So Apple determines when you buy a computer, not you. A customer they love.
I don't understand what you mean. Is Apple the only computer company in the world? In case you didn't know, it's not against the law to own more than one computer at a time. You're even allowed to go to stores without the Apple logo above the door.

I have an M1 Max Studio and it gets the job done but I want to upgrade to the M5 when it comes out. I suspect that it will be a case of placing an order and waiting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 months to get it. I looked around at the M4 and it's as people say - you can't get them.

I've looked at building a PC and parts are available but the prices are crazy. It would also take several hours to do the build although I find it a fun task; just need to allocate the time. I can go either way. Right now I'm using an iMac Pro (cheap) and the M1 Max Studio and these work fairly well. I wish that I had more RAM on the Studio (48 would be enough) but I can split my applications between the two systems running stuff that doesn't require much CPU on the iMac Pro and stuff that needs more performance on the Studio.

It is nice to have hardware that is good enough at this time. It is completely possible that hardware gets even harder to buy later this year and into 2027. We're all being held hostage by the Iran war and the potential effects on the consumer electronics marketplace.

It might as well just be because they stopped producing them altogether and building up inventory for their replacements e.g. the M5 Max and M5 Ultra.

sure, if you need a new computer today go ahead

enjoy windows and/or linux

if you need new Mac asap sign up for refurb store alerts. that's how I got my m4 studio

I'd really like the M5. I know that I could just buy the laptop but it's kind of a poor way to build a desktop. I can wait for now; I just wish the shortages didn't exist.

a 2026 model car is likely to have the same engine as a 2025 model car

just like a potential m5 2026 Mac Studio would have the same SOC as a 2025 MacBook Pro

and since said Mac Studio doens't exist yet, there is no 2025 launch day price to compare to
Doesn't matter because of time dependent depreciation.

Bought the exact same config from refurb store recently

I’m probably good for 10 years
(In Re M4 etc) It is the right time for me to upgrade, and, there are good deals on M4 refurbs out there, but, I hate to not have the M5 because I would like the MIE/EMTE capability for the next (10? how about 5?) years.
