I have a 2015 13" RMbpro and have gotten hard locks a few times in last little bit that I haven't gotten under OS X ever (not even 10.0) From the old days of Mac OS/System I still set my clock to seconds for purposes of crashes and have noticed it quite a few times...

That's not the fault of the OS. I've lost a considerable amount of work before because of application or OS crashes but I don't blame the software, system, or hardware. I blame myself for not saving my work frequently enough (or turning on auto-save to a short interval).
To provide auto-save functionality, to turn it on by default and to pick a reasonable save interval is a system designers job to do.

It all went south for OS X when apple pulled the stupid stunt of giving is a new version of OS X each year. Annual updates of gimmicks leads to an unstable OS, and you cannot blame the devs as they have huge mounting tech debt, resulting in bugs because the markerting and greedy morons are trying to push sales cause people think they are getting a free OS each year. Stupidity all round.

Windows 10, just get more stable each year , as it's not introducing new "features" each year while, we get a new OS every 12 months which starts the bug cycle .

Best thing apple could do is go back to charging for OS X and do updates every 3 or so years.

Completely agree, since the introduction of the 12 month cycle for OS X, it`s just deteriorated year on year. I am certain that the vast majority prefer stability, over more pointless "bells & whistles" that add little or nothing to productivity.

Apple to me now is only about one thing sales & spin, if they want me to remain a customer Apple needs to deliver on the Mac both hardware & software come WWDC, nor will thin, light & pink cut it...

on March 25, four days after Apple released what is the third update to the Mac OS.

Actually it was the fourth update to the Mac OS.

Anyway, apple have a dilemma now.

On the one hand they should hurry up and release 10.11.5 to fix this problem.

On the other hand, the fifth point release should never be hurried because it is likely to be the last one for el capitan. It really needs to be the best version of el capitan. Years down the track if someone wants to redownload el capitan from the purchases tab in the mac app store this is the one they will get.

I recently redownloaded lion, mountain lion, mavericks, yosemite and el capitan 10.11.3 before 10.11.4 was released because their digital certificates were updated in February of this year with a new expiration date in 2023. With the exception of el capitan all the other ones came as a .5 release.

The resolution to this dilemma I suggested is to release a supplemental update for 10.11.4 instead. But that doesn't seem to be happening.

A large number of MacBook Pro owners running OS X El Capitan are reporting widespread system freezes since installing the 10.11.4 update to Apple's Mac OS.

Hundreds of MacRumors forum members have been posting to a dedicated thread to discuss the issue, which spans 20 pages at the time of writing. The problem appears to be concentrated on 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros (Early 2015) running 10.11.4. Users report that their system becomes totally unresponsive at seemingly random times, with no way to regain access to their Mac other than to force a hard reboot.

The issue was initially reported by MacRumors forum member Antonnn on March 25, four days after Apple released what is the third update to the Mac OS. In Antonnn's case, the freezes have been occurring "about once a week", first when browsing in Safari, but then also during the use of other Mac apps, including Adobe Photoshop and several third-party browsers. The freeze seems to affect not only the screen and mouse cursor but also the Mac's Force Touch trackpad, which completely loses feedback.

Many other users have since reported similar freezes after updating to 10.11.4, with some 15-inch MacBook Pro (Mid 2015) owners also experiencing issues. One potential cause has been identified from crash logs as a system framework or an Intel Graphics driver bug. The issue is also being reported after installing Safari Technology Preview Version 1 and OS X 10.11.5 Public Beta 1.

Apple Support is apparently aware of the issue but have so far offered no concrete solution. Meanwhile, some users have resorted to downgrading their system to 10.11.3 by restoring from a Time Machine backup or performing a clean install.

We'll update this post throughout the day as we learn more.

[doublepost=1463172783][/doublepost]My 27" retina iMac (work), 21" retina iMac (home) and 13" MacBook Air are all working fine. No crashes at all.

Thankfully not issues here on mid-2015 MacBook Pro yet ironically my 2013 Macbook Pro used to do this all the time. I even had the entire logic board replaced and it still did.

The 2015 next freezes, hasn't once yet, but the fans are too loud on. My average work style causes them to kick in at 50% to 100% quite often, resetting NVRAM has never help, quite annoying, makes working on the 12" Macbook more enjoyable.

