Kinda fugly. I miss the original aluminum Mac Pro. It was beefy yet sleek looking, but most of all, it was in the realm of affordability.

So you don't agree with Jony Ive that the inside of cabinet drawers should be treated with as much care as the outside? Meaning, even if it's not seen, it should still look good. Because the designer will know. Well, in this case everyone will know.

The new Mac Pro is surely a beast, but on aesthetics it can't compete with the old cheese grater Mac Pros. And at least in my opinion for pure aesthetic appeal it's one of the worst Mac designs Apple has come up with.
I like it. A lot. Maybe it’ll grow on you.

Maybe not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Dune Case does not have the circular latch on top, which is clearly visible on this picture. (there is a rolled up cable arount it)
Youre right yet so does the Mac Pro - it too doesn’t have a latch raised ring looking like an ash tray at the top.

You're kidding right? I see loads, plus theres plenty of places for them to hide in this photo.

nope. It’s genuine. Google photos of the case you’re talking about, they don’t look like this. specifically the top latch. Unless Calvin designed this new replica, which is silly.

Have you not heard many modern songs in the past decade? He’s had a few top 40s... I don’t listen to his music either but they still appear around Spotify.
as for the feet.... they’re feet.... what the hell did you want them to look like?

jesus people.

and the real funny thing why would Apple give this machine to a DJ who hasn’t produced as many collaborations or tracks remixes as much as say even BT ~ who’s never had an apple pre released hardware that was NOt featured in a promotional commercial.

I CNBC see a great movie producer but a DJ of his caliber ... no.

you do recall the Power Mac G5 announcement to do you? Have a look on youtube please ... Panther got more cheers from the crowd (saying a lot since Apple stacks the front 3 rows with cheerleader fans and coders super loyal to Apple). There where more cheers about the architecture vs the unveiling. It started the cheese grater design and it seemed VRRY ugly to a lot of dull customers but it’s performance and expand ability was the key to its great sales. Comparatively almost as expensive as the new one.

The first time I heard of this guy was through this story's headline "Mac Pro Spotted in Studio of DJ Calvin Harris Ahead of Launch"
Creative professional? Who??
lol you guys are hilarious.
He's an internationally renowned music producer. You may not like his music or listen to something obscure, but that's on you, not him.
He's not my favourite artist either, but anyone that's remotely in music business probably knows Calvin Harris.

Who do you think will use Mac Pros? Rihanna? Leonardo DiCaprio? Probably editors and producers that aren't in the spotlight...

You might be too young to be familiar, or maybe too old. Or maybe proudly displaying a lack of knowledge is what passes for being edgy on the Internet these days ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"But if I don't know them then nobody knows them and they aren't important, right?"

I'd never heard the name before this. I figured that that's mostly because I'm not very good at keeping track of all 7 billion humans, and some of them can get quite rightly well known without getting on my radar.

Who the hell is Calvin Harris?
You know, there's this one weird trick you can do with the address bar of any web browser that would answer that question for you in seven seconds, instead of expecting (and waiting for) people here to write custom answers for you.

Maybe it will help him make decent music versus what we’ve been used to getting from him.

Agree. Wake up people this is how media works (ref politics)
Monday's article at the Wall Street Journal, which provided confirmation of an Apple tablet device, had all the earmarks of a controlled leak. Here's how Apple does it.

Often Apple has a need to let information out, unofficially. The company has been doing that for years, and it helps preserve Apple's consistent, official reputation for never talking about unreleased products. I know, because when I was a Senior Marketing Manager at Apple, I was instructed to do some controlled leaks.

https://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/how_apple_does_controlled_leaks
I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but that was a terrible article and almost 10 years old.

Believe me because I claimed to work at Apple and proceed to give the most generic quid pro quo journalism interaction ever.

someone who makes enough money and has enough recognition in music business for apple to send him a preproduction mac pro.
as opposed to literally everybody in this thread
It sounds like you have more of issue with MacRumors rather than everyone in this thread. To us ignorant, readers, a headline involving a DJ and name we never heard means some guy that pushes a button on his laptop to play music at parties. Some would say that they qualify as a creative pro who would get early access to a new Mac Pro. Others would say that they are an overpaid button pusher with a lot of followers on social media. Either way, most of us will never be hearing his name again because he is behind the scenes so maybe when he gets a better publicist, he’ll get better titles and headlines too.

He doesn't need them. He makes tons of money, people who need to know who he is know who he is, and obviously, apple knows who he is and appreciates him enough to give him a preproduction Mac Pro.

