After being away for a few days, it is nice to see that this thread is finally going somewhere: The new MacPro will have a wonderful big retina display. :D
Just 650 days more and any pro can make a call to Tim. Just to hang up on him. No, a MacPro is not a phone.

well all the shipping days are more than 3 days in all european apple-stores, so it's even pretty hard to buy the current outdated model now... there must be any news soon???

I'm guessing June now. Seems like they might actually wait for Mountain Lion (rumored June release today) and a possible all macs update June release now. With only a month to go I suppose they might as well wait now.

What am I supposed to do with my 2 x 30" monitors? This sucks, what an insult this is becoming.

IF we get new machines...

... will they run Final Cut Studio 3HD (ie FCP 7)?? There is already a Lion/Final Cut Studio 2 (& 3) HD install problem (ie, it won't). And FC X is a mess.
I don't want to buy a pc and run Premier – I've spent a lot of time and effort learning FCP and it's subsiduary apps – and I still much prefer the Mac OS, even in its iPad Lion-ness.

My ancient G5s have died and I'm limping along on a couple of laptops – not sure I can hold out much longer. If they bring out an iMac with enough welly and a non-reflective screen and Thunderbolt, I might be forced to cave in.

And all the time, the sneaking (but not unfounded) suspicion that the bean counters have taken over our world and there will be no redeming and brilliant solution for those of us who actually use our machines to make things instead of mindless consumption of predigested rubbish.

Indeed, Apple hit a crest, not sure if they are going to keep innovating at the higher end at this point. Making money may be more important than innovating.

I am getting serious about switching over to Windows as an Apple lifer. I am wondering if it's an easy switch, can you migrate TBs of data from Mac to PC?

The new MacWorld magazine has a short article about us waiting impatiently for a long overdue refresh.

I just officially switched from FCP to Premier, and premier has a bunch of awesome features and all-in-all functions a lot better. It took me awhile to finally switch over, but now that I have I actually like it a lot better.

Oh, and I'm cutting raw R3D 4k files from the Red Epic flawlessly which is a major win.

Next Week... Ahem that was more than ten weeks ago....

The last article on the Mac Pro was on March 1 stating a rumor that the Mac Pro would be announced in one week. Well, one week has come and gone ten times and we have heard nothing from Apple. I am surprised that MacRumors has also been silent and not come out with some kind of article stating that the information they received was bogus and that there is no news.

UGH... It is time to build a super duper hackintosh -- I would rather not, but Apple is giving me little choice.... Apple no longer seems to be on the cutting edge of computing, at least for folks like me that need the power that a new Mac Pro would provide for my digital Photo business. I am getting very impatient.... and a bit worried that Apple no longer cares....

I love my 2007 Mac Pro but it's about time to move on. I'm kind of happy to go back to PC. Windows is pretty solid nowadays, yeah they're ugly and so what? This is for work. Im not sure why you guys are willing to put up with this wait for a new mac pro. Seriously, what a bunch of suckers. It's clear as daylight that Apple doesn't care about you anymore. So why should you care about them? Maybe they will come out with a new Mac Pro, then what? That's crazy, are we going to wait for two-year cycles, then three years cycles, then what?

They've given the pro users the middle finger for making us wait so long. Yet so many of you just sit here and whine about them not taking care of you. MoveOn, it's okay you can accomplish the exact same thing on a PC. It's just to make money right? Then go and buy some iToys if you just want to relax with a cool trendy device.

What would be the point? If Mac drops the higher powered computers that are needed to work with media heavy loads, the software will certainly not keep up with the operating system as the media heavy folks focus on the Windows system. If Apple doesn't keep produce something equivalent to the Mac Pro, then it would be a waste of time to hack their OS.

As for the other moving on issue, I would be happy to move on, but I am not going to move on if Apple comes through with an update. It's a big change to make for Mac lifers, and the last thing a lot of us want to do is move on, then two weeks later Apple renews its commitment to the Mac Pro.

The idea of them killing off the Mac Pro is not the problem, the problem is not knowing whether they are going to do it.

As for a practical business decision you're almost obligated to move on. There's always a relationship between the company that builds the tools and the company that uses the tools in order for the company to run.

