So do I win the biggest upgrade contest? My current machine is a G4 400MHz AGB graphics (sawtooth), one of the original G4s from 2000. I want a mac pro not so much for raw power, as for longevity: my next upgrade will probably be another seven years away!

Wow, even I can laugh at you!
;)

Please don't laugh...

Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (11.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 533 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 896 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHzPlease
Boot ROM Version: 4.1.8f5

When do we realistically think the updated MacPro's will be unveiled? I am thinking of getting an iMac but the glossy screens are putting me off [I'm a graphic designer]. Should I wait? My G4 is on its last legs as it's over 6 years old.

Biggest upgrade?

Are we having a "biggest upgrade" contest? If so, I nominate myself. See my sig below for the machine (January 1999) I am waiting to replace. I'd love to see a barebones Mac Pro drop below $2000, because my strategy is to buy the lowest "pro" model and prolong its life with upgrades. Unfortunately, this means the Mac Pro is the only game in town. If necessary, I'll resort to a used one when the new ones come out, hopefully taking advantage of price drops on the used market.

As soon as Apple goes below the magic $2,000 barrier with ANY upgradable model, they get my money.

I believe under the education pricing the current Mac Pro runs just over $2,000 when stripped down.

It's $1,899 refurbished.

I'd want a new video card and Leopard though.

$2,199 for an empty 2.66GHz plus sales tax. The 2GHz model isn't up there right now and not worth paying only $300 less for.

Looking forward to the new iPods next Wednesday. That'll keep us preoccupied for a few days anyway. Anyone else here planning on buying the new iPod? I know I will be buying the biggest baddest one they offer Wednesday morning for sure.

Forget the iPod. I want my MacPro update! lol

Flash + Video + Battery Life and I might bite.

Yeah, I think I might pick one up, I don't really need one, but I'd like something to fill the gap before I pick up an iPhone when they come available next year.

You're right, I'd wait for Leopard.
At the moment, I don't see any $1899 Mac Pros on Apple's refurb list.

Intel Readies 1600 MHz Front-Side Bus Xeons

Did you guys see this yet? jrichman63 found it.

Intel Readies 1600 MHz Front-Side Bus Xeons

The Xeon E5472 features a 3.0 GHz clock speed while the E5462 features a 2.8 GHz clock speed. These models feature 80-watt thermal ratings as designated with the E moniker. Intel plans to release these 1600 MHz front-side bus processors in Q4 2007 with the rest of the Penryn family.
Q4 is October-December. So November with Leopard still makes the most sense if it's before MacWorld Expo '08.

Thanks MM thought you'd like that one. Music to my ears. Just wish the newbie title would change. How many posts till it's gone? It's like I'm new at blogging.

It'd be nice if they launched it the same day as Leopard. Wow, 80 watt thermal rating. What are the current Mac Pros at? 120 watts???

1600 MHz FSB. Wow. I remember when the jump from 400 to 533 was exciting. lol :p

Mac Pro with two E5462's and an nVidia 8800GTX would suit me just fine. :D
Maybe 16 gigs of RAM and 4 terabyte drives for kicks.

I am little fuzzy on this Penryn thing Multimedia, does the 1600mhz FSB go across the board or just the higher end? Are they still supporting 1333 on the low end.

I am really hopping that my holding out will be rewarded with a new base 2.83x8 with a 1600mhz FSB.

Should Be 1.6Ghz FSB Across The Board

The previously announced Penryns were 1333 but these newly announced ones should be used instead. I think the motherboard can auto adjust to whatever the processor's capable of so it's not much of an issue operationally speaking. i.e. retrofitting the current models with the next set of 8 cores should be a piece of cake for those who know what they're doing.

November still seems like so far away. Hope the new iPods will provide enough of a distraction in the mean time.

damn. I may be selling my new mac pro. I wonder if they
will take the same memory? in the real world, how much
of a performance increase will this bring to apps like Final Cut Pro,
where I spend all my time?

Yea same here on the FCP end. I'm sure when Final Cut 7 comes out, it will utilize all 8-cores in a way. That's why I'm waiting for the MP update, cause I'm sure every program that comes out after that will utilize all the cores.

Sign me up...

I've been waiting for Months...had faint hopes prior to the iMac event.

I made a t-shirt, "Apple had a really cool Mac event and all I got was an over priced RAID card."

*sigh*

Anyway...machine would replace the following:

PC
Intel 2.4 Overclocked to ~3
4 GB
Nvidia 8800 640
500 GBx2 SATA 3.0 Gb/s in Raid 1 array
Haupage (sp) TV/PVR Card
Vista Home Premium

My brother in-law is a big Mac Fanboi...and I promised him that I would get a Mac Pro when it could match/exceed the config above so that he could show me how much better OSX is than Vista (which I don't doubt btw).

It is just that the current pro is rather pathetic from the standpoint of someonw who isn't a much interested in rendering the next Pixar film, but would like have plenty of upgrade options, RAID, and, shocker, play the occassional 3d game.

soooo...sign me up fer da list