And you damn well know that "Who is that" type of comment is just a smug elltist drivel from boomers because "music was better in 1943".

I don't have issues with MacRumors. If you don't know who Calvin Harris is you've been living under a rock, and that's fine, but I don't get why the need to announce it in this thread, so narcissistic.

Um, it doesn’t matter who he is beyond “you can easily research that he’s an audio pro”. The story is that a pro leaked that he’s using a Mac Pro. That’s it. “I don’t know this dude” doesn’t add to the story.

Why are you and others spreading false information? The PowerMac G5, or any of the cMPs, are NOT comparatively "almost as expensive as the new one."

The PowerMac G5 debuted at $1,999 in 2003. That is $2,493 in today's dollars.
The 2008 cMP can be configured to be $2,300 with a Wifi card and a quad core processor. That is $2742.86 in today's dollars.
The 2012 cMP wasn't a great value, but the quad core 3.2 had an MSRP at $2499. That is $2794.68 in today's dollars.

The new Mac Pro is $5,999.

Calm down Quotey McQuoterson. I never said "I don't know this dude". I asked "The real question is why does any DJ need a Mac Pro?" You and Ploki are too busy defending this guy to even answer the question.

I LOVE THIS!
The term DJ no longer means Disc Jockey because today’s DJs don’t or very barely use discs of any kind (records, CDs MiniDiscs); not even seratto on digital coded vinyl ... most of these “house/trap/tech house” DJs or whatever the genre name is now used software on MP3s and like you said pressed the “sync” button during DJ’ing at parties the. Clubs the. Travel the world high as F at masses beach parties jumping to the high jumps of ravers or candy kids popping E, K, M or whatever Pez dispensing candy of the alphabet until they’ve completely forgotten not o yo their life problems and ambitions but also what planet they’re on until the random start conversations when their really sounding like jibber jabber mouths from Fat Albert.
Yeah been in the scene before it got me into a joke.

Calvin Harris is world known, makes crazy cash now because HE isin the k ow of kiddies and in the hype for now remixing (most of his credentials is remixing) music.

two tea producers who would really put a 2019 Mac Pro to real use and max out its capabilities:

Timberland worked with many artists created his own music and music style used by great artists (actually influencing their sound Justin Timberlake~ inspiring him to dabble into his own production~ One Republic and Nelly Furtado who’s taken a bit of a relaxation period for the past few years but you know both their sounds when they were on top of the charts. He’s remixed 2 entire albums of high school friend Missy Elliot. Has his OWN professional recording studio - not some mini lab in a condo as featured by Calvin Harris in this IG photo.

I mentioned 80’s BT DJ/producer as well For reference as Allen featured him in 2 major product launch introduction videos in the 90’s. I’ve listened to his creative work and although I detest it I’d wager he was just as if not bigger in his prime yet where is he now?

there is also world renowned and VERY respected DJ, producer and innovator that’s been in the industry for over2 decades - Lil Luis Vega but he doesn’t tend Apple to coax him he knows his craft and skill. You may know now him but look up his earlier work Masters At Work and you’ll see the wide range him and forme partner worked on. He’s much older now but again very well respected by peers both new and old and can mix and scratch and produce from scratch.

my point? I don’t see Apple going from featuring JJ Adams for a Mac Pro back in 2013 to Calvin Harris who’s be incredibly stupid enough to break NDA for a house part in a messy pic by some party goer. It just doesn’t seem right especially with how crappy that case top looks.

debut cost is n the top end cost of the G5 btw.
2005 article from CNET:

The base configuration of this Power Mac costs $2,999, but the system we tested comes to $5,397 with memory and graphics upgrades plus Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 20-inch Cinema Display.[\QUOTE]

That’s in USA dollars without a monitor so where are you getting. Your pricing and where are you getting getting your math for “in today’s dollars” figures?

your facts seem to be very wrong just on the pricing back when the G5 was released to begin with. He’s the 2019 Mac Pro has a LOT more expand ability and is more expensive. I did say comparable not with every configuration.

I do. All I am saying is that IF the 16" MBP is going to be announced it will be alongside the Mac Pro.

So, I still remain optimistic about a possible Tuesday announcement.

And those that say definitely 2020, don't know crap unless they are getting the news direct from Apple.

fare enough.

It's kinda worse.
2008 cmp was 2300$ with a DUAL Quad core, so 8 cores.
So, 8-core.
2019 MP is 5999$ with single 8-core, so 8 cores, but 11 years later.
Obviously, performance core-for-core is not the same, but the dual Quad was relatively chip for what it was.
