6 years ago I would not consider a pc laptop. Now I would not consider a Mac
Wow. Windows 10 is garbage so you must love to measurebate.

I still get meaningful work done on a 2015 MacBook Air or a 2012 iMac. Both are fast enough for photo and video editing. The only thing lacking on both would be a Retina screen.

It's all good news from Apple as long as you're only interested in a watch or a phone.
I just made the jump from Mac to a custom built Windows box at work. It's a ton of effort to get things moved over and set up again, but my god is it fast and stable and reliable and FAST!

Cost my company a fraction of what it'd have cost to get a new-old Mac, and they were all stunned that I asked for a Windows box. Strangely, I feel more productive and less stressed now.

I can say that Windows ain't your grand-dads OS anymore.

Further, I think the iPad and iPhone will continue to be the platforms that Apple focuses on. The iPad is not really a replacement for a desktop for most of us here, but it's good for what it is and it keeps you in the Apple ecosystem.

To everyone else considering the jump, my advice: Get your trucks elsewhere if you can. Mobile computing is where Apple is going.

I'm also considering the jump to PC. Would love to go to a fully spec HPZ840. Problem with PC is no ProRes or QT! Even if you buy third party software that converts to ProRes there are issues with gamma shifts. Have you needed to tackle this problem? How is anyone handling this issue?

lol you are really suggesting wintel to mac users like it's no big deal? Camawn bro.

I'm suggesting that complaining about soldered in ram, lack of expansion etc. is pissing in the wind. It's a done deal. If you really dislike it so much that you can't live with it then you're not forced to deal with it. Again, genuinely not trying to sound like a dick but that is the reality of it, isn't it?

I don't think either are as bad as you may think but if they don't suit then there's always good old Wintel. I rag on Windows as much as the next guy but beneath the confused, ugly exterior there is, and has been very for a very long time, a solid Operating System. Like I said, trade-offs.
W10 has been junk on the 3 computers that I check regularly.

Two words, I mean pictures of the state of Mac hardware:

The upgrade prices are crazy and even the most ardent Apple buyer will usually say so.

Apple's Soldered RAM is a total scam, especially since they didn't even make the Mac Mini smaller when they did it. They charge you $300 for the extra RAM, but it only really increases the real value of the machine by $80 max.

I honestly would've rather had Apple not upgrade Mac Mini at all if I would've known about that BS they call the 2014 update. Give me a 2012 Mac Mini any day.

What else do the majority of users need?

First thing that comes to mind: USB-C.

How about next-gen connectivity?

How many devices do the majority of users have that will even plug into USB-C ?

Personally... I have ZERO devices that use USB-C. And I can't really see any new devices for me on the horizon.

If I had a new Mac with a bunch of USB-C ports... I'd either use an adapter to turn it back into regular USB-A... or I'd have to get a different cable.

USB-C offers a bunch of features for sure. But its biggest drawback is it being a different plug. So having USB-C ports isn't exactly the miracle cure we're all looking for.

I mean... I get it... USB-C is the future. But we're still plugging in present devices.

The good thing is that USB-C ports could also be Thunderbolt 3 ports. That would be great. But it would still be a different plug that would require adapters or a different cable to plug in nearly all current USB devices.

The interface is utter crap and the whole modern app thing is thoroughly misguided. I said it earlier in the thread. The kernel and core IS solid and win32 apps run as well or better than ever for the most part.

Besides the interface. It broke on all of them.

Sure, but what's Apple excuse for not incorporating Skylake?

The good, (aka high power multi core i7) skylake chips have really only just come out. The macbook and surface got low power skylake chips with all kinds of issues and they didn't end up being faster. Kaby lake might be 2 years out for the 15" MBP.

"According to rumors, Apple is planning to introduce a revamped MacBook Pro as soon as next month"

Uh, please tell me this was written in September.
It is, just a lazy mistake. Click the hyperlink and that takes you to an article about them coming in October. Honest mistake

If Tim Cook and Captain Dip **** put an ARM processor in the Mac Mini, I'm out.
If I could call an airstrike on those two clowns, I would.

This is a sad day if they head down this road. Can we find a necromancer and turn Steve Jobs into a Lich so he can rain down fire and a hellstorm on Cupertino?!

I think most of us are already trained in compromising and dealing with the limited hardware choices Apple has always been putting out because the heart of the mac experience is the software. Suggesting wintel as a replacement like it's no big deal, for mac users invested and loving the OSX platform for many years seems completely off almost like a troll suggestion (not that you intended it that way).

I genuinely didn't but when people complain so vehemently they appear to be in some kind of pain suggesting an alternative seems like a kindness

I think it's a good idea. Go ahead. "Flog" me. Whatever that means
You forgot how to use google to look up a word? A shallow keyboard is a terrible idea for a MBP. Have you ever used a real good keyboard instead of the shallow crap on the MacBook?

Update the iMac to come STANDARD with SSDs (it's 2016, way past time to get rid of the freaking mechanical drives once and for all) and 16GB RAM. They're charging a premium for old tech...they really oughta load up on the specs.

And how's about a video card that's at least somewhat up to date....

Without knowing the full specs they could still be junk. I'm still running an Ivy Bridge with a GTX980 and I'm trouble free.
They are not. I had to disable automatic graphics switching for the Anniversary Update to stop crashing.

What can be junk in this case are the NVIDIA drivers, as per the ongoing internet discussions.
