Most people only want computers to the extent that they can't live without one. They don't like or enjoy them.
Uh... no. It's now a market driven by content "consumption" as opposed to creation. The iPhone and iPad killed the laptop. Throw in a few gaming consoles and the declining numbers look about right.

It's really that simple.

Exactly right?!

They are going down the toilet.

MAVERICKS?!? I thought that was a basketball team!

Will our next OS X Release be called OS X Clippers?

Yes exactly, when the guy said Mavericks, my butt cheek sagged to one side and I drooled, he gave me temporary brain damage with such ridiculous news, hahahahah! The worst basketball team in the history of basketball.

I thought they were just gonna go OS XI Muse. I would have called it that ^_^

I was hoping for something more like Puma or Cougar, to be honest.

Wait, you mean NOT updating computer equipment is BAD for sales? WOW!! I hope someone informs the folks at Apple. It seems that they are too busy focusing on the consumer portable division to even notice the Macs are not getting updated.

How are they not getting updated? They created the retina Macbooks what, last year. They just updated the Mac Pro and the iMac. All of them get updated cpus and internals when updates happen. How are they not updating these, please explain?

How many PC makers are currently shipping Haswell notebooks and desktops?

Was looking at a Gaming laptop to go along with my RMBP, and nearly all of them have Haswell updates.

Mac Pro is not for sale yet.

iMac have not been updated with Haswell architecture.

Only The Airs have been updated. Look at it how you like, only the Air range has been updated.

There are a lot of people where it was always driven by content. Used to be the only way you could consume content was the computer, now it's not required.

It's a trend that hit the Windows market a while ago. Here's an article from almost a year ago talking about how PC sales would be down for the first time ever in 2012

http://gigaom.com/2012/10/10/of-course-pc-sales-are-in-decline-mobile-is-where-its-at/

One certainly can't say the Windows side of the equation doesn't churn out model after model after model.

Apple's flat/declining sales have absolutely nothing to do with people waiting for refreshes. Most people buying MacBooks wouldn't know a Haswell from an oil well, wouldn't know a Sandy Bridge from a suspension bridge.

The "NEW" Mac Pro will be Apple's hottest selling product in a very short while. The brainwashing program is already in full-effect at movie theatres nationwide, and every 12 year old kid going back to school is begging to get one...

I had a PowerMac 9500 when I was 12, I know. I KNOW!

My brother had a PowerMac G3 (the beige kind that the monitor stands on top of) when he was 4, but that was years after it came out, and I think it was my dad's old Mac.

makes Sense

this makes sense to me a lot of families have one computer and many iPads/iPods/iPhons's to go with out the computer not sure the iOS device is ready for the challenge just yet. i find it limiting EX saving files, storage, transferring files etc i just cant do with out the desktop yet ;(

Very few people need the added power of a laptop or desktop, not to mention the expense.

The trend will continue... Post pc world.

Cook and Ive should run the company together. That's the closest combo I can imagine to get even close to Jobs. Otherwise... I'm not feeling good about things.

Disliked the "Jobs is gone" whoas but I will admit this now; Jobs was a great salesman and visionary whose penchant for the extreme pushed Apple to exhaustive yet impressive results. Cook is a great CEO but he's kowtowing too much to the media. Steve Jobs' personality was a key element to Apple's success; a mad genius that drew attention from the nerds to fashionistas. Was he the only reason? Certainly not, but a good portion of the equation.

I think we're all using our Macs/PCs less and less as our tablets and smartphones get used more and more. For that reason, we'll likely make do with the same ol' aging Mac/PC for considerably longer.

I wouldn't go that far. Some of us still rely on our Macs for work and need both the horsepower and screen real estate that's afforded by something larger than a phone, tablet or even an MBA.

That, and I would strongly argue that many people need software that just isn't really touch friendly. Who's going to develop a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation on a tablet? I get Excel spreadsheets all the time with thousands or tens of thousands of lines...think I'm going to use my iPad for that? Think a college student is going to write a serious paper, footnoted and all on a tablet?

I think laptops and desktops are here to stay for quite some time...again, for specific market segments but for many casual and at-home users, you're right the tablet and smart phone will replace the old desktop and maybe even the laptop.

Atypical customer

I can't imagine not having a Mac. If I was limited to one product it would be a quick decision. Love my iPod second to Mac.

Apple's computers are expensive...really expensive, compared to the rest of the market. Take Apple's 15" Retina MacBook Pro for instance, their flagship model...even a base configuration is over $2000. And looking at 15" PC/Windows laptops, most of those are around a $499 price point. Apple doesn't even sell a MacBook Air for under $800, and it's a netbook sized one at that. I will admit the 11" Air is a nice computer...but Apple's computers all demand a HUGE premium, and always have.

Apple doesn't sell computers at a premium. They just don't sell ones at the bottom end of the market.

Comparatively spec'd PCs are often either the same price or only marginally less. I'm not talking about one you can build yourself- that's an entirely different proposition.

Heck, I would of bought a MBPr a long time ago if I would of known it was going to be October timeframe (e.g. which is still a guess). Too late now, I'm well into waiting mode. They should of updated us during WWDC.

I know exactly what you mean; I'd have bought a 2010 Mac Pro if I'd known that we wouldn't see a major upgrade until late 2013!

I think price does matter

I know quite a few people suffering malware issues on Windows products. They must replace hard drives and are shut out of the computer for days. They all ask me why I use a Mac. Think it's too costly. They endure repair costs happily but consider the Mac excessive. These are often folks with adequate means. One in particular is a retired surgeon in early 70’s. wonder what he is saving for? His "kids" are middle age now.

Mindset, I guess

Given that the worldwide PC market nosedived 11% in Q2 2013 compared to a year ago quarter, a mere 5% decrease would result in an increase in market share for Apple.

There is just so much stupid on this thread.

No there won't. While the MacBook Air doesn't sell as well as the Pro, it still sells quite well. Haswell came out - no spike in sales. Not only not a huge one, but not a small one.

You do realize how little of the most recently reported quarter the new MacBookAir was available, don't you? I think it was about the last 2 weeks. So it wouldn't have had much measurable impact.

In my case it wasn't like that. I needed a high end 17" MBP, but since it wasn't available, I tried the 15" and after I got everything included, it was damn near $3000. Instead I got a Samsung Series 7 17" with the same specs for $1500 and compared to my 2009 MBP 17" it is running cooler, quieter and the battery life is way better.

Well, computers in general seem to be selling less than before, but Apple is certainly not making any effort to make the situation better. Let's see:

MBA: The specs are up-to-date, but the design and the screen date back from 2010.

cMBP: Not updated in over a year, and the vultures are already flying in circles around it, waiting for it to be discontinued.

rMBP: Expensive. Very expensive. And not updated in a long time.

iMac: Desktops are in a declining trend. And the iMac is expensive and doesn't get an update in a long time.

Mac Mini: Almost a year without an update.

Mac Pro: The last update (and a minor update) was over a year ago. Apple unveiled a brand new product two months ago, but no launch yet.

There are Windows laptops selling for a much lower price and with similar specifications. Apple still has the retina display on its Pro line of laptops, but other manufacturers are catching up (and some will surpass Apple soon). It's no wonder Macs are not selling well...

I'm not going to say your wrong, but I've been down this rabbit hole with people on message boards before. While the broad-based specs are the same, there are often a lot of little compromises- things like the kind of memory, bus speed, speed of the HD, screen resolution, etc...

Sometimes those compromises are ok, but I've generally found REAL side by sides are a lot closer than some make out.