The Macbook has no fans so all it can do is work slower, and slower, and slower,..... until the temps come back in line.

I am not seeing any issues. Is this because I do not use Safari (use Firefox 90% of the time, and chrome the remaining 10%)? My Photoshop usage is also low. Any other apps that freeze?

Apple's losing it. Maybe stop building campuses, working on cars, fiddling with the stupid watch, and just concentrate on the one thing that built Apple from the ground up: Stable Mac Hardware and Software.

And put someone with a hardware and software background in charge of the products. Not someone obsessed with looks.

It's symptomatic of Apple these days. Apple is also making money off dead apps on the App Store. You pay, download, then prepare for the funeral - just don't trust the Apple Store more. 'Trust' you can't buy or sell. It has to be earned. C'mon Apple - what the hell is going on?

Sadly for me might be too late. Really don't like glued and non upgradable computers. Loved my macs, I could upgrade to a point , this soldered and glued crap...it's lost the essence what made macs great, greed has taken over. Apple is actually pushing me away to build my own computers again, I think the new Mac mini was my turning point where I saw Apple cripple its own products out of greed...and the iMacs with mechanical drives, sure you can max out the memory and get ssd, but damn the price sky rockets .

It's disgusting a 2012 Mac mini out performs the 2016 machine .... Not that it matters , as the software has gone backwards cause a bean counter is doing everything to get products out the door instead of focusing on quality. Really taking the fans for granted as suckers that will buy no matter what .....soon he and his team will realise these suckers are made up for some really smart people and leave...as I said before Apple will become Sony, cease innovation and milk the product lines ....

That's exactly the case right now, there are less problems with Windows overall.

Says who? Based on what statistics?

But hey, i have a site here that can help you: https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/anecdotal
That's a coin that can used both ways, mostly against anyone who is on the opposite side of the argument that you are standing in.

But hey – I didn't say that OS X is more stable than Windows at this time, it can be that it's not. I just pointed out that making general conclusions based on personal (anecdotal) experiences is a logical fallacy and those experiences doesn't necessarily apply to everyone else.

So here's a link for you: https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/strawman ;)

On the anecdotal side of things – none of the three Macs I use (one at work and two at home) that's running OS X 10.11.4 is having any stability issues (Windows 10 has been stable too on one of the Macs that I have it on, but I'm just running that occasionally). Does this mean OS X 10.11.4 is running well for everyone? Obviously not.

I have actually been having the same issue on my 13" MacBook pro. It's good to know that the issue is more than likely software related instead of a hardware issue but it's still very frustrating non the less. Having to do a hard reboot can lead to hardware issues. Hopefully Apple released a fix for this very soon.

What model of MacBook Pro 13" do you have? If it doesn't have an Nvidia graphics card I think it's a waste of time (most MacBook Pro 13" models since some years back have Intel graphics).

I would try a ”safe start”: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
and then a ”normal” start (i.e. don't hold down any keys during startup). Seemed to have helped two users at work at least.

Says who? Based on what statistics?

Stats? Here is what you do, run latest build of Windows 10 and OS X on your machine for a couple of weeks.

It's what many of us are doing here. We don't need some stats of the Internet to conclude things have improved vastly on the Windows side and backwards in OS X .

I'm reading these comments about people experiencing these lock ups once a week...I had two today alone...

To add insult to injury, when I restart, half of the time there is no cursor on the login screen so I have to undock to login. Also, after every update, I get a black screen on my LG Thunderbolt monitor so I have to reboot with Thunderbolt unplugged, log in, and then I can plug it back in.

Oh yeah mine does this all the time also, just assumed it was poor programming yet again. My caps lock responds though, so what I do is close the lid and let it sit for like 3-5 mins and then usually it opens right back up.

At least Apple seems to be on this faster (and without the denial) than the 2011 MacBook Pro graphical problems.

This is perfectly normal, and is caused by a slight deviation from the normal 1:1 matter/anti-matter intermix ratio - don't panic, it'll soon be gone once the warp core has cooled down.

Haven't updated my MacBook Pro in weeks, I guess that's a good thing. Will wait until 10.11.5 is released.

I had freezes on my mid-2009 book and had to get a new one in the end because neither myself nor anyone else, including the apple shop, could help.
