Thanks a bunch! I need all the help I can get. I dont want to throw down that kind of cash without knowing what I am doing... I've already spent enough $$$ on that windows crap....

My biggest concern now is should I wait, I need a real machine "Mac" soon... no one knows if there is really a new MP coming soon or not... and maybe the one that is available now would be plenty of power for me. besides being so upgradeable. I have been restling with this for over a week now and I am about ready to give up and go ahead and order the MP they have now. But if I do and in a month they anounce a new one I know I will be red face mad (at myself):confused::rolleyes:

Lol crap indeed..

It's always better to wait, especially when it's been this long.

Before I read that post I was quite happy designing DTP Church Newsletters with 1980's clipart ... with my ten year old eMac and dot matrix printer .. now? Now I've ordered TWO Mac Pro's with a reserve down for a third ... in case the other two break down .. and I don't even know what what they are or what I'll do with them yet!

Possibly one each side of the room .. do they work better in stereo?. And will a lot of RAM possibly damage the cavity wall insulation?. Who cares!. The mere thought of low-noise, dual socket, multiple GPU-infested cores is enough to make anyone salivate - according to my shrink at least ... isn't that right, Doctor .. is it time for my medication yet?.

I'm SO Mac Pro .. I don't even know it yet! ;)

Just so you know I'm using a 2009 MBP, never owned a MP.

Sure it sounds ludicrous for most of us, and maybe I didn't pick the best examples, but my point stands. There are applications that require large amounts of memory, just as there is software that scales well across more cores. For these situations a MP can be very cost-effective. Not convinced? Expansion's perhaps a better example. Sure with thunderbolt this may change in the future, but the reality is that today PCIe is the standard. What if you need a video or audio card?

Remember, Mac Pro's represent more than Apple's fastest computer. It represents their only workstation, and one of only two of their servers now. It's unique in Apple's product line for more reasons than I can count, meaning that there's plenty of people out there who have no other option if they use OS X. For many businesses these represent the only Macs that qualify as workstations due to their reliability, ease of expansion / replacement of components, ability to use different or existing screen, low heat / noise, etc. That's the bottom line really, my point is that for a fair number of people out there, even a 2006 MP is more viable than a brand new iMac.

I have been waiting for an update for so long... I really hope the enclosure is going to be updated as well. Hopefully rack mountable!

I have an idea...Lets make it wafer thin remove all ports and no superdrive.
We'll call it MAC thin client. Oh wait, MAC airhead? We'll add iOS 9 and give you a touchscreen monitor.no mouse or keyboard to bother you with...
Oops. Sorry I thought I was on the new macbook pro forums...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/9A405)

Mac Pro desperately needs some love.

I wouldn't expect Apple to drop the Mac Pro line. It seems that lots of folks are simply waiting for this upgrade to buy, then sales should improve.

Last week i've sold my Mac Pro 3.33 (in mild depression ever since, med should help lol)
Done that JUST because i think New MO gonna be upgraded pretty soon.... I did know that Intel will release those cupcake delicious XEON processor in march....
Apple gonna be ready to put those babies into new MP...
For me having bought OWC SSD 6G and not being able to use them efficiently in my MP was a pain in the @ss (imagine having transfert rate of 530 MB/s in all your internal drive hmmmmmmmmm!
Thunderbolt is kinda important too... OCZ and WD have annonce to affordable solution for ext storage.... With speeeeeeeeeeed for years to come....
So i have made the bet waiting till end of april... But reastically i thing it's gonna be sooner....hopefully....

You werent answering me... but you helped a lot! Thanks:)

If they do release, I can only imagine how many they are going to sell! People are going crazy over these, and with fear of this maybe being the last mac pro I think nearly everyone who has been on the edge is going to order.

I hear you. I've always gone cheaper and done the iMac (three in a row now). But two good friends go large with the Mac Pro. Their machines seem to last forever! And for at least a year or two, they are real beasts. I'd kind of like to own a Mac Pro at some point and it would be a shame if they discontinued the line. (Though I really don't think Apple will just concede the high-end computing space without a fight.)

And here I thought Thunderbolt was supposed to make the :( "But I need FOUR hot-swappable HDD bays!":( arguments obsolete.

Honestly, Thunderbolt and an external HDD/RAID box make the workflow/capability problems disappear for 99% of professionals who "need" a Mac Pro. Photo/video editing software gets much less of a boost from multiplying CPU cores than a lot of people drooling over 12-core beasts would like to admit. It's also why the vast majority of mac pros in the production world are of the lowly quad-core variety.

