titan X cards. But Im sorry, no computer that sits on anyones desk should retail for almost $10k (and yes I understand that was the old price). Even a custom built, custom water cooled, spec'd out PC runs roughly $6k.

The difference being the PC runs this years tech. Not 2012's....

I know it's not that bad, if you buy exactly the right mobo and peripherals; but real pro organizations don't do white-box computers. Never have. Never will. Not worth the money that can be made up in a few hours of billable work.

I never said companies or organizations.

a lot of you folks did not read the earlier article and are acting like this is the final mac solution from apple. They have stated they are working on a significaant update to the mac pro but did adjustments to the current build configs for short term. I would say no new mac pro this year outside this config update but look for next year for a big jump.

I'm exceedingly happy, they seem to be listening to their high end users on all this (mainly bringing a re-designed Pro next year and a high end iMac later this year). But this is a good thing till then. Crazy how expensive it still is for such old hardware...but it's alot better than before.

I've put aside my plans to migrate over to Microsoft's data mining arms (due to lack of suitable Mac hardware and no expectation of any in the future) - this all makes me very happy.

If you read the source articles, you'll see that they actually did this, on the record during the interviews for these announcements. I was very close to selling my old 12 Pro and going PC. Makes me very happy to be off that track now.

Yes, I found this segment from that article encouraging (and a counterargument to the doom and gloomers in this thread):
"
My takeaway is that the Mac’s future is bright. Mac sales were up in 2016, once again outpacing the PC industry as a whole, and the new MacBook Pros are a hit, with sales up “about 20 percent” year over year. The Mac is a $25 billion business for Apple annually, and according to the company there are 100 million people in the active Mac user base worldwide.

So is the 6-core at $3,000 a good deal? Is it a decent processor?

I only ask because it's a chip that was released in Q3 2013... which is approaching 4 years old.

Apple is looking for a REASON to kill the mac.

They have made it obvious that they do not want the mac in their lineups.

By not upgrading it; sales go down; it gives them reason to put the nail in the coffin.

Just get it over already Apple. Everyone is tired of you dragging us along.

Put a bullet in the mac line up already; the current lineup is a disgrace. No upgrades, glued parts, insane prices, you can't even plug your flagship product into a new 3k macbook without a freaking adapter.

This has all been done intentionally - to slowly kill off your Mac line up because you cannot control the content on Mac. You have tried with your crappy Gatekeeper software (terrible) and it failed. Now, you are trying to kill off the Mac entirely because you can't control the content via the App Store- where you already make most of your $.

Long live the classic macbook pro.

Surely you jest. They're not walking away from the Mac. That's silly. Sure, Mac Sales are only a fraction of mobile sales but it's still not an insignificant revenue figure. It ties many users needs together.

mwhaHAAHahaAHAHahaaHAHAHaaaa

AMD G700 as pro GPU... they have no shame.

for the mid range price you can get a linux / windows box with a overclock 5960X at 4.5Ghz, 16 core, 4x 1070, 128GB of ram, m2 SSD's, a hdpi screen and still go on a vacation.

These are not pro machines...
