Interesting that the built in speaker hasn't been mentioned, I guess it will be in the base of the cylinder. I thought a demo would be guaranteed today.. Odd. Also, what a freaking amazing manufacturing process.. Unbelievable.

Not in a darkened room, where your persistence of vision smooths it out. That's the same trick they've used in movie theaters since the beginning of 24P film. Although, in the theater, they double flash each frame of film for a pseudo 48hz effect. Cartoons were done at 12fps and nobody complained about their eyes getting killed. People watch 1080 30P all the time without their eyes getting killed.

Try playing a game at 30 fps and then tell me that doesn't hurt your eyes. It sucks. Anything computer related running at less than 60 fps is a joke right now. Movies don't suck because we are used to it by now. So it's a bad example. But computers, we have always used them at 60 fps.

No, movies are a good example, because that's where the 4K workflow will be utilized. If you're doing audio, you don't need to run 4K video.

This isn't marketed as a gaming machine.

Who predicted this?

There have been a bunch of posts on multiple sites. The (wrong) assumptions included that it would only come in a 12 core version, that the video cards would add thousands to the cost of the machine, etc.

$2,999 for an Intel Xeon E5-1620 v2 @ 3.70 GHz?

What a waste of money. If the 32 bit scores on a Dell running an Intel Xeon E5-1620 v2 @ 3.70 GHz only scores Single-Core: 3239 or Multi-Core: 13367, it's insignificantly faster for CPU-bound software such as audio. 2 x BTO Mac Minis with 2.6Ghz i7s would be of more use. You could add the cost of Apple's SSD prices, a sonnet rack mount system and Logic X while still paying more for the Mac Pro. Use the second Mac for software synths via remote processing and you have 2 systems running over 87% of the CPU power of the entry level Mac Pro each!

For guys who do audio for a living that's actually a huge plus. It's very common to put the computer in a separate machine room, which can require expensive extenders. So having a machine this powerful and this quiet is very exciting for audio guys.

Yeah, I know. I do audio work, not for a living, but have done enough to know quiet is good in a studio. But there are other ways achieve this without spending so much money on this video production focused system. I rolled my eyes because the other videos said, "Performance is stellar!" but they weren't able to say that with audio, so they came up with "quiet!"

Besides, what they said is a bit disingenuous. Yes, their cooling system is quieter, and SSDs help a lot, but because they downsized the case, all those external storage units you'll now have will have their own noisy fans.

Those dual GPU's are there for a reason.

;)

So much for the predictions that the base model couldn't possibly start any less than $6000. I'm dying to see the full price list of the 6, 8, and 12 core versions.

Quad-core starting at $2,999. 6-core starting at $3,999.
Coming in December.

I'm guessing it just goes up a thousand for each bump.

I want one. I'm just really disappointed that the base model will cost $1000 more here in Australia (listed price on AU Apple site). That's 33.3% more expensive. :(

No, movies are a bad example. When you are working with movies on your mac, your interface is still 60 fps. Only your movie is at 24p or 30. If my mouse isn't moving at 60 fps, I'll go crazy.

Shucks, $3k for entry. Was hoping for a little cheaper and 512gb HDD in base entry model. We'll see how CTO options pricing looks and wait for an updated mini to decide...

FireGL is the industry standard for graphics professionals who need native 30-bit color support. That is why Apple chose ATI over Nvidia. Sure for playing 3D games it seems Nvidia is a better choice but that isn't what the Mac Pro would be for.

the processor cost for 12 core is 2200$ higher than the 4 core one. Do the math.

256 GB PCI-e based SSD costs a bit more than 500$. So 512 GB for base model would at least add another 500$. The SSD is actually the single most expensive piece of hardware in the base model.

It doesn't come with a keyboard and mouse for $3000?????

I'd wager that most of the people who are in the market for a Mac Pro aren't going to use the regular Apple Keyboard. On my original Mac Pro the keyboard never left the box.

They're really dropping the ball on screens. I think it's a huge detriment to their mac mini sales. The primary reason people buy mac's is because they're beautiful and the primary reason they don't buy them is because they're expensive.

You can get a mac mini for cheap, but you need to use an ugly display. You can get an imac, but it's glued to an expensive display. Just put out a $300 22" nice apple display people can use for 5-10 years and they'll sell twice as many mac mini's, maybe even a few more mac pro's.

And make a beautiful pro screen for $1000 and they'll sell 38.5% more mac pro's.

Was so happy to see it at that pricepoint, exactly what it should have been and such a great deal! Two AMD Firepro’s with 6GB GDDR5 as standard! Just wish it had more cores as standard but I'll just have to upgrade :p I cant wait to see that machine sitting on my desk :D

Just wish they had debuted a 4K display with it so I could have a nice looking 4K monitor... I might just get a second hand TB display and then save up for when they release the Apple one :)

Yes it is useless for just web surfing and making forum posts. But they got YOU covered, notice the iPad they announced. Get one of those and save $2,500.

If you can't figure out why someone might want this you don't need one.

You don't know me, I work in 3d content creation, I would like to work with a Mac because I like Mac OS but this is just not an option for me and I can't see who it is for.

Why do video pros need something with features like small, pretty and quiet, (ok quiet would be really nice). I would prefer ability to expand, upgrade and use old expensive hardware. I bought the G4 Cube, I'm not making that mistake again but unfortunately it's apples only option? or are they going to update the old pro?

I feel like it would make an amazing consumer machine with an i7 and under $2000.

This is a reasonably portable device. I often take my Mac Pro out for field work, and this is going to be easier.

It would be nice if we could connect a MacBook Pro laptop as its display/keyboard.

Actually, Apple should come out with folding Display/Keyboard accessory product, basically like a laptop, but without the CPU/HD/etc.., and just connect to this unit while in the field.

It would be much easer than dragging a cinema display/keyboard around.

We can't really use MacBook Pros for this kind of heavy-duty field work. We need high-bandwidth monsters like the Mac Pro instead.

I used to say that about i7 but at this point the comparable i7 and Xeon chips are about the same price. I would love to see a single gpu option added at a lower price.

Why would you need internal expansion when external expansion will do?
