You can guesstimate how fast the M5 Ultra will be now that M5 Max is out, at least get a sense of it via some research and putting numbers together. It will be a significant jump from M3 Ultra > M5 Ultra.

M3 wasn't a big jump in general from M1/M2. But M5 will be.

so it makes no sense to compare the M4 Max to the M3 Ultra to estimate the difference between the M5 Max to the next Ultra chip. Knowing this, it only makes sense to compare the M3 Max to the M3 Ultra.
You are correct, but they are the current third generation Mac Studio Max and Ultra models that Apple sell (well used to…. 😬)

Some of us just don't need the screen, keyboard, trackpad, battery, etc. that comes with a laptop 😅

The Mac Studio makes perfect sense while obviously being cheaper and offering better thermals / noise ratio.
Yeah, I had to buy a MBP as I can’t just keep waiting for so long for the studio.
But in doing this, I’ve had to buy a dock with a 10gb Ethernet, an Apple keyboard and a trackpad while the laptops excellent 16” screen and keyboard sits there doing nothing folded away and will never be moved from my desk ☹️

I hope Apple does something more interesting with this "tile" stuff. Personally I don't need double up of everything for CPU, display engines, Thunderbolt, or media engines (etc).

It would be cool to see something like an 18-core CPU paired with 2 GPU "tiles" (64-core GPU and 80-core GPU) or 3 GPU "tiles" (96-core GPU and 120-core GPU) 😅

Apple could even salvage more GPU dies with other core counts.

Anyway, my wallet is ready for either M5 Max or M5 Ultra Mac Studio to drop ...

I’ve ordered a M3 Ultra 96gb as I need a new Mac and am worried about lead time and availability blowing out. I’m 8 to 9 weeks delivery and doubtful of seeing an M5 at WWDC but will cancel order if one appears.

Both M4 Max and M3 Ultra models are still available in my local Apple Store for collection today.
Did you check online for available stock in your local stores.

Yeah I did. Any custom order moves it to 8-9 weeks here in Oz. Only M4 base available in store here.

Is the 9 to 10 week wait time realistic? Are buyers actually receiving their Studio orders?

Kicking myself for not buying last year.

I ordered mine 2nd of May and still says Arrives 3rd of July - so date hasn't changed. Apple normally pretty good with that. Either shortages are very real or an M5 is here WWDC and there will be an 8 week wait on release.

The Mac Studio M4 Max is not even showing up at B&H Photo anymore and the M3 Ultra shows as Discontinued. At this point I feel pretty confident that the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studios are going to be announced at WWDC.
I hope you’re right but if you are, think it’s likely there’ll be a 6 month wait before I manage to get hold of one.

At least M5 Max variants (if announced now) should be fairly well available. The MBP M5 Max with 128gb of RAM for instance has a delivery estimate of 2 weeks where I live. Would think the same holds true if it is in Studio chassis.

As for M5 Ultra.. well, I’m sure everyone hopes for the best. Still doubt you’d have to wait longer than a few weeks though.

My guess is even if announced, still shipping in fall
If that's the case, that makes it a tougher sale for me. It's not critical that I get a new computer, and I don't know if I can accept a year old chip. I'd rather them skip the M5 Studio and release a M6 Studio in early 2027.

I'm cool with getting a M5 Max Studio now or in fall, or a M6 Max a little later, whatever comes first. But I have a M4 Pro Mini to trade in so would be happy for it to not lose too much trade in value between now and then.

What’s wrong with a year old chip ?

What if there is no m6 until fall 2027? Or early 2028?

There's nothing inherently wrong with a year old chip but your ROI is significantly reduced if they're selling a year old chip at the same price it was on launch day. No different than a car. A 2026 model introduced at the end of 2025 isn't as valuable at the end of 2026 so if you're still paying the premium "new" price a year later and the next model is imminent, you're paying a sucker's tax.

a 2026 model car is likely to have the same engine as a 2025 model car

just like a potential m5 2026 Mac Studio would have the same SOC as a 2025 MacBook Pro

and since said Mac Studio doens't exist yet, there is no 2025 launch day price to compare to

Then I wait. It’s not like it’s going to pay for itself thanks to the productivity gains (for me). There’s a few features that I would like, but they can wait. My last Mac was ten years old before I replaced it, and so is my iPad. If Apple doesn’t have what I want - when I want it - then I spend my money elsewhere. My rule is that I buy computers when they are released. There’s nothing I hate more than a new version coming out a week later, even if it’s an incremental update

So Apple determines when you buy a computer, not you. A customer they love.
