Will you guys STOP asking about Blu-Ray?! Nobody uses it anymore. The only things that come out on it are Disney stuff and a few things like Avatar. It's overpriced and overrated.
Only from deep within the reality distortion field could anyone actually believe this.

To declare Blu Ray overpriced and overrated in a thread touting what will surely be an inconsequential upgrade to a highly overpriced piece of hardware like the Mac Pro is laughable.

New mac pro update eh? I predict:

6 core Xeon processor
6 gigs of ram
1tb harddrive
Geforce 460GTX (PLEASE DO THIS APPLE)
New case redesign to make it more unibody
Completely redesign of the insides

At the same time introduction of new 27 inch Cinema display and discontinuation of the old 30 inch cinema display.

Only reason to find Blu-Ray on a Mac is if it's a burner. Final Cut Pro can make Blu-Ray discs, if memory serves. I know Toast can, with the proper add-on. But for playback? Apple would have to have the software. They don't seem interested.

The issue to me is not so much a BluRay device, as FCS improvement to allow BluRay authoring. CS5 Encore doesn't cut it, especially since you need to the whole suite just to get that one piece. DVD SP needs to become BD-SP (whatever). Then the hardware needs to be ready to play Bluray movies (both BD-R that we generate via FCS / Toast / whatever, and commercially pressed movies), and that means HDCP compliant monitors, display cards, etc.

That likely means that BluRay playback to older monitors (like, my 30" ACD) won't work (no HDCP), so new monitors needs to be available, too.

I want BluRay for authoring and limited playback to test production. I watch real movies on a real viewing system.

What is a more "unibody" case? I wouldn't mind a redesign, but that just doesn't make sense to me. You think they are going to waste all of that aluminum, drilling out the center that way, for something that would sit under a desk? Besides, you need to be able to open the side easily anyway...so no...definitely not a "unibody" case on a desktop.

And also, why redesign the insides? They are fine. It is generally quite functional. If they can improve their cooling then yes. But a redesign of internals for a redesigns' sake...well that's just not good at all.

From what I remember every app should be "Grand Central Enabled" from what I've read it was supposed to do the "sending information to the cores" thing for you, instead of the app needing to be written for it.

Yes, very glad to see a more weighty RUMOR on Macrumors, especially one about the OLD AS DIRT 2009 Mac Pro.

Nope, you have to rewrite for Grand Central. Most definitely not automatic.

(I'm a developer.)

Will you guys STOP asking about Blu-Ray?! Nobody uses it anymore. The only things that come out on it are Disney stuff and a few things like Avatar. It's overpriced and overrated. It uses high compression H.264 to achieve stunning, crystal clear ragged edges in HIGH DEFINITION (being sarcastic) :p.

A DVD player with upscaler does the job for a lot less $$$ and no loading time.

As far as SSD... Doesn't it already have SSD configs? Or was that for the MacBook Pro or iMac?

You are misinformed and likely have an inferior viewing system. BluRay Movies are plentiful (everything new comes out on them, and a bunch of stuff is being reissued; wait for 3D that will REQUIRE BluRay for the bandwidth); on any screen larger than 42", the improved clarity and color range of BluRay 1080 is evident, even to seeing eye dogs ;-)

Upscaled DVD is fine, but watch an upscaled DVD next to the same movie on BluRay ... imagine, actual blacks!

I couldn't afford it, but if I could, I'd love to see it come with SATA III. I would so get the RAID card and put 4 of this bad boy in there, especially if Apple adds TRIM support. Oooh, I think I just came.

I'd love to see SATA 6GB too. In the next couple of years most decent SSDs will saturate the SATA 3GB bus. The Crucial C300 drive saturates it in read speeds but the OWC Mercury Pro SSDs write faster. But both are very fast, capable, and desirable SSDs.

'Apple failed to meet that rumored target. '

Why so negative? How is this apple's failure? Should refer to this as 'rumorgate'?

How about:

Ignorant boogers, that is, bloggers fail to know what apple is up to.

There, put failure where failure is due

Mac Pro Refresh Please!!! wishful thinking on Blu-Ray

Even though Steve-O says Blu-ray is a bag of hurt, and Apple probably would never do it, because it would hurt iTunes and Apple TV sales. Blu-Ray on a Mac Pro would be really cool...I have a PS3 and damn, that thing plays every blu-ray i stick in it, no problems ever, not to mention killer games as well. So please let there be a Mac Pro Refresh soooooon!

What? More unibody? So, you hope to take a giant block of aluminum and carve out the center?

I mean, that would waste more material.

This really doesn't mean anything..

I am sure they are just waiting to get more in stock.. just at my local apple store and they still have plenty of mac pros in stock.. Without any evidence or factual proof, a rumor is nothing but an empty speculation.

The mac pro does NOT

Make the highest margins at all.. what have you been smoking?? if anything, the mac pro barely makes even a profit given its a niche machine.. iphone makes more profit than the mac pro.. laptops make more money than the mac pro, and possibly desktops in general(mobile computing is the future, desktops are waning).

No way man.
All professionals out there will have a fit. Apple have their larger margins of profits on the Mac Pro. I hardly believe they have any reason to piss off the most loyal group of people who has been using Macs for years.

iMac is great for many people but expansion and power are key to many people and iMac just does not deliver it.

I hope to see a move, or at least an option for the faster serial attached scsi hard drives. I have a new PC (only because MacPros were out of spec) but could see myself making the justification if the faster drives are there. All of my work lately is HD intensive and while my PC is snappy as hell at processing, editing, converting and compressing stuff... saving said work or copying it out to an external is SLOWWW as all hell.

This is just a random Hard Drive comment, but I think the emphasis has been so much on capacity the last two years or so, that nobody thought how long it would take to copy and move such large volumes of stuff around. Speed needs to enter back into the equation!

Anyhow, thats my two cents. I'm eager to see what they do.

I just got a dodecacore boner.

New case redesign to make it more unibody
Completely redesign of the insides

The case becomes the heatsink :D?

just don't touch it, you might short it out. (yes I know *mumble mumble* and this-joke-is-played-out-beyond-belief)

Yes it is.

wait, i am a genuine idiot, I was likening magnetism to electrical conductivity.

if you excuse me, im going to edit my post to not look like such a prat.

...I need to brush up on my GCSE physics!

MacPro per unit is profitable for Apple (cost to build the unit against the retail price) , if you want to compare the the amount of units sold, then for sure laptops and the iMac outsell MacPro way more.

There, put failure where failure is due

You have a point, but how about a technology company that does not update their top end computing platform for over 16 months - an eternity in the tech world - and provide no explanation.

Put failure where failure is due.

Um

I don't think the iMacs will cut it for heavy film, music, animation, rendering, etc. etc. I do heavy music scoring and need all the power I can get. At one time was considering an iMac but they don't offer speed increases over the new Gulftown Macs. I also need more USB/Firewire ports which the iMacs don't have.

We'll look at that. I do heavy music scoring myself and my old G5 2.5 has less USB ports than the i7 iMac. I have four gigs more ram (12 versus 8) and I'm connecting to my G5s drives via FW800. We'll see how it goes.

If it doesn't work out I can always cross-grade.

Don't post s*** that you don't know!! God I hate fanboys!

Perhaps for content consumers but for content CREATORS you need to have the heavy lifting. There's no way around it. It would be nice to create hollywood movies or giant music productions on a portable device but it's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
anytime soon.