I'm sure there are a mythical few elites out there who actually get an appreciable, worthwhile benefit from $6k rigs, but your average FCP/Avid/CS5.5 jockey is better off buying a top tier iMac with a full RAM slot and a Pegasus TB RAID case and then simply reselling the iMac every year or two and keeping everything else.

but unless you really really really really need that 10-20% performance gain of a MacPro (compared to a high end iMac), it's not worth it

i'll be getting one for my recording studio, replacing my 7-year old g5. the current one is fine, but it doesn't have the right pci type (need pci-e) and CPU (need intel) to get Pro Tools Native.

versus an imac, a mac pro will give me:

1. faster pci-e than i can get over thunderbolt
2. the ability to put it in another room, as it's noisy
3. the ability to get super low latency when recording
4. the convenience of putting my audio and s/fx drives in the same box as the system drive
5. the ability to really jack up the RAM in 5-7 years when it starts feeling slow

so yes, i really really really really do need more than what the imac or macmini can give me.

am i niche? i don't know, i just want to work w/ the fewest limits i can.

Just because you don't need to upgrade your Mac doesn't mean that the need does not exist for others. In my Dual 2.8 Quad-core (2008), I've upgraded my RAM twice (currently at 10GB), upgraded the graphics card (the first one bit the dust), added a new hard drive. And I'm thinking about adding a PCI card for audio recording purposes. I needed these upgrades because I push my Mac pretty hard with the work I do. I need the flexibility the Pro line affords. And it was all dead simple to do -- not so with your iMac.

I agree. I have upgraded my ram (currently 10gb as well). I have three internal hard drives not including the start up drive. I have upgraded the graphic card because mine died and I added a new pci card (SeriTek/e6G).

I love the idea of an iMac because it's footprint is smaller, but I cringe at the fact of not being able to update my computer or change parts. I also love being able to swap out my start up hd if it dies which it has done twice before. I hope the Mac Pro doesn't get 86'd that would be a tragedy.

It would be great if the Mac Pro was redesigned. The thing is a beast and way to heavy for the rare case it has to be taken to the Apple store.

Reporting the words of Steve Gibson, from GRC.COM , well known security expert...."Windows and all it's 50 millions lines of code is a fuming pile of ****":D

Where can I find a copy of this report? :D

Basically because:

1)The Mac Pro is ridiculously expensive (especially in comparison to Wintel workstations/high end boxes)

2)iMacs are really pretty powerful for much cheaper...sure, they're not the exact same performance as a $3000 MacPro but unless you really really really really need that 10-20% performance gain of a MacPro (compared to a high end iMac), it's not worth it...might as well buy 2 iMacs...or, golly, just wait the extra 2 minutes while rendering something.

3)Nobody buys MacPros (mainly for the 2 reasons above) unless there is some super special need/niche...and for the folks who like to brag that they spent $2500+ on a computer with daddy's money.

My friend has a higher end $1700 iMac 27" and as for cpu cycles is concerned, the thing flies. But that's using specialty software that uses all the cores 100% of the time at full throttle. For the rest of his use, the machine still flies. Mac Pro starts at $2500 and has no monitor and a pathetic 3GB RAM installation. So again, $800 more expensive and the performance is similar. Once you start upgrading the Mac Pro you're really at $3000 minimum...so why not buy 2 iMacs? Sure, every situation is different but the MacPros really fit into a small niche.

Lets see, a Quad core or 12 cores? 10-20% Faster?

How stupid can you be? Believe it or not, people in the video/audio/ what ever industry but the Mac Pros because they have the software to use up all 12 cores.

And really? You brought windows into this?

sounds like your pretty convenced... maybe I should hold out a little longer, Id feel better tho if I just had a more sure word from Apple - but good luck on that; right...

Pros need both speed AND flexibility. And many IT staff in advertising, graphic design, post-production, and audio engineering companies would disagree with your statement that "nobody buys Mac Pros". I know, because I've seen them filling hundreds of cubicles.

Most of you what you state is indeed niche...post-production, audio engineering...not to mention Macs have been doing graphic design forever.

MacPros have their place. So did the Mac servers until Apple decided it wasn't worth the time.

Wow! A 16 core Mac Pro. Wow. Who would ever have thought. Istat menues showing 16 individual cores. Holy cores batman.

No they don't. Not in any remarkably valuable way, at least.