Apple is NOT interested in this relationship anymore. Now I understand the struggle between a life long relationship with your machine and all the software you've built up over the years. Change can be painful.

What I don't understand is that even if apple gives you a new MP tomorrow, we still waited almost 2 years.. That's a terrible cycle especially with no communication to the small business that that use the device.

I would much rather go and support a company like BOXX who are committed to people who need these machines.. AND you can actually call them!!! Amazing!!

This is why it's important to move on... A. for yourself & B. for the industry. Support those who support you for godsake!!

I think apple has done great damage here with their business relationships and I don't even think they care.

This is why I encourage you to move on.

Apple has hurt those of us who have supported the product from day 1, repeatedly. If there is nothing official by July 1, I am jumping ship.

I will go when we hit the tipping point and the original Mac lovers who promoted Apple products to all our friends and need high-end Macs start a migration out of the Mac OS. What I would like to see is some kind of organized statement to Apple, accompanied by reasons why we are making the switch, and guidance for people on how to make the switch. Maybe that would be more effective than this, https://www.facebook.com/MacProsPlease

Right now, I don't have a clue how to get 8 TBs of data so that I can read it and transfer it onto Windows drives. There are tons of web sites showing how to switch from Windows to Mac but I can't find any kind of guides on how to go the other way. There is probably an easy way to do it.

I don't think there's a single cut and dry easy way to do what you want to do here, but this should help you out a bit.

If you make the attempt...good luck.

That link looks like a good tool - but I personally would be sure to follow your original goal of "transfer it [8TB] onto Windows drives".

I think that there are too many risks to take the shortcut and just use that driver and leave the data on HFS. NTFS is a very, very good filesystem - and will have no issues with patches, updates and service packs.

A third party filesystem without support from either Apple or Microsoft - I'd worry about using it for anything but a transition tool.

This. It's not a one stop solution to his problem, it's just there to help him out. If I were to use it, I'd back up all my data beforehand then transfer it all between the HFS drive to an NTFS formatted one.

...but damn. He's got 8TB of stuff he's gotta swap. 2TB is the largest you can get on a single drive these days, right? To do that, he'd have to buy 8 of them plus the external drive enclosures just to do it. That'd be a hefty chunk of change. His only other options for a quick solution would be to forego the backup entirely and pray he doesn't corrupt any of his files in the transfer, or try to find a way to convert the drives he's got from HFS to NTFS...which, if it's possible, would require 10x the praying, and net you about 50x more chances of something will go horribly wrong.

He could play it the slow and safe way, which would be networking the computers together and transferring all his files in chunks. But that'd take forever to do, and he'd still have to buy another 8TB worth of space to store it all on.

There are ways he can do it, but none of them are cheap, easy, fast, and problem free all at once. He either does it safe and slow, or quicker and slightly more risky and expensive,or cheap as hell and fast but something will probably go wrong.

Yeah...good luck. :p

My creative professional colleagues have their doubts about Apple killing off the Mac Pro. They are long time Mac users who were instrumental in my conversion to Mac. They do commercial work for some of the Fortune 100 headquartered in my town like Target and Best Buy and the local pro sports teams. There is no way they see Apple taking away the tools for their trade and leaving them with buggy Windows to get their job done. :apple:

There are tons of web sites showing how to switch from Windows to Mac but I can't find any kind of guides on how to go the other way.

Most likely due to "once you go Mac, you never go back." :D

First, I was trying to support your post. I find most of them quite good. I was only trying to say that she should resist the temptation to get the HFS driver and leave the data on HFS drives.

Actually, 4 TB drives are available now for $300.

Two of those in a RAID-0 enclosure (or 3 of them in a RAID-5 enclosure) would be enough.

With a Sans-Digital 5 bay eSATA enclosure you could have 16 TB of RAID-5 storage. (Windows 7 supports software RAID-5, so no need for a fancy hardware RAID controller for data unless you need really high write bandwidth).

Eh. I didn't think otherwise. It takes a lot to make me go defensive, so don't worry about it. :p

Anyway, I was just shooting ideas out to see what other options he might have. Right now, I don't think he has a huge amount to choose from. Other than... I dunno...finding a place that rents out huge amounts of server space or something like, his only routes are to spend cash or take a huge risk.

On the plus side, he'll have a bunch of extra drives lying around after he's done.
