question: if apple is supposedly going to upgrade the macpro in november, then why haven't they dropped the price of current macpros to clear out their inventory?

I'm sure Apple, like many manufacturers, use "just in time" manufacturing. That means that Apple's suppliers send the parts to be assembled into Mac Pro's on a daily basis with very little stockpiling of parts. That way Apple doesn't have to have huge parts warehouses sitting with expensive and paid for parts. The "just in time" manufacturing allows perhaps 1-2 days of sellable product to be ready for shipment. For that reason Apple and many others don't carry a large inventory. They may curtail BTO Mac Pro's 1-2 weeks before introducing a new or updated model. If the changes to a new Mac Pro are strictly internal, there will be no 1-2 week window. So, to answer your question, Apple hasn't dropped the price of current Mac Pro's to make room for supposedly new models in November because there is no inventory that needs clearing out.

damn. I may be selling my new mac pro. I wonder if they
will take the same memory? in the real world, how much
of a performance increase will this bring to apps like Final Cut Pro,
where I spend all my time?

this is one thing i've been wondering about. anybody think they're going to use ddr3 or something?

i'm gonna be pretty pissed if they switch they ram after the prices have finally started to get more reasonable....

You're Worrying About Cost? That's The Last Thing I'm Worrying About - WHEN??

No point in being pissed if you really want to be on the bleeding edge of what's available off the R&D building and into the manufacturing building. We're always gonna have to pay top dollar for the privilege of having the best money can buy at the time we spend it when a new model arrives on the market - especially from Apple.

Hope it's November as a Thanksgiving present. Lots of firms need it then for tax reasons as well.

Ah crap, that's a good point. Maybe there wouldn't that much of a price difference.

There are currently no Intel based workstation boards in the works that use DDR3, so don't worry.

The performance/enthusiast market is another story though.

Let's just say apple did start using this new RAM, what kind of performance increase would it provide compared to current RAM? Would the bump offset the price increase ie you'd not have to buy as much due to better performance.

Anyway, I heard that the new chipset would support both current and new RAM?

The current and upcoming chipsets support FB-DIMMS, be it DDR2-667 or DDR2-800. As long as it is Fully Buffered it should work.

You probably start seeing a slight difference at DDR3-1600, compared to conventional DDR2 but nothing that would offset the increased cost.

Would be nice if apple would finally update their graphics cards for Mac Pros. Way more important for me than a Mac Pro motherboard update...

LOL!!! That signature and the sentence above brought tears to my eyes.
Also:
"The best money can buy" hmmmm....
Dont really know if that holds up to apple products. Mainly apple is just more expensive than others - if their stuff is the best is highly questionable... Just look at the game benchmarks of the latest iMacs - even worse than the previous model... pretty sad.

You are right, the previous version iMac with the GeForce 7600GT card beat the newest iMac with the 2600 Pro card.

When it comes to video cards, Apple sucks big time.
I can not possibly emphasis that more strongly....When it comes to video cards, Apple sucks big time!!!!!!!

There are seventeen (and counting) video cards more powerful than the Mac Pro's bto X1900 XT.

I am very scared that Apple will find a way to screw up the video cards in the next Mac Pro just like they did the new iMac.

People tend to forget that the Mac Pro is a workstation and not a gaming platform. The fastest graphic card solution is not always going to do something better in the applications used by the majority of Mac Pro users.

Although a graphic card update is in order, I am far more interested in if every model of the updated Mac Pro will be two Quad-core processors rather than whether or not it has a Geforce 8800 Ultra inside.

Why do you think graphic cards are only about gaming?

Batch process a bunch of HD videos. It takes forever with the X1900 XT.

You've heard the expression that time is money? The X1900 XT wastes time.

Waiting.....................................

G4.....so slow now. Can't load recent Apple programs...but don't want to spend $$$ on the existing year-old Mac Pro just to have it updated in a month or so.:(

I don't think a graphic card is only for gaming. I am just saying that most applications on the Mac side rarely relies on the graphic card for anything, other than displaying pixels so you can see what you are doing.

I know that certain video editing programs use the graphic card for real-time effects but to the best of my knowledge Final Cut Studio 2 does not.

Basically you are correct, unfortunately (or fortunately however you want to look at it) I use 3D and FX plugins from Boris and CHV.
They are GPU intensive (CPU intensive as well). I need a video card with the highest available pipelines and fillrate.
Truth is the best video card would be a Quadro card but I'm not going to pay that kind of money.

I'm waiting until I get enough money, leopard, and a new camera. I see myself with a new Mac Pro + 23 Cinema Display in the late spring...I can hope at least.

Motion 3 Uses The Graphics Card Almost Exclusively

Motion 3 uses the graphics card almost exclusively. So you are mistaken about not needing it for Final Cut Studio 2.

January at the latest

Yea, welcome to the club. Try to hold out a while longer. But like I said before, I will be pissed if there no new MacPro by November.

I'm hoping New Mac Pros in November - but if not, they MUST update them at January’s Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco...

I've done about all I can to my G4. Maxed the RAM; installed a ATI 9800 pro.. but still the movie rendering time is getting to be a major drag.

If Apple waits until January to update the Mac Pro, that means it would not have been updated in seventeen months. Totally unsat on Apple's part if they decide to neglect it for that long. And let me fend off any possible attacks to that statement by pointing out that a dual quad-core drop-in "option" in April and a $999.00 RAID card in July DO NOT constitute valid updates.

Let's hope they get their hands on the new CPUs and chipsets well ahead of Intel's retail launch. And let's hope that they don't use the same misguided soul who chose the graphics cards for the iMac to choose them for the Mac Pro.

FOCUS Apple.......FOCUS !

begin subliminal message to Apple.......8800GTX.......8800GTX......8800GTX.......8800GTX.........8800GTX.....8800GTX........8800GTX.....[]

No, it better not come out in January. They need to end the year with a bang. And start the new year with something more retarded than the MacPro. So it better be November.

What was the longest time it has gone without a real update? (the 8 core doesn't count).

I basically remember Apple throwing a fit when they were stuck at 500mhz G4 for a year because of Motorola. I remeber they resorted to dual processors to have an improved product. They then moved to IBM produced chips.

Then they threw another fit when they didn't get the 3ghz G5 within the year by IBm. They then moved to Intel.

Now what? AMD? LOL.....
