I'm not waiting for one (have a MBP), but my roomate was waiting for quite a while for a new Mac Pro. He finally cracked yesterday since there wasn't a new one and went out and bought one...I just find it funny :p Still a nice machine though, 2x 2.66ghz Xeons, 4gb ram, nvidia quadra gpu

Quadra? He must be doing some serious graphics programming or CAD work eh?

HP Blackbird

HP has come out with a great looking gaming rig that makes the McPro look like an iMac except of course we have dual quad core and they only have one. However the whole tooless case is something Apple could learn from as it is something that encourages upgrades. Which of course "one dollar" Jobs would never make a big deal out of, yet HP has.
I'm very tempted. With the next service pack for Vista coming and working with Adobe products it would be a good and easy fit.
I want a MacPro but the Blackbird has enough PCI slots to handle any boost I have in mind. The MacPro is severely limited.
If Leopard comes out with Apple's usual bloat, meaning buy a new Mac "one dollar" Jobs had better introduce a sleek, mean fast MacPro. His antics, playing games with us little people is getting tiring. I'm not bothered if he cuts the price after I buy but I'm into buying the rubbish he has on offer now. It's really behind the curve.. yeah even with the 8 core 3ghz which does not really run that better.

I checked the specs and it isn't that much better than the current MacPro. It is a screamer but I wouldn't give up the security and strength of Mac OS X for a flashy computer with nothing more to add then "fluff." And Vista, no matter how many service packs it has, will never be a complete and secure product to do any sort of deadline driven business off of; if I were a windows person I would stick with XP until I had choice.

Jobs isn't as much of a cheap-skate as Bill or any other company CEO is. They all want money, I want money, you want money; you might as well but "One Dollar" in front of all of our names.

Tool-less entry was pioneered by lesser known companies before Apple or HP or any PC maker got the idea. The most successful integration of it however was the PowerMac G5, then the MacPro took it another step further.

The RAM gets up to only 8GB, that's okay for gaming, but video production and high end graphics could use some more... like 16GB.

Other than the graphics and the extra HDD which isn't that much of a benefit anyway, the machine is decent at best. Great for PC Windows Gamers, I dream to have in the next revision of the MacPro, but I will be expecting better by that time.

8GB only cuts it for gaming? I don't think so. 8GB is much more than enough for gaming (I would say 2-4 times too much) and completely adequate for video editing. We are just getting to an age where 8GB is normal, you can hardly say it isn't enough for video since people do it on 2GB-4GB everyday.

I see your point, which is to talk down the HP, but be realistic in your attempt to do so. Taking the max RAM of 8GB and saying it isn't enough is a terrible premise for your argument.

OS X is the only thing stopping many from going the other way. Apples current offering in the Mac Pro isn't very good. Bashing an HP isn't going to change that.

As someone who's spent quite a bit of time inside of both Apple and HP cases, I can tell you this: tool-less isn't always good. That said, Apple made the curious decision to use PCI slot screws on the G5. If you've never moved PCI cards around in a G5, you don't know the sheer sense of terror that comes with the prospect of dropping a screw inside of a G5.

I like the MP case design. Prior to that, the G4s were the best I had ever worked on.

The G5's stand out as something between the earlier G4 and the Mac Pro.

It's a pain in the ass to work with it when compared to MDD or the Mac Pro. I can't always guarantee a card slot is going to have a screw in it for some bizarre reason.

Apple packed the hardware much to closely in the dual processor models. I can remember toolless entry on quite a few Dell towers back in the 90's as well. Long before we ever saw the B&W G3.

Looks like you know what I'm talking about.

I agree with everyone... but I read the HP page again and you still need a provided tool to work on the thing. So marketing is just one of HP's strong points.

The only thing I hated about the G5 was the HDD on the top. That was a pain in the arse to replace. The Mac Pro takes it way further. I say this machine is nice... the Mac Pro is way behind. Let's just wait to see what Apple gives us with an update, that will be the deciding factor.

What I like about the HP Blackbird... given that it runs horrible Windows.. is that it's made expressly to make upgrading easy and possible. As for tool less upgrades the first time I encountered it was replacing drives on a Gateway.

I like the macPro but the current configuration is beginning to look jaded. Yes I know Apple got the Quad at 3ghz but still...

As for "One dollar" Jobs jibe it's harmless pointer at his so called income. Maost people get taxed on their income which is much higher.. unearned income is much less, I know... and certainly do not object.

I think though it would be nice to have a MacPro where upgrading, adding features is transparent and easy. I might be wrong but the cpu are really quite difficult to get at compared to the Blackbird.

Saying that if Apple can bring themselves to stop making toys and bring out something for work it would be nice of them:cool:

Yeah I know I don't belong to the future of Apple but I own a garage full of Apple computers and that's all I'm interested in. The iPhone/Touch iPod really don't get my juices going, compared to a super fast Mac Pro with the best feature set on eitherside of the OS divide.

Sadly I don't see that happening. Apple has a tendency to hold things back for a later release. HP blackbird has done something new. There is no holding back, it's built off the shelf as the hardware comes out and is tested.

Dell and Apple share one thing, closed architecture to lock in price value for the company but not for the customer.

Just my opinion.

Count me in! I'm waiting on a new middle grade model 3ghz 8core?? :)

i'm using a mbp 2ghz now, the 2gb ram limit is killing me in photoshop.

I know as soon as I buy a Mac Pro the whole line will refresh the next week, maybe i'll go buy one today so you guys can get a new one next week:D

At first I was annoyed that my father just went on a week-long vacation. You see I'm going to buy my Mac Pro through him as he works at a University and can get the educational discount. Now that I hear this news of you taking one for the team and ushering in the release of the new MPs, I'm quite happy. Thanks motox! ;)

You can just click the option for being in school and get the same discount. They don't verify enrollment or anything.

All OEM boxs are low cost parts. Have zero support from the hardware makers ie no retail driver support!
