Don't count on Blue Ray. Remember when Apple astonished the public by removing the floppy disk drive? Everyone thought Apple was stupid...

True, but at least something had replaced the Floppy Disk before Apple took it out. Thumb drives were kind of expensive back in 1998 but they were an option, and people could actually store and transfer files online and over Bluetooth since the weren't that big.

I don't think I'd want to wait around for an HD movie to transfer over BT, or for my 1.2 TB media library to back up to a USB stick.

From what I remember every app should be "Grand Central Enabled" from what I've read it was supposed to do the "sending information to the cores" thing for you, instead of the app needing to be written for it.

No, you have enable your code, though it's not hard to do.

I checked a bunch of west coast stores and the story's the same. Unavailable 8-core or completely unavailable .

My prediction :

Dual 6-core and lower end AMD this Tuesday.

It's about damn time to update the MacPro.
Hopefully new displays will come along. Specially 30" or new larger ones.

What if (and this is random speculation) Apple opted to stop building the Mac Pro and instead built a slightly thicker and beafier iMac Pro ...

I think the strategy could work for most buyers. Then they could offer a higher end tower type computer that would appeal to the real business based power users.

So your strategy would be to discontinue the Mac Pro and then introduce...a Mac Pro?

Um...

Let's hope that this update brings some great new options -- maybe Blu-ray and SSD configs!

Will you guys STOP asking about Blu-Ray?! Nobody uses it anymore. The only things that come out on it are Disney stuff and a few things like Avatar. It's overpriced and overrated. It uses high compression H.264 to achieve stunning, crystal clear ragged edges in HIGH DEFINITION (being sarcastic) :p.

A DVD player with upscaler does the job for a lot less $$$ and no loading time.

As far as SSD... Doesn't it already have SSD configs? Or was that for the MacBook Pro or iMac?

It seems that Apple is wanting to simplify their line - and the MacPro is a niche machine relative to the iMac. I think the strategy could work for most buyers. Then they could offer a higher end tower type computer that would appeal to the real business based power users.

No way man.
All professionals out there will have a fit. Apple have their larger margins of profits on the Mac Pro. I hardly believe they have any reason to piss off the most loyal group of people who has been using Macs for years.

iMac is great for many people but expansion and power are key to many people and iMac just does not deliver it.

Well!!

This is interesting. I was just in my MacMan store talking to the salesman about upgrading from My MB to a MBP due to the RAM. My MB is only 5 months old and they gave me quote of $650. Apparently it's a sign to slow my butt down and see the tide roll in. Now that I think of it, I would be on the market for a MBP bought in the last year since it seemed good enough before reading this.

Pm me if so.

I wonder if Apple is holding back the release of the new Mac Pro line because the new Mac Pro bumpers aren't ready yet? How funny would that be? A giant black rubber band for your Mac Pro.

Seriously though, I would love to see a refresh of the Mac Pro. The Apple store in the Syracuse NY area didn't even have one on display the last time I was there. It was all iPhone and iPad. Perhaps the smaller mall stores will always suffer?

Ugh. The market they are targeting want multiple screens, and to upgrade monitors separately from the rest of the computer hardware.

An all-in-one "pro" machine just doesn't cut it.

See mouse overs for Minority Report. (Which isn't even a best case scenario) The DVD upscales were done with software comparable to a DVDO scaler. It's NOT EVEN CLOSE.

These were cropped from outputted lossless png files.

Odd that you'd rag on H.264 as being inadequate but turn around and say DVD is good enough.

Not in my room it isn't, and not by a long shot.

And nobody uses it anymore?

I negged this story because some mac pro weenies neg any story that doesn't have to do with macs, or mac pros.

Apple has to keep MP line

I don't think the iMacs will cut it for heavy film, music, animation, rendering, etc. etc. I do heavy music scoring and need all the power I can get. At one time was considering an iMac but they don't offer speed increases over the new Gulftown Macs. I also need more USB/Firewire ports which the iMacs don't have.

So I am sheepishly admitting I read and responded to this half awake and now realize this ISN'T about MBP's.. Just Mac Pro's...
