It's strange how the computer and the iPod were Apple's first two huge successes, and they have now spawned such new products that they are now not that significant anymore. Of course the iPod is still present inside the iPhone.

Also Apple please release the Retina MBP soon. With 16 GB RAM for the base model. And no image retention. kthxbye.

Nobody knows what the new Mac Pro will cost. Most people are assuming that it will be expensive but it may not be.

Starting at $1799, intro October 23rd. Source//

Honestly, that is my best guess based on the information I have. I've been researching your question for awhile...several weeks now.

Apple's computers are expensive...really expensive, compared to the rest of the market. Take Apple's 15" Retina MacBook Pro for instance, their flagship model...even a base configuration is over $2000. And looking at 15" PC/Windows laptops, most of those are around a $499 price point. Apple doesn't even sell a MacBook Air for under $800, and it's a netbook sized one at that. I will admit the 11" Air is a nice computer...but Apple's computers all demand a HUGE premium, and always have.
You might want to cast your net wider on Windows notebooks. You are looking at $499-999. $999 can get you a Haswell notebook with discrete graphics and an IPS 1080p touchscreen.

Any higher is going to be for gaming hardware or boutique ultrabooks.

It's a much cheaper machine to build. MUCH

It is a much beefer machine than a decked out $1499 Mac Mini, and that gives you 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM. The new Mac Pro delivers dual FirePro, multiple Thunderbolt 2, and most likely SSD starting at 512GB. I can still see Apple being able to deliver this at a $1799 price point, even with the 12-core processor and PCIe SSD drive. Think I am nuts, maybe? Or perhaps the entry model will only be quad-core of six-core and able to deliver at the cheaper price. I can see a top end model being around $5000, easily.

Can Apple please update the Macbook Pros already. I was really disappointed when they only updated the air. Hope they bump the standard RMBP SSD size whenever they decide to release them.

It's only a matter of time before we're all mindlessly pecking away on our iPad 10's equipped with only iTunes and the App Store.

Of course it's not. Anyone who thinks refreshes of existing models or even radically new models is going to change this has their head in the sand.

Look at how many people here proudly list a 2008 - 2010 Mac as their primary computer. And this is a place for advanced users who like computers. For most people old computers are perfectly good - they won't replace it unless they have to. There simply aren't more people to sell to.

All Apple or any manufacturer can hope to do is maintain or increase market share in a shrinking market.

There are billions of people not living in Boston or Minnesota who envy those people. They all want Apple too, even if they don't say it.

Once the new Macbook Pro with Haswell comes out there will be a huge spike in laptop sales. Many of us are waiting for this event to upgrade any of the previous 3 or so generations of Macbook Pro.
That may stop the bleeding a little bit but Apple is cannibalizing themselves. The writing is on the wall.

Exactly what did your research tell you about the price of the 12-core 2.7 GHz Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 processor alone (the one inside the new Mac Pro)?
Answer. (it is the one at the bottom).

There's not really much in their current line up to tempt me to upgrade. I want a machine that has discrete graphics so I can game, an optical drive to install software, an Ethernet port to connect to a wired network and upgradeable hard disk and ram. Oh and a non-glossy display so I don't have to stare at my own reflection while working in a well lit area.

Call me old fashioned if you like...

*yawn*

Not surprising. Make unexciting hardware and get expected results.

Retina screens on Macbook Pros: Less than meets the eye. Expensive and, once you realize you need to alter the resolution to get some real work done, you end up with the screen of a MacBook Air (on the 13") and the Hi-Res 1680x1050 on the 15". Why spend the money for a non-upgradeable, barely repairable "no user serviceable parts inside" overpriced POS?

Haswell: Better battery life. Big wow.

Where's the horsepower? I'm not talking about the upcoming MacPro; that's a niche market at best.

Time for the mini to be given some steroids.

All of them. I can pick up an Intel based notebook with Iris Pro from anyone carrying a Clevo ODM.

Hmm...so maybe it's just Samsung then that are updating later this year? I did a search on best buy and didn't see any Samsung laptops with 4th gen i5 or i7 available.

Is thunderbolt 2 available? Or will the new MBPs not have it?

Jointly

Cook and Ive should run the company together. That's the closest combo I can imagine to get even close to Jobs. Otherwise... I'm not feeling good about things.

Answer. (it is the one at the bottom).

Apple has an exclusive bulk deal with Intel and gets these for roughly $500 a piece. The processor will be the most expensive component of the machine.

At what prices? Has the the cost been announced? Or are you just assuming they will continue with current Mac Pro pricing structure?

My thoughts as well, but it might be even more $ than current ones especially since they will be assembled in USA. But even if new Pro will be priced reasonably TB accessories are so expensive that only pro users can justify spending that much on external TB drives and such.

Samsung does appear to to be an exception.

Even lowly Acer has Haswell notebooks readily available.

I believe you're all mistaken when you say Apple abandoned the Mac. Going to buy one next year (plus an iPad), and you can be sure that I wouldn't buy it if I didn't like the iPhone so much.
Plus the tablet market won't grow forever.

No there won't. While the MacBook Air doesn't sell as well as the Pro, it still sells quite well. Haswell came out - no spike in sales. Not only not a huge one, but not a small one.

I don't care WHAT Apple introduces. They could introduce MBPs that run 18 hours on a charge, weigh less than the current models and run at Retina resolution at 1600x900 gaming laptop speeds and cut the price of these models to current cMBP prices - and a year from now we'll be looking at a decline in sales from this year's figures.

Declining market for ALL manufacturers. Plenty have it a lot worse than Apple does. It's not because of the economy. It's not because of lack of innovation. It's a mature product and there aren't new customers entering the marketplace. Most people only want computers to the extent that they can't live without one. They don't like or enjoy them.

nevermind. I am all speculation about the Mac Pro, but I like to think it's educated speculation. I may not be right in the end about any of it, HA!

Will be the first Mac I have bought since my 2011 MacBook Air. Wooo!

My heart bleeds! How you must be suffering on that ancient bit of kit!!

Last month I replaced my early 2007 MBP with a new Mac Mini so I like to think I have contributed. To be honest, though, I could have easily gone another year on the MBP but I fancied a treat. Before the MBP I was on my lime green 2001 iMac (which I still have). These Macs last well :)
